What is Bugsy Malone?

Bugsy Malone is a show/film that has a cast of just children who live in 1920’s Chicago it revolves around Bugsy Malone who is a half Irish half Italian he claims to do odd jobs like being a boxing scout. He is a regular visitor to Fat Sam Staccetto’s speakeasy and that’s where we meet Blousey Brown, Tallulah, Fat Sam and his Gang of Hoodlums (Knuckles, Louis, Snake Eyes, Ritzy, Angelo) along with more characters.

What is a speakeasy?

A speakeasy was a illegal club during the prohibition era in America (when drinking, importing, selling or making alcohol was illegal. They were normally run by mobsters.

Bugsy Malone (Paramount Films) the film was released in 1976 after the immediate success of the film Alan Parker leapt to write a full length musical to Paul Williams’s score and words and 1978 it hit Broadway like a train. It had two songs originally written by Paul Williams but not used in t he film “That’s why they call him Dandy” and “Show business”. The West End run first started in 1983 followed by a revival in 1997. The rights for the show belong to Musical Theatre International.
