Skills – Budgeting Rationale: Tiering this lesson allows students to begin at their current level and progress at their own speed. Benchmarks: Transitional Skills, Math DI Strategy: Tiered assignments Differentiate What? Process Differentiate How? Readiness and Interest Resources needed: 1. At least two Sunday and one week of newspaper classified and grocery ads 2. Budget outline, including fixed/flexible (more detailed for independent living situation for advanced students) or necessary/luxury (less detailed such as allowance spending for less independent learners). Teacher preparation: 1. Provide introductory lesson on budgeting and terms. 2. Brainstorm with class on fixed/necessities, flexible/luxury items, varying expenses, wants/needs, etc. 3. Collect newspapers. 4. Prepare worksheets at different ability levels (copy attached) (day-week-month allowance for lower; independent living by week-month-year for higher).
