Building a $20k house
The HistoryA design studio in Alabama set out on a mission:
To create a building that people below the poverty line could afford.
Why?$62 billion of damage were done by hurricane Sandy alone. People needed affordable housing.
Social Justice ArchitectureThe project follows in a tradition of building for the good of humanity. Some other similar projects have been the paper tube projects, that have built temporary structures for areas affected by natural disasters.
A paper church. A paper elementary school.
How much does the house cost?$20,000 USD is the cost of the entire project, including labour.
This works out to:
- $12,000 USD in materials.
- $8,000 in labour costs.
Part of the aim was to create work in local areas.
What if you build it yourself?
Rural Studio intends to make the plans available to the public, which means you could choose to build the house yourself.
That would save labour costs and end up costing you only $12,000 USD.
What else did they learn?
$20,000 houses don’t stay cheap for longAfter they erected the houses, they were going up in value, sometimes doubling in a year. This was a problem for making housing accessible to the community.
Good design is a necessity. Everyone deserves to live in a house they like. The design was as much about looking good as it was about minimising space wastage.
There are more challenges than just getting it built.Overcoming council rejections was difficult because the building were uniquely made. The layout and structure were difficult to classify, so Rural Studio released a manual on how to work with your council.
