At Beard we are committed to our values of being friendly, efficient and committed; making us a great
place to work and a great company to do business with.
Our focus on treating everyone fairly extends to our supply chain and our customers as well as our employees.
Whether your project is a small refurbishment or a large, complex project we are committed to providing excellent service and support and delivering our customer’s vision.
Our ability to deliver excellence in the built environment has lead to us working on prestigious builds such as the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford, as well as being involved with the award-winning Bishop Edward King Chapel at Cuddesdon and the Nazrin Shah Centre at Worcester College. Along the way we have not just built buildings, but relationships; leading to a significant level of repeat business.
We hope you enjoy looking through the selection of projects featured in this brochure. For more details on these, and many other projects we have completed, please visit our website or contact your local office.

Buildings are spaces for living,
for working, playing, performing
and connecting. Buildings are
emotional because only people
can make them relevant, make
them useful, make them special.
A building fulfils its purpose through
the people who use it, inhabit it and
care about it. People breathe life
into buildings. They are at the
heart of everything we do.N A Z R I N S H A H ,

Our success can be measured by the relationships we forge; with our clients, our partners and with each other. Like any effective construction project, we start with a shared vision, shaping and moulding ideas, putting talented, determined people together to achieve results. Our business has always been this way – strong partnerships, nurtured and respected, at the very core of our brand, at the very heart of our business. Partners in construction. Trusted friends in success.
We believe in working in partnership with our supply chain, our customers and our wider building partners to make every building experience the best it can be.
Established in 1892 Beard build, design and build, restore and refurbish buildings throughout the South of England. Projects range in size from smaller projects to more complex projects up to £20 million. We also provide maintenance services on a number of smaller schemes.

Beard have a significant portfolio of work within the University & Higher Education sector, from historic Oxford colleges to community colleges. Our expertise is in delivering complex, high quality projects, many of which are in the public eye. Our skilled teams provide a comprehensive portfolio of award-winning services, from alterations and maintenance, through to renovation, conservation and new build, blending new with old. We have a proven track record in delivering high quality buildings for the arts, IT, and scientific research facilities as well as student accommodation, sports centres and lecture theatres.
Part of the reason for choosing Beard,
apart from the obvious of quality, cost
and programme, was their ability to
communicate a sense of personal
warmth – these were real human
beings – and a commitment to building
a strong relationship. This wasn’t just
about undertaking a job and making a
profit, it was also about leaving behind
a positive experience for both sides.

Our experience of working with private schools means we understand the challenges faced by our customers; working to tight timescales and in live environments is common.
Employing thorough planning and careful phasing of work to fit with academic timetables, we minimise inconvenience and allow for the continuity of essential services whilst work progresses.

Throughout our project the Beard team were helpful, considerate
and professional. We are delighted with the quality of the work and
the manner in which Beard liaised with professional consultants.

We were delighted with the quality of their work and by the
very positive and effective communication which existed
between the key players involved. Indeed, the willingness
of the Beard management team to go that little bit further
to ensure that issues were quickly resolved played an
important part in the success of the project.

Beard has a long and successful history of working with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Armed Forces and their partner organisations.
We are proud of the many specialist building, repair, maintenance and refurbishment projects we’ve carried out for the MOD and its prime contractors since the early 1900s and through two world wars. Projects which have helped shape the lives of service men, women and their families.
We understand the challenges, specialist skill sets and protocols of delivering capital works projects in secure and live military environments where facilities must remain operational. Our long and successful working relationship with the MOD and Armed Forces is based on effective project planning and management; prompt and faultless delivery and a collaborative and flexible partnering approach.
Beard has built some of the most challenging sports and leisure schemes around today. What makes us stand out from our competitors is our in-depth knowledge and understanding of building high performance facilities for this sector and the value and innovation we bring to every construction project.
Our wide-ranging capabilities ensure we can deliver everything from new sports, recreation and fitness facilities, club renovations and extensions to refurbishments of hotels, public houses and restaurants. We improve facilities and add value whilst minimising disruption by careful planning and programming.

This project represented a massive
undertaking, not only in terms of the
physical scale of works, but also in the
complexities involved within the buildings
themselves. We were delighted to work
with Beard to meet these exacting
demands. With on-going communication,
a focus on finding solutions to the
inevitable stumbling blocks we all faced,
Beard have delivered an extremely high
quality Sports Centre.

We understand the unique challenges and exceptional quality craftsmanship required in religious building works. We are also mindful that every religious building is a sacred place of worship and our approach is to be sensitive, unobtrusive and safe.
Our customer projects range from highly complex new build schemes, like the technically demanding elliptical construction of the multi-award-winning Bishop Edward King Chapel at Cuddesdon or a mosque with a self-supporting roof in Surrey, to the careful and painstaking restoration and refurbishment of a listed 13th-century church.
Whatever the project, our skilled project teams are experts in combining modern methods of construction and sustainability with traditional craft skills to create beautiful, more energy-efficient religious buildings which deliver long-term savings and benefits.

Whether you require a new build warehouse or an office refurbishment, Beard can deliver a high quality, cost efficient project, which can be designed to meet your carbon reduction commitment. We can help you make your premises greener, more energy-efficient and safer, more productive places to work.
Our experienced commercial project teams understand the challenges, needs and demands of office building and industrial schemes. We not only design and construct new buildings but transform old ones into high performance premises which deliver real value and improve productivity.
We are very pleased with the completed building for our new museum, Being
Brunel. Externally it complements the existing dockyard vernacular (South
Side) yet provides a striking modern new building on the North Side. Internally,
the height of the building creates a unique sense of space within the museum.
This was a technically difficult site with tight constraints on both access and
associated services. Beard overcame all of these challenges and worked very
closely with the Trust to ensure that Brunel’s SS Great Britain visitor attraction
could remain open to the public throughout the works.

Beard has many years’ experience in designing, building, extending and refurbishing buildings for the health and specialist care sector across the South of England. Our customers range from NHS hospitals, primary care and private healthcare organisations, to medical charities, care homes and providers of specialist care.
The projects we deliver are equally diverse. We build, upgrade, refurbish and extend primary care medical facilities such as GP surgeries and deliver complex healthcare projects like intensive care units, MRI suites, clinical and scientific research facilities. We also build, extend and refurbish care homes for the elderly and for people with special needs.
Our experienced project teams design, build and refurbish facilities to meet the exacting performance and quality standards the police, fire and ambulance services demand.
We are used to working in live operational environments where construction programmes need to be flexible and geared to ensuring that day-to-day operations are not disrupted, or security compromised. Our projects include accommodation schemes, specialist building refurbishments, extensions and upgrades; all designed to improve productivity and provide efficiency savings.

On every construction project the strength of the relationship between the customer and construction partner has a direct bearing on its success. We always strive to create an open, collaborative environment on all of our projects.
We like to get to know our customers, understanding their drivers and needs. We believe that this understanding and collaborative approach allows us to accommodate challenges and put forward effective solutions. Getting involved in a project early allows us to provide guidance to our customers on construction methods, materials, supply chain and site set-up. This can help pre-empt potential issues and drive costs down.
Our approachBeard have been a fantastic team to work with
from start to finish. They showed exceptional
discretion when managing a complex build
within a busy clinical area and were responsive
and accommodating to our team’s requests.
The quality of the building work is second to
none and the team have been both professional
and friendly throughout the project.

Beard has held ISO14001 accreditation since 2004 and we conduct an environmental review every year to determine any changes within Beard which may affect our Environmental Management Plan.
In addition, every project has an Environmental Management Plan, identifying any risks and the mitigating procedures proposed.
We are well-versed in dealing with environmental challenges. In conjunction with the relevant authorities, we have provided bat runs, re-routed badgers and protected newts and nesting birds.
You can be assured that we will work to minimise the impact of construction on any project we undertake.
What we ended up with was exactly
what we wanted. It’s highly effective,
costs nothing to heat and acoustically
is a very high standard.

Our people
Looking after our people is second nature to us. They are the reason we are so successful and account for our high level of repeat business. Our culture is of family values and of respect for each other. It is the foundation on which Beard is built.
Our focus on employee engagement led to us achieving IIP Gold Accreditation in 2011 and 2014; which we were proud to retain in 2017 under the new, more rigorous Generation Six Investors in People Framework. We also focus on providing our employees with the necessary opportunities for career development and personal growth, including our very successful trainee programme.
Employing people you believe in. And believing in those people. This is the Beard way.

One of the most positive aspects
of this review revolved around staff
perception that Beard is a really good
place to work. They remarked on the
friendly, family atmosphere within the
organisation. The Trainee programme
is, in their words, “second to none”,
and all trainees highlighted the
exceptional support and dedication of
the Chairman. The review confirmed
that staff feel valued and proud to
work for Beard. In comparison to
many other organisations I have
worked with in this industry sector,
I was very impressed with the vibrant
and supportive attitude within Beard.
I am delighted to confirm that Beard
has gained the Gold award during this
