(StatePoint) Weatheriz-ing your home for each sea-son can make it more com-fortable – but how to do it can be confusing. Here are four common weatherizing myths – busted! – to help get your home ready for cooler weather to come. Myth 1: It doesn’t mat-ter where your thermostat is placed. Truth: Location, loca-tion, location! You may be spending more on heating and cooling than you need to be if your thermostat is in the wrong place. Placed in direct sunlight, you run the risk of getting false read-ings, as it can “think” the room is warmer than it actually feels, caus-ing your air conditioner to turn on when it isn’t needed. Sim-ilarly, a ther-mostat placed near the kitchen often reads that the home is far warmer than it truly is due to the stove and oven. The best location is on an interior wall, central-ly located and near areas where you spend the most time, ensuring these rooms are the most comfortable. Myth 2: Closed curtains and blinds in cold weather prevent heat escape. Truth: According to the Department of Energy, shades and drapes can re-duce heat loss from a warm room by up to 10 percent. However, opening curtains

Weatherization Myths – Debunked!and blinds during the day when direct sunlight hits can also allow for a warm-ing effect. In winter, draper-ies should be closed at dusk but opened at dawn. In addition, heat escape through windows can be prevented with window in-sulation products such as Duck brand Roll-On Win-dow Kits, which create a barrier between outdoor air and a home’s interior, helping block drafts and air leaks. And, it’s also a myth that these are hard

to install: A pre-taped edge makes for easy roll-on ap-plication, requiring no mea-suring, while fitting snug-gly to indoor window frames to provide an airtight, crys-tal-clear seal. Myth 3: It’s expensive to draft-proof your home. Truth: Homeowners can actually save hundreds of dollars annually on heating and cooling costs with prop-er weatherization early in the season. How do you do it? There are many inexpen-sive, do-it-yourself weath-erization products that are

easy on the wallet and easy to install, requiring mini-mal -- if any -- tools. Windows and doors are the two largest draft sourc-es in any home and should be top priorities for home-owners. Duck brand MAX Strength Silicone Weath-erstrip Seals are quick to install and seal various size gaps around windows and doors that may be allowing air to escape. Myth 4: It’s cheaper to keep your home at a con-stant temperature.

Truth: A common mis-conception is that it’s better to keep your home at a constant tem-perature, even when you’re not home. However, if the system runs less during the day, it uses less energy. Accord-ing to Energy.gov, you can save as much as 10 percent a year on heat-ing and cooling

by turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees from its normal setting for eight hours a day. Still need more help? For additional tips and in-formation, text “Weather” to 84444 to access Duck brand’s Project Selector, an online resource for project guides, instructional videos and more, or visit Duck-Brand.com. Don’t let common myths scare you. Weatherizing can be an affordable, easy do-it-yourself project -- es-pecially if you plan ahead.

Windows and doors are the two largest draft sources in any home and should be top priorities for home-owners.

Answers on page 7

My friend big John re-lated to me, not long ago, that he and his wife Don-na read my column every week. He comes in from Grand Island to attend church in his old Riverside neighborhood and picks up a copy of the Rocket at the YMCA. John and I are both members of Kiwanis, a worldwide service or-ganization specializing in helping the youth of America. It was at a Ki-wanis New York District Convention held at Lake Placid, New York back in the early 80’s where my venture begins. We remember Lake Placid as the place of the 1980 Winter Olympics and the Miracle on Ice. Unknown college hock-ey players upsetting the mighty Russian profes-sional hockey team. The Russians had won the gold medal in hockey the previ-ous four times. A win was an almost impossible feat and will be remembered forever as the biggest American victory in Olym-pic history... It was also the highlight of the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. So here we are at Lake Placid for the convention. Nice little town located in what is really upstate New York. Quaint with shops and boutiques, defi-nitely a tourist attraction. What made it even better

The Lugewas some of the structures from the Olympics were still in place. Ski Jumps, ice arena, and the major sled runs. Especially the luge. The luge is a one person sled that is basi-cally just a high speed downhill ride. It just so happened that they were offering rides on the luge for tourist for $20. This was the actual luge trail of the Olympics. Only dif-ference being in the middle of summer there was no ice. No problem, they put wheels on the sled. Now who would not want to go on this ride down the same run that the Olympians did? No question, I wanted to do it. So over the objec-tions of my wife and friend John and his wife, I asked the attendant how safe it was and he assured me it only reached a speed of 30 MPH. Did not seem that fast, at that time. They told me to lay down flat on my back on the sled. They strapped me in and on comes the helmet. All I could see was the top of my feet and the tunnel we started in. I asked where the brakes were and was informed there are no brakes. It is just a straight downhill ride except for the curves. How do you steer? No need to steer you just go. On my old sled we put our feet on a cross board that kind of steered, some-

what. And we either sat up or laid facing forward. Our hands or our feet were on the steering board. You could see where you were going. This sled had noth-ing, no steering, no brakes, all you see is up and your feet. Too late to back out now so here we go. Just a downhill sleigh ride. Done it hundreds of times before as a kid or on a toboggan as an adult. Not!! I had watched the luge on TV but in my anticipa-tion to do this, forgot about the turns. You do not just make a turn, you have to actually go up on a curved sloped wall sideways. The start is like any sleigh ride. Starts out slow and gradually picks up speed, the further you get into the ride the faster you go. The first turn was not as bad as it was on the slow side and you just tilt a little up the wall. The further you travel the faster you go. The second turn, the wall is higher and you go much higher with more of a tilt. The speed increases to 30 miles per hour. You are whipping. 30 MPH is not that fast in a closed in automobile but laying ex-posed on you back with no way to slow down seemed like 100 MPH. You hit the last turn and you go way up on the wall at what seems like rocket speed(-No pun intended). It felt like I was flying as it was defying gravity. I think I saw my life pass before me. What a ride, now how do you stop this thing? Simple, the last part of the ride is up hill and two men catch you at the top. First thing I did was see if my pants were soiled. I am sure this ride is no more intense than a

ride on some roller coast-ers. Difference is on most of those rides you can see where you are going. Here all the see in up and the top of your feet. You do not know you are going up the wall until you are up there. It felt like you were going to take off. Anyway, I did ride the same run some of our Olympics heroes did and for that it was enough to make it worthwhile. I had asked my friend John to take a picture from one of the bridges I went un-der. He said I was nothing but a blur when I passed. By the time the camera clicked I was gone. This experience may have been the reason I passed on a ride up in the Alps in Switzerland. It was a zip line from one mountain top to anoth-er and back. Just that it

was two miles up and the ground was so far down you could not make out anything. I was about to do it under the protest of my wife. Not sure those Swiss know about cables and wires, know they are good at making watches and cheese but this did not look so safe. How would they know if anyone fell? Two miles down, so I passed. The cable car ride getting up there was scary enough. Do you have a birth-day greeting you would like to see here? Birth-days, anniversaries, in-teresting pictures, short stories or even a 500 word column of interest to your neighbors. Send them to me and I will see what I can do. Nothing political or controversial. Send to [email protected]

This Week’s Featured Friend:

Calypso, the mythological nymph was known as beguiling. Our beautiful, young lady is quite the same. Straight from the streets of Buffalo, Calypso is learning to enjoy the love of a safe indoor life. Her fear of other cats re-quires her to be an only pet. She would prefer a very patient human friend who understands she will be her one and only once she is comfortable (foster home knows it is possible). Please help put Calypso in a Buffalo home and off the streets forever.

With all the advances in treatment that have come about in recent years, a long, happy, and pro-ductive life with Crohn’s disease is more possible now than ever before. But as you approach old age, it’s important to consid-er how your strategy for managing your condition may need to change in re-sponse to other changes you’re going through. Even if your Crohn’s diagnosis is recent — as many as 16 percent of people with inflamma-tory bowel disease (IBD) are diagnosed at age 60 or older, according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foun-dation — there are im-portant considerations that don’t apply to young-er people. Older adults are more likely to be managing more than one health con-dition and taking multi-ple medications, which can impact Crohn’s treat-ment. Your Crohn’s dis-ease itself can also change as you age — your symp-toms may worsen, dimin-ish, or simply take differ-ent forms. It’s important to dis-cuss any such changes with your healthcare team so that you can work with your doctors to reduce symptoms and

Crohn‘s Disease and Senior Care

prevent long-term com-plications. Follow these seven tips for navigating Crohn’s disease as a senior. 1. Keep Other Health Conditions Under Con-trol Older people’s immune systems aren’t as strong as those of younger peo-ple, making vaccinations even more important — especially if you’re taking an immunosuppressant drug. 2. Look Out for Drug Reactions and Interac-tions While other health conditions can, by them-selves, complicate your approach to Crohn’s treatment, the major is-sue is the impact of med-ications. For example, if you’re taking a blood thinner for cardiovas-cular issues, you may be at greater risk for Crohn’s-related gastroin-testinal (GI) bleeding. 3. Symptoms of a Flare May Be Different in Old-er Adults Crohn’s disease tends to produce milder symp-toms in older adults. But it can still lead to the same kinds of complica-tions that younger adults sometimes experience with the disease, includ-ing intestinal scarring,

bowel obstruction, and a higher risk of colorectal cancers. 4. If Your Symptoms Increase or Disappear, Re-visit Your Treatment With Your Doctor 5. Make Sure Your Crohn’s Disease Isn’t Masking Other Condi-tions A number of different issues can cause diges-tive problems with age, including reduced saliva production, reduced stom-ach-acid production, and reduced pancreatic func-tion. Sometimes, digestive problems unrelated to Crohn’s may be mistaken for a Crohn’s flare, result-ing in unnecessary treat-ment that doesn’t solve the underlying issue. 6. Eat a Healthy Diet and Look Out for Malnu-trition It’s normal for older people to experience a change in appetite that leads them to eat less. But in people with Crohn’s disease, it’s especially im-portant that caloric intake not drop too low, as this can weaken the immune system and increase a person’s risk of infections. 7. Pay Special Atten-tion to Dental Care As people with Crohn’s get older, it’s increasingly important to make sure that their teeth are work-ing well. To ensure good dental health, it is recom-mended that you see your dentist at least annual-ly, making sure that any dentures or partials are fitting well, and practice good oral hygiene, includ-ing brushing and flossing your teeth regularly.
