STEMSaturday

October 269 am - 3 pm

UWMC Science Labs

Science IDOLS (Individuals Discovering Opportunities for Leadership and Success) is a full-day workshop designed for middle school boys that introduces them to a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) careers. The goal is to help kick-start their career interests and coursework selections and provide hands-on experiences while learning about a variety of exciting careers.

The students will choose from a variety of 60-minute career sessions taught by local professionals who explain how they put their knowledge of STEM subjects to use in the real world. “Learning to Fly” theme will include sessions that highlight astronomy, physics, buildinginstrumentsofflightandflightnavigation.

What challenges and rewards do young people face as they

move from childhood to adulthood and undertake commitments to

higher education? Students of UWMC Theatre Professor Sarah

Rudolph will showcase answers to these questions through one-act

improvisational performances, based on the theme “Flight:

Leaving the Nest,” to be held over the lunch hour in the

UWMC Student Union. These sneak previews of the students’ discoveries, their“fallflightsof

fancy,” will evolve into completed scenes to be presented in the

UWMCBlackboxTheaterinthespring. Watch for more details for the February 2014 presentations.

Experiments in Space9 am–4 pm, Near the Spirit of Education (Dream Flight USA) Shuttle (South Hall Room 191 in case of rain)University students of UWMC science faculty members Scott Sargent, Kris Prahl and Penny Workman will display

aboard the Spirit of Education as the shuttle expands its mission to teach middle schoolers about space. Nick Ryan of Dream Flight USA has been working with the campus to develop a curriculum that offers opportunities for youth beyond the traditional Dream Flight USA target of 4th, 5th and 6th graders. What better way to meet that goal than to have college scientists originate exciting, hands-on discoveries for teens? Stop by the Spirit’s berth by UWMC’s front entrance (7th Avenue) to see what UWMC’s scientists-in-the-making have come up with, and try your own hand at their innovative explorations.

Something’s buzzing about the

Honeybee Keepers Assoc.Bruce Paquette9 am–4 pm, ConcourseThose busy bees aren’t just “in clover”--- they’re in a host of fragrant flora, ranging up to two miles over stands of buckwheat, basswood and milkweed to bring back their sweet treats for all to enjoy.

At his booth in the South Hall Concourse, Marathon County Honeybee Keepers Association President Bruce Paquette will explain the “how to” of beekeeping – from the proper equipment for getting started to the stories that abound about what those fascinating little critters can teach humans about nature and the “nature” of bee/human relationships.

Sled Kites9 am and 10 am, FieldhouseMaterials Fee: $4/participant per workshopRelatively unknown outside of the world of ardent kite flyers, the Sled Kite is simple to build and to fly. In 1950, William Allison of Dayton patented the first model as a ‘polymorphic’ kite, meaning it could take on many different shapes according to the wind. Made from almost any kind of material - trash bags, Tyvek™, newspaper, wrapping paper, anything relatively light and strong - there are almost as many different types of Sled Kites as there are people who make them. Learn how to make and move them in these morning and afternoon kite construction workshops with Wausau art teacher Ryan Priebe.

LEARNING TO FLYFESTIVAL

Learn about constellations. Design your own Space Station. Construct a menu for in-flight nutrition and use spectrometry to investigate interstellar gases. All these experiential activities are offered on board the Spirit of

Education “shuttle” and presented as a rich curricular array of experiments created for students. Dream Flight USA

will station the shuttle on campus throughout the day of the Learning to Fly Festival. Families and children are welcome to take a tour. Experiment tables will be set up

surrounding the shuttle for everyone to get “hands-on” with exciting educational offerings.

Sharon Ryan, a 5th grade teacher and recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, created the Dream Flight USA Foundation in 2003. Since that

time, the Spirit of Education mobile teaching lab, under the guidance of Nick Ryan, has traveled to schools throughout the Midwest to engage students in hands-on learning about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and inspire them in all aspects of space exploration.

Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center1 pm, UWMC AuditoriumThe Center is an educational resource built to honor and preserve the legacy of America’s leading WWII flying ace and to celebrate the contributions of all veterans who have defended our freedoms. Dick Bong, who hailed from Poplar, Wis., piloted a P-38 Lightning through more than 200 missions over the Southwest Pacific in World War II and destroyed 40 enemy planes – the most by any United States pilot before or since. Bob Fuhrman, education director for the Center, will present a free program on Richard Bong’s childhood, early civilian piloting efforts, U.S. Army Air Corps training, and the subsequent combat tours that earned him the Medal of Honor and bested Eddie Rickenbacker’s WWI record. He also will discuss the efforts to establish the museum in Bong’s honor.

REGI —Raptor Education Group11 am, UWMC AuditoriumEducation, rehabilitation, research: the Raptor Education Group Institute has a crucial mission in the Wisconsin northwoods and beyond, ensuring that our magnificent feathered friends remain a vital part of the ecosystem. Located in Antigo, Wis., REGI boasts one of the largest flight training facilities in the northwoods, used to teach eagles and other birds to fly and to build social skills necessary for a return to the wild. Center Wildlife Educator Abbey Ruppert will present Winged Wonders, which tells the stories of raptors and allows the audience to come face-to-face with falcons, hawks and owls.

Abbey Ruppert is a graduate of UW-Stevens Point with a degree in Biology and a minor in Captive Wildlife. Ruppert gained experience as an educator at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minn. and the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, Minn.before joining the REGI team in October.
