The origins of the Gitto Group date back to 1957 when, as a small

private Enterprise founded by Carmelo Gitto, a new wave of op-

portunity brought investment and expansion to the construction in-

dustry. Throughout 1960 to 1980 the Company completed several

important projects of architectonic prestige and earned recognition

and a place amongst the most reputable companies in Italy.

From 1990 to date, through the guidance of the Gitto Brothers,

Salvatore and Domenico, the Group has handled large infrastruc-

ture development projects in both Italy and abroad. One of the

most important was the realization of the Messina-Palermo Hi-

ghway in Sicily; an impressive stretch of motorway with viaducts

and state-of-the-art tunnels.

It was while the projects in Italy were on-going that Engr.

Domenico Gitto, a natural leader and charismatic businessman,

started turning his attention to new opportunities abroad. The first

large contract came quickly with Israel and Jordan and in 2002

following that initial breakthrough, the Company was awarded a

succession of important contracts in West Africa and in particular

Nigeria. With the business in expansion the Company was ear-

marked to quickly become an important international Group and

today it is proudly one of the cornerstone companies contributing

to the advancement of Nigeria’s infrastructure and development.

Special appreciation must be given to Domenico Gitto for the le-

gacy that he left behind following his tragic and premature death

in 2012. He was only 52 years old. A man of principle with great

vision and courage, he will always be proudly remembered as ha-

ving led the Gitto Group into this era and to making it into one of

Nigeria’s most important Contractors.

The Gitto Group is now led by Salvatore Gitto.

For 50 years the Gitto Group has played a major role in the con-

struction industry in Italy and over the last 20 years also interna-

tionally. The diverse and broad range of executed works and the

Group’s technical and administrative skills consolidated over the

years in every area of civil engineering assure that each project is

carried out successfully from the planning stage to final implemen-

tation. With an extensive pool of experience and professionalism

the Group and its partners and subsidiaries confidently satisfy the

highest standards and meet the most stringent demands of today’s

complex and competitive markets.

The Gitto Group is a reliable, multifaceted organization that con-

sistently delivers quality and value for money to both the Italian

and International markets for even the most complex assignments.

Thanks to a business plan founded on consistency and adaptation,

the synergy between traditional experience and technical inno-

vation has permitted the Group to grow steadily over time and

to perform successfully. Each project is a demonstration of the

professionalism that is synonymous with the Company name and

ensures it can continue to look towards the future with optimism.

Today the Group covers every aspect of engineering from civil,

hydraulics, transport, electrical, environmental, regional land de-

velopment to infrastructures, including roads and motorways, ai-

rports, bridges, viaducts and tunnels, civil and industrial building

complexes.

Roads and Transports

One of the Group’s principal areas of operation is the transporta-

tion sector which also accounts for the majority of its turnover. The

most important contracts carried out in this field are the primary

road networks in West Africa, the major motorway networks in

Italy and the Messina-Palermo motorway in Sicily. The planning

and building of large infrastructure projects in particular within

the Nigerian road sector, places the Group and its achievements

amongst the industry’s leading companies. Air and sea transport

have also developed considerably in recent years and the Group

can be proud of its substantial contribution with its iconic works

for the new International Airport in Akwa Ibom State and equally

important Itigidi bridge and road project. Both realized to promote

and accommodate the movement of commercial goods and facilitate

inter-community connections to and from their respective areas.

Civil and Industrial Engineering

Civil and industrial construction has also played a large part in

the more recent operations of the Gitto Group. It is important to

highlight the Group’s continued interest in property and urban de-

velopments in which its own technical staff work hand-in-hand

with the client’s engineers. The construction and restoration of the

Ecumenical Church in the Federal Capital of Abuja is a site of par-

ticular social and spiritual, as well as technical, significance; the

work consisted in the use of extremely advanced technical proce-

dures and skills. Other important projects include the realization of

Uyo’s 20th Anniversary Hospital and the new branch of the Cen-

tral Bank of Nigeria and the Tower Hotel & Conference Centre in

the States of Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa respectively.
