Allight keeps things quiet

Located at ‘La Puebla de Alfinden’, justoutside Zaragoza - a thriving industrial areaclose to the rolling valley of the Rio Ebro, over the past 20 years Gesan has beentransformed from a small Spanish businessinto the international company it is today.

Gesan began in 1986 with very limitedmeans, a lot of hope and the premise that‘customer satisfaction would be thefoundation on which the business would bebuilt’.

The company’s meteoric rise in theinternational arena owes much to thededication and vision shown by Luis San Giland his team at Gesan.

Last year Gesan celebrated 20 years in theelectric power business. Perkins’ DaveRobinson and Chris Marrannino visited itsSpanish headquarters to present companyfounder Mr San Gil with a commemorativeplaque and glass bowl, while more than 150employees were presented with Gesan poloshirts commissioned by Perkins for thisspecial event.

Mr Robinson, sales manager PerkinsElectric Power, praised Mr San Gil for beinga ‘guiding light’ for Gesan, adding that hewas an ‘honest, sincere and trustworthybusinessman’ who, over the years hadbecome an important friend.

Recalling his thoughts after his first visit toGesan in 1998, Mr Robinson said he hadconcluded that it was a company which was

‘going places’, ably led by an honest andtrustworthy gentleman.

The current relationship goes back to thepurchase of the first six units in early 1998.

Account manager Mr Marrannino stated:“Gesan has continued to develop a clearproduct strategy. Year on year growth hashappened because of its solid foundations. The strong management team understandsthe market very well. The company has nowreached the ‘critical mass’ required tosustain the business even if the market doesgo down.

“Profitability is key to growing thebusiness at a sustainable level. 2006 has seenanother year of success with growth topping20 per cent. The fully equipped premises at‘La Puebla de Alfinden’ are virtuallyoutgrown and new purpose-built facilitieswill be built during 2007. The new premiseswill accommodate all the necessaryfunctions to further grow the business.

“The whole team, from the managementto the shop floor, has played a vital role inGesan’s success, with a commitment toproducing a quality product the key aspectof the business. Gesan looks to the futurewith the same hope and enthusiasm it had atthe very beginning.”

Dependable solution: Perkins powers the Gesangenerator.

In the early 1930s, two British engineers embarked on a businessjourney that would eventually see Perkins become one of the world’sleading providers of off-highway engine solutions. Now, as thecompany celebrates its 75th year, Powernews tells the Perkins story.

Man of vision: companyfounder Frank Perkins.

2007 is an important milestone for Perkins asthe company celebrates its 75th anniversary.

In 1932 an entrepreneurial British engineerand a shy but brilliant engine designer set upbusiness together in a tiny backstreetworkshop in the centre of Peterborough.

Frank Perkins and Charles Chapman weretwo men with little money but a big idea.Perkins was enterprising, imaginative and anaggressive salesman, while Chapman was anengineering genius who dodged the spotlight.

From humble beginnings the companycontinued to grow with Chapman able toconceive revolutionary engineering solutionsand Perkins able to exploit them withextraordinary vigour and market them to theworld.

The story of Perkins, which this yearcelebrates its 75th anniversary, is a classic taleof engineering triumph.

Today, through continuous product andprocess development, with support

from a sophisticated worldwidedistributor network, Perkins has

grown to become the leadingsupplier of diesel and gasengines in the 4-2000 kW (5-2600 hp) market.

Ranging from 5 to over 2,600hp, Perkins engines power morethan 5,000 different applicationsfrom over 1,000 major equipmentmanufacturers, and are purpose-built to suit individual needs.

Before Perkins and Chapman thediesel engine was a heavy, slowrevving workhorse, lacking dash andperformance. Chapman’s concept

was the high-speed diesel – a

motor that could challenge gasoline as theprimary motive power.

The world’s first high speed diesel enginewas Perkins’ four-cylinder Vixen, which madeits debut in 1932, and in October 1935Perkins became the first company to hold sixworld diesel speed records for a variety ofdistances, set at the Brooklands racetrack inSurrey.

In 1947 Perkins moved its production fromQueen Street to Eastfield in Peterborough, andby 1966 the company had won its first Queen’sAward.

Today Perkins is recognised as a worldleader in the design and manufacture ofindustrial diesel engines throughout the world.By designing, delivering and supportingmedium duty diesel engines and powersolutions, Perkins aims to be customers’ firstchoice to power their world.

Perkins first full year of production resultedin just 35 engines all destined for trucks andcars, a far cry from the 300,000 that areproduced each year today. More than 17million engines have entered into service in theoff highway market and continue to providePerkins customers with a high standard ofservice.

Operating in five main markets; Agriculture,Construction, Power Generation, Industrialand Materials Handling, Perkins providespower solutions whatever the requirement.

The history of Perkins is a story of invention, determination and consummate skill. Over thepast 75 years Perkins has continued to innovateand develop the diesel engine, paying homageto Frank Perkins’ drive and determination andthe sentiment of his original belief of “Wherethere is no vision, people perish”.

Life saving ventureTwo fire engines have been successfullydelivered to firefighters in Iraq andKurdistan thanks to a partnership betweenPerkins Engines Company, the Fire BrigadesUnion (FBU) and Cambridgeshire Fire andRescue Service.

As one of the fire engines, a 1987 DennisRS135 was powered by a Perkins dieselengine, Perkins decided to support theproject both financially and logistically.

A team of FBU officials undertook thehumanitarian trip, travelling nearly 5,000kilometres to hand over the vehicles toofficials of the General Federation of IraqiWorkers in Du Hok in Kurdistan. Fromthere 1987 Dennis RS135 was taken on toBaghdad in Iraq, while the other vehiclewas taken to Irbil in Kurdistan.

Adrian Clarke, regional official of theFBU for the East of England said: “In myexperience this was a unique partnershipled by a trade union and supported by botha public service and a private industrycompany to deliver humanitarian help toanother part of the world.”

As one of the vehicles was powered by aPerkins diesel engine the FBU contactedPerkins and requested its help. Along with afinancial donation Perkins supplied a basketof service parts for the engines. Thecompany also gave the team a list ofdistributors in every country which thevehicles would travel through andinstructed these distributors to support anyrequests for assistance.

The engines proved to be extremelyreliable with the only vehicle breakdownsbeing electrical faults.

Marion King, marketingcommunications manager at Perkins said:“We were delighted to be able tosupport such a worthwhile humanitarianproject.

“After meeting Adrian Clarke, whoexplained the background to the trip, weimmediately agreed it was somethingPerkins wanted to support. Oursponsorship committee decided to assistwith the cost of the trip but we alsowanted to help ensure the vehicles made itto their final destination.

“We spoke to our distributorsthroughout Europe and the Middle East andthey all agreed to provide assistance to the

team throughout their trip.“We were delighted to hear both

vehicles had been delivered safely and thatthe Perkins engine had performedextremely well throughout the journey.”

Mr Clarke said: “Both Perkins Enginesand Cambridgeshire Fire and RescueService should be congratulated on theirsupport of this life saving project and theyshould be proud that they employ peoplewho not only talk the talk on diversityissues but that they are also prepared towalk the walk with their individualactions.

“The fact is that these fire appliancesthat served the communities ofCambridgeshire are now carrying onwhat they were designed to do and arehelping to save lives once again.”

>>Perkins’ logo:

the marque of excellence

Today it is instantly recognisablearound the world but the Perkinslogo has an interesting history of itsown – having, like the company, continually evolved over the past 75 years.

In the early years the companyname was displayed simply and inblock capitals, but in 1938 the firstsymbol – a shield bearing a stylised‘P’ with a laurel wreath and the wordDIESEL – appeared.

Soon after a new symbol wasproposed. It is thought LaurieHancock, who was responsible forthe company’s publicity andadvertising, was its designer.

The new logo took the form of thefour circles and the diamond stillused today.

There have been variousexplanations as to the symbol’smeaning, but in 1982 Laurie Hancockwrote:

“I personally designed the present‘sign’ or ‘symbol’, denoting the fourmen and a boy (who formed theoriginal company), namely CharlesWallace Chapman, George DerekPerks, Francis Arthur Perkins andCaptain Alan Richardson. The boy inquestion was Edward Marvill.”

The symbol had a thin outline, with the stylised ‘P’ in the centre. Itwas used by itself and the companyname appeared in a heavy italic scriptfor some years.

The use of the simple symbol withthicker outline and always with the‘Perkins’ in set script and to set rulesand procedures came in the 1970s.

The Perkins logo now forms oneof the most long-lived, well-knownand respected identifications inengineering today.

Massey Ferguson has introducedsignificant new features to ten models inits mid range 90 – 150 hp MF 6400 andMF 7400 Series tractors.

All models are now powered by thelatest generation, common-rail and fourvalve per cylinder engines, completingMassey Ferguson’s introduction of Tier IIIengines to the complete 90 – 215 hp MF6400 and MF 7400 ranges.

Laurent Pernin, Massey Ferguson’sgeneral marketing manager, medium andhigh horsepower tractors, said: “These arevery advanced machines featuring the bestengines, transmissions and front linkage inthe industry and a comfortable cab offeringan incredibly low noise level. The machinesare functional and a joy to drive, offeringperformance and features that will makeany user proud to own one.”

All new models in the MF 6400 and MF7400 Series are equipped with the latestgeneration four- and six-cylinder Perkinsengines and new SisuDiesel four-cylinderunits in the 115 hp MF 6460 and 125hpMF 6470 models. All offer exceptionalairflow with four valves/cylinder withcommon rail fuel injection and electroniccontrol.

These new power units comply withthe latest Tier III emission regulations. Atthe same time Massey Fergusonengineers have taken the opportunity toalter engine characteristics to providemore power and torque, about 10hp ofextra power lower at lower enginespeeds and about a 20hp boost for PTOand transport work.

The flexibility of these powerful enginesensures all models have superb power-to-

weight ratios, ideal for modern businessesthat require a versatile machine capable ofcarrying out a wide range of jobs.

The engines are now encased under asleek, new bonnet. This practical designpivots at the rear and rises up fully. Onsix-cylinder models the air cleaner andnew cooling package now also foldforwards and upwards, offering plenty ofroom for cleaning and servicing these, aswell as the main radiator.

While the MF 7400 continues to offeroperating flexibility with its Dyna-VTcontinuously variable transmission, all newmodels in the MF 6400 Series are nowequipped with Dyna-6 Eco transmission. This design has very low driveline losses, which ensures maximum power andtorque delivery to the wheels and PTO,combined with good economy.

Advanced machiningMassey Ferguson has boosted ten models in its mid-power rangethrough a series of new features and state-of-the-art Perkins engines.

BRIEFING

Sales of Perkins’ Extended ServiceContracts (ESCs) – designed to givecustomers added peace of mind andprotection against unexpected repair costs– are really gathering momentum sincetheir launch just four months ago.

Existing and new owners of Perkinsengines can purchase ESCs through thePerkins Distribution Network.

An ESC covers the costs of defectivereplacement engine parts, repair timelabour and travel time.

It provides customers with long-termpeace of mind, protection againstunexpected repair costs and the globalsupport of authorised Perkins distributors.

ESCs cover Series – 400, 800, 900,1000, 1100, 1300, 2300, 2800 and now4000 engines. They are also available forIndustrial or Electric Power Generationapplications.

The first ESC was sold by UTCEngineering to its sister company UTCLeasing, which leases and rents outgenerator sets. The set was manufacturedby Ghaddar Machinery in Lagos andcontained an 1104 Series engine. Thegenerator, which is currently being leasedto First Bank, Lagos Nigeria, has an ESCfor four years, 3,500 hours.

Soon after the launch of the 4000 SeriesESC, UTC Nigeria and Perkins accountmanager Matt Rayson announced the saleof an ESC for a 4012 engine operating inNigeria.

There have been many other notablesuccesses with Canadian distributorPerkins Quebec Maritime (PQM) sellingfour 1104 ESCs to local genset OEMDetroit Diesel. The contracts will provide

the customer with five years peace ofmind and protection from the cost ofunexpected engine failure.

Steve Bloodworth, Perkins’ ESCproduct manager, said: “PQM made greatrevenue from this sale, but it is after theESC has been sold that the benefits forPerkins distributors really kick in. They willenjoy increased parts and service revenuefrom any claims, plus they will sell moremaintenance parts because customersmust buy genuine for the duration of thecontract.”

Meanwhile Spanish distributorModipesa has sold 25 ESCs to end usersrunning gensets manufactured by a varietyof OEMs, including Gesan, Himoinsa,Inmesol, Franvicar and Internaco.

Its sales were the first in Europe andprotected the smallest engines in Perkinsproduct range - the 400 Series.

Jacobo Alfaro, Modipesa productsupport, said: “Using our customer basewe have focused on three or four smallcustomers to launch this revolutionaryscheme. Smaller customers can give youquicker response. It is essential to have apool of examples to show big customershow this can work and give quotes fromend users.”

Germany’s BU Power Systems has alsojust successfully sold Perkins’ first ESC foran industrial application. The ESC willcover the 403 Series engine, which ispowering a Weidemann 1130CX - acompact construction application.

Xtreme Manufacturing, Las Vegas, Nevada, launched its new 12,000-pound capacity, 67-footlift height XRM-1267 telehandler in January2006, one of the first machines of its sizeavailable in North America.

It is powered by a Perkins 1104C-E44TAengine –- ideally sized for this very big and long-reaching machine.

Xtreme is a customer of Perkins MasterDistributor Southwest Products of Phoenix,Arizona.

With its outriggers in position and the rearaxle locked, the XRM-1267 can take a 6,800pound load to its 67-foot maximum vertical (lift)height and 3,000 pounds to its maximumhorizontal outreach of 53 feet, 8 inches.Weighing 46,300 pounds, the XRM-1267measures 26’6”x8’6”x8’11” when stowed.

This telehandler uses a heavy-duty rollerboom and dual hydraulic cylinders for improvedlift and control.

Powered by the 130-hp Perkins centre inlineengine, the XRM- 1267 features a three-speedpower shift transmission. The machine also hasfull-time planetary four-wheel drive, and four-wheel, two-wheel, and crab steering. Rear pivotsteering is available as an option.

Xtreme president Don Ahern said:“Telehandlers like the XRM-1267 are rapidlyreplacing straight-mast lift trucks in manyapplications because they offer equal or greaterlift, greater forward reach, and a superior abilityto traverse uneven ground.”

Standard equipment and functions –- allpowered by the Perkins engine – include directdual-control hydraulic valve actuation, rear axlestabilisation, a back-up alarm, and auxiliaryhydraulics. In the cab, adjustable controls and asuspension seat also come standard. With itscommon-fit Quick Attach system, various

Xtreme measuresattachments can be used on the XRM-1267,including the standard, 10° side tilt carriage, and45° swing carriage; pallet, lumber, and block forks;utility and concrete buckets; a 15-foot truss boom, and a wallboard/sheet material handler.

With Ahern’s commitment to quality, andXtreme’s growing reputation for value and ruggedreliability, it’s no surprise that the Xtreme linefeatures Perkins diesel power as standardequipment.

“There is always a market for quality,“ Ahernsays, “and we’re working hard every day to makesure Xtreme is the leader in that market. Solidmachines, best-in-class components, andcustomer-focused service are the things that gotus here, and we don’t intend to change any ofthem in the future.

“We had a lot of experience with Perkinsengines in our rental machines,“ said Ahern, whoalso owns Ahern Rental, a major western-U.S.equipment rental company. “And we are wellsatisfied with their quality and performance, aswell as their reliability under the rugged conditionsencountered by rental equipment.

“Let’s be honest, folks who rent equipmenttend to work it hard and not pay much attentionto things like maintenance. Perkins enginesdelivers under those rugged circumstances yearafter year, and that’s one of the reasons you’ll findthem on Xtreme machines today.

“Almost as important, though,“ he says, “is thesupport we get from our Perkins MasterDistributor, Southwest Products. Tom Haney andthe support staff of Southwest Products have beenkey players in helping us develop our productlines.

“And, of course, we know we can depend onthe Perkins service network to be there when weneed them wherever our telehandlers and forkliftsmay be used.”

Matelec, the biennial exhibition for powergeneration, lighting and small constructionequipment took place at the Fiera de Madrid, last year. One of the best shows in Europe forthe Power Generation industry, virtually allPerkins’ Spanish OEM’s were in attendance.

Perkins engines were packaged in 19 of the 65gensets on show. This equated to a Perkinspresence on nine of the 21 stands including FGWilson, Atlas Copco, Gesan and Himoinsa.

In 2006 the power generation industryprovided Perkins with around 13,000 enginesales in Spain, up from 5,000 in 2004.

A thriving partnership betweenMotori Perkins SpA and earth movingmachine manufacturer Venieri, which haslasted for 50 years, was celebrated inNovember.

Venieri, one of the first Perkinscustomers in Italy, was established in1947, when the company’s founderFerdinando Venieri, his brother and ahandful of employees started to buildagricultural tractors. Venieri later becamea key name in construction equipment inItaly, synonymous with earth movingmachines.

Since the first diesel engine, a PerkinsP3, was supplied to Venieri in 1956, thetwo companies have established a closeworking relationship.

In 1985 Venieri helped Motori PerkinsSpA celebrate the production of its tenmillionth engine, and recently the twocompanies have worked through theemission level legislations up to thecurrent Tier 3 with the Perkins 6cylinder engine 1106D, which featuresACERT technology.

Based in Lugo, the company produceswheeled loaders and rigid and/orarticulated backhoe loaders, and is todayowned and managed by Giacoma Venieri, nephew of the founder.

Perkins is the sole engine supplier forVenieri’s equipment, with the companytaking several hundreds engines per year. These engines include the 404C-22, the

804C-33T and the 1100 series.Speaking about the importance of the

long-standing partnership with Venieri,Lorenzo Lampugnani, account managerat Motori Perkins SpA, said: “There isgreat cooperation between us on themachine development – thanks to our

application engineering, to the pre-service, and once the machines are in thefield they can rely on our servicenetwork.”

He continued: “Over the past 50 yearswe’ve built a strong partnership andwe’re looking forward to working withVenieri for another 50 years.”

Perkins’ presence in Canada ismanaged by three Master Distributors, one in the west, one in the central, onein the east.

This may not seem a startling fact, butCanada is the world’s second largestcountry, smaller than Russia and a littlebit larger than the U.S. and China.

Thus, says Kris Neal, Perkins regionalmanager who is based in Toronto, eachof these three Master Distributors coverhuge amounts of Canadian territory. Andthey cover widely disparate markets, some of them quite specific to Canada(forestry, oil fields, fishing and more).

The Master Distributors are DiPerkCanada, based in Vancouver, Province ofBritish Columbia; Diesel Distribution, based in suburban Toronto, Province ofOntario; and Perkins QM (Quebec-Maritimes), based in suburban Montreal,Province of Quebec.

Neal says that it’s important to notethat all three of these Perkins MasterDistributors are relatively new, havingbeen formed through buyouts of theprevious Master Distributors in the pastfew years.

While there is a great deal of diversityamong them, one thing that PerkinsMaster Distributors have in common isthat business today is good and lookingup.

“High prices for oil and gas have setoff a black-gold rush in the westernprovinces served by DiPerk Canada.

Population growth, strong agricultureand construction markets, and a growingmining industry are fuelling businessopportunities in the area served byDiesel Distribution. And Montreal, too, ishaving its own renaissance,” Neal says,“the city is rebuilding highways, expanding its airport and constructingtwo major hospitals.”

Forestry (and thus for Perkins, forestryequipment) is a market that extends allacross the nation of Canada. Canada isthe largest exporter of forestry products, accounting for about 20 percent of theworld’s total.

The most compelling story, however,is oil. Extracting oil from tar sands inNortheast Alberta Province – in thegeneral environs of Edmonton – is anexpensive process, but high prices havemade the investment worthwhile.

A growing number of Perkins enginesare finding their way to the oil fields insuch equipment as generator sets, liftequipment, heaters, light towers, smallconstruction vehicles and the like. Thismovement of equipment north, to the oilfields, is also generating service andsupport business there.

The oil boom of course has alsobrought oil field workers to the area, resulting in a need for more houses, allcontributing to new businessopportunities for DiPerk Canada.

While the oil boom is having a positiveimpact on business, so is another event:

Geographical and cultural differences impact enginemarkets in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, so operatingin the world’s second largest country presents somediverse challenges for off-highway manufacturers andsuppliers alike. Here, Powernews highlights some of thekey issues and opportunities in a vital marketplace.

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games to behosted by Vancouver.

“The Olympics will help our business,”says DiPerk Canada marketing managerIan Laidlaw. “There are countless newconstruction projects going on now; newstadiums, new roads, new housing. All ofthis work requires power, and Perkins isbenefiting from it.

“The equipment rental market in theVancouver area is flying high now,”Laidlaw says. “Vancouver has alwaysbeen a destination city because of ourscenery and location on the PacificOcean and also very near the RockyMountains. But because of the Olympics,Vancouver’s profile is raised even more. We’re benefiting from that.”

While the area served by DieselDistribution doesn’t have quite the oildeposits or a Winter Olympics to boostits economy, there are plans to revitalisethe city’s waterfront and repair 300bridges in southern Ontario over thenext five years.

Diesel Distribution business unitmanager Kevin Stratton says that Ontarioprobably has the broadest economic basein Canada.

“The real drivers of our business forDiesel Distribution are the boomingmining industry, the strong constructionand agricultural industries and the factthat our OEM customers are lookingmore globally, beyond North America, tosell their products.”

Diesel Distribution’s service areaextends north all the way to the ArcticCircle (as does DiPerk Canada’s).

“Our business is concentrated in themore heavily populated areas of Ontariothat are just north of the U.S. border,”Stratton says. “But we do have significantbusiness in Manitoba – in particularagricultural equipment manufacturers –and in pockets of the north countrywhere there is significant forestryactivity.”

Forestry is also a very significantmarket in the northern parts of theProvince of Quebec, as is thecommercial fishing industry in theMaritime Provinces, New Brunswick,Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The snow grooming machine market incentral Quebec is also important.

“Canada is diverse – our people, ourmarkets. We have two official languages,English and French,” says Perkins QMindustrial manager Danny Savard. “But,because the country’s French populationis centred here, most of our business isconducted in the French language.

Canada is often referred to as“Canada, two nations, one country,” aterm that has sparked a significantamount of controversy. Canada’s totalpopulation is 32.8 million, of which7,000,000 are French-speakingQuebecois. Montreal has a Frenchflavour and the architecture and lifestyleis more similar to a European city than a

North American one. Most street andbusiness signs in Montreal and Quebecare in French.

“Every piece of marketing, every letteror name on our trucks has to have bothlanguages,” Savard says. “But we arehappy to do it because we believe it isvital for us to maintain our identity andour own sense of purpose.”

Perkins’ potential for growth inCanada is excellent, because Canada, theplanet’s second largest country, is thrivingwith a stronger currency, a strongereconomy, and is coping well with thedemands of diversity.
