MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSThis has a been a remarkable year for United Way of Southern Chautauqua County. The 2016 Campaign exceeded its $1.3 million goal by more than $35,000! These results are only possible because this community is filled with generous individuals, companies and private foundations. Anne and Paul Hedin can’t be thanked enough for generating the highest campaign total in six years.
Another ground-breaking achievement was being selected to lead the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative for the City of Jamestown. This special project seeks to invest $1 million in transformational programming for local residents struggling to make ends meet. This is a great example of how United Way can leverage its experience in community investment by overseeing a grassroots process that strives for measurable short-term results.
This Fall, our Board of Directors will establish a new three-year strategic plan. The focus on demonstrating impact for donors will continue as we address our four priorities. This work has never been more critical and we are eager to see where it takes us next.
Increase the
number of families with the necessary
life skills to be self-sufficient.
Increase the readyworkforce by
addressing soft & hard skills gaps among young
people & adults.
Improve academicsuccess by
working directly with youth fromcradle to career.
Improve the health &
independence of vulnerable
populations.
OUR STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
2016 CAMPAIGN SUCCESSUnder the leadership of Anne & Paul Hedin, Campaign Co-Chairs, the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County raised in excess of $1,338,652 for the community. This was a $37,000 increase over the prior year and 3% increase over the goal. More than 2,729 donors were inspired to give thanks to the work of volunteers in workplaces and in the community.

COMMUNITY BABY SHOWEROver 900 items and $1,000 cash were collected this year by individuals from Clymer Central School, Jamestown Area Medical Associates – GLPP, Lane Women’s Health, Moon Brook Country Club Women’s Association, Panama Central School, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and Zonta Club of Jamestown.
VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE
2-1-1 CALL CENTER
For the 2016 tax year, 14 volunteers prepared and filed 687 returns. This generated a total of $870,000 in refunds returned to the working families of our community.
The 2-1-1WNY Call Center provides information and referrals for a variety of health and human service needs. In 2016-17, there were 1,556 calls from Chautauqua County. Nearly three quarters of those calls were inquiries about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
This year, 2-1-1WNY established a Memorandum of Understanding with Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services to provide support in the event of a community incident such as flooding or a health crisis. This formalized a relationship that dates back to 2007.

WOMEN2WOMEN
WOMEN&FINANCE
This adult mentoring program uses one-on-one relationships to help women achieve their personal goals. It brings together women from various careers and backgrounds who want to work with others to make their dreams become possible. Eight women are currently volunteering as “coaches.” They meet and communicate regularly with “participants” to build a relationship that enhances both.
Much like the Game of Life board game, women face twists and turns along their path. This initiative seeks to help women manage their personal finances no matte what occurs. Workshops held this year taught women more about maintaining the right records and files, understanding their credit score, acquiring the right auto and home insurance and planning for retirement. Local women taught one another in a fun and low pressure setting.
COALITION OF CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY WOMEN & GIRLSThe Coalition of Chautauqua County Women & Girls seeks to provide opportunities for women and girls of all ages and backgrounds to thrive. Now in its fourth year, this collective shares resources and offers a forum for advancing important work.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITYMEET YOUR MATCH VOLUNTEER EVENTUnited Way co-hosted an event with the Jamestown Young Professionals during Giving Tuesday. The goal of the event was to match a younger demographic with local volunteer opportunities. Each agency had one minute to pitch to the potential volunteer. The event raised awareness about the critical need for volunteers in the community. Many matches were made and several agencies have new volunteers; 3 have even decided to serve on Boards.
Each year, United Way partners with organized labor to recognize the community service of one of its members. Shawn Tibbitts and Kyle Sholl, members of IAFF 1772, were selected for the 2016 Mason Award. They launched the Chautauqua Project to raise money for families battling childhood cancer, specifically to help offset travel expenses or incidentals not covered by insurance.
They each maintain other community activities that help individuals and organizations like Court Appointed Special Advocates’ Come to the Table and Axemen Professional Firefighters Motorcycle Club’s Fill the Bus. Each participates in the well-known spaghetti dinners hosted by the firefighters to benefit local organizations.
JOSEPH H. MASON AWARD
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAREach year during Volunteer Appreciation Week, United Way helps its partner agenciescelebrate their volunteers by hosting a recognition event. Volunteers play a vital role in delivering services across the community. From riding on the bus for Chautauqua AdultDay Care to working in the food pantry at the Salvation Army to coaching sports at the WCD Boys & Girls Club. These individuals give thousands of hours in service to others.
EMPIRE STATE POVERTY REDUCTION INITIATIVEIn September 2016, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County (UWSCC) was selected as the lead agency for the City of Jamestown’s Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative (ESPRI). In this role, UWSCC worked with Mayor Teresi to convene a Taskforce of key stakeholders from the community. Together they began examining the demographics to understand ‘who’ was living in poverty and embarked on a journey to understand ‘why.’
In the course of seven months, the Taskforce has gained a greater understanding of the needs in the City of Jamestown. Nearly 300 individuals attended a community conversation, small group listening session, large group service mapping exercise or community improvement workshop.
Along the way, a group of individuals with ‘lived experience’ has started meeting to offer ideas and feedback to the Taskforce. The ESPRI Taskforce will release a Request for Proposals later this summer. The RFP will ask local non-profits to propose transformational projects to address the root causes of poverty.
To prepare for the application process, United Way engaged Kate Ebersole to conduct Community Improvement Workshops. These sessions engaged nineteen agencies from the Jamestown area to examine the issues and design programs using the Aim and Driver model. These workshops have already increased collaboration and communication among prospective partners, in addition to generating new ideas.
