Dear Friends of New Neighborhoods,Last year provided New Neighborhoods with new opportunities. Right from the start change was in the air as longtime CEO Ross Burkhardt retired early in the year. The Board of Directors actively engaged in a search for our new CEO, a leader that will continue New Neighborhood’s legacy of being at the forefront of creating sustainable communities while blazing a new exciting trail.

The CEO search took up much of 2017 while we utilized professional consultants and embarked on a national search. We understood that it would take time to make the right decision. We thoroughly evaluated what New Neighborhoods needed to successfully move it forward. The ideal candidate needed to be a

professional who fits our culture, possesses exceptional business acumen, and equally prioritizes and values our tenant constituent needs. We were looking for someone who would successfully collaborate with our board, community, local leaders, funders and investors and be a great role model and leader to valuable staff.

We are very pleased to introduce Jamey Healy as New Neighborhood’s new CEO. Jamey brings tremendous aptitudes, including solid experience in affordable and senior housing development and management and a background in dedicated public service. We are very excited about the future of New Neighborhoods under Jamey’s capable leadership. Welcome, Jamey!

Rhonda M. LeoneChair of the Board of Directors

Message from the President & CEOGreetings,

It was with great excitement that I accepted the opportunity of President and CEO of New Neighborhoods. I’m humbled to be offered this job at such a momentous time, the 50th anniversary of the organization. I can’t help but appreciate the agency’s great history of providing housing to those in need of shelter in a part of the country where finding and developing affordable housing is such a challenge. My hat’s off to those leaders who came before me and had the vision and the fortitude to keep it going through the decades.

I honor our past and I understand that I’ve been brought on to assess the new challenges, paradigms, and approaches needed to provide housing opportunities for our working-class community and folks who need help putting a roof over their heads. We, at New Neighborhoods, will continue to fulfill our mission by meeting the needs of a new era. We are at a turning point and New Neighborhoods is moving into our next phase. My job will include collaboratively creating new agency direction, improving operations, finding building opportunities, and serving our tenants in ways that are relevant to them.

As a New York University graduate who has lived here in the region, I understand the culture. As a former member of the Ohio State Legislature working on the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Committees, and as a Mayor of a major city, responsible for creating hundreds of affordable housing units, I know what it takes to create inventory. Also, having just arrived from a national organization providing affordable housing to senior citizens, I am acutely aware of the demand, as well as what it takes financially to successfully run an agency dedicated to providing affordable housing.

Thank you for your trust in me and our capable staff. We have dedicated this next year toward creating an operation and a direction for providing affordable housing that is sustainable and an environment that is empowering for our residents.

William J. Healy IINew Neighborhoods, President and CEO

2017 HighlightsWith a change in leadership and the rebranding of our annual fundraiser, 2017 truly can be classified as having been a transitional year here at New Neighborhoods. As we look back on last year we found award-winning advancements in 2017 that will impact our organization for years to come. In a world that is ever changing and surrounded by innovations, we saw fit to adopt those advancements that benefitted our organization and the communities we serve.

In partnership with GRID Alternatives, America’s largest nonprofit solar installer and funding from Connecticut Green Bank we created greener neighborhoods. The solar panel installation at 80 Fair Street in Norwalk, our 57-unit multi-family apartment building, was among the first of its kind in the state. This project will provide over $360,000 in lifetime energy cost savings and educate residents on how to be energy efficient.

We are also proud to announce that our MLK Energy Project was a recipient of the Stamford 2030 District Change Maker Award. The primary goals of the Energy Project at our Martin Luther King Jr. Apartments were reduction of energy usage, achievement of equipment redundancy, and system resilience. The 2030 panel was especially impressed with the scale of the project.

Our annual fundraiser, The Stamford Brew and Whiskey Festival, formerly known as Jazz on the Rocks, was one of our biggest successes of 2017. The rebranding of our annual fundraiser allowed us to reach new people in Southern Connecticut and the New York state area. The Festival which featured great food and spirits raised more than $35K that benefitted senior housing efforts in the Fairfield Country region.

Going above and beyond is something we pride ourselves in. Our Tenant Advocates continue to provide residents and community members with needed services. In 2017 alone, our Tenant Advocates provided residents, staff and other nonprofit organization with 369 turkeys, 100 chickens, 80 coats and winter accessories. Residents received access to fresh produce throughout the year, they also received free books, healthy recipes, and medical screenings to ensure that both their minds and bodies are healthy.
