DrINKAblE TAP WATErAs compared with other European cities, thequality of tap water in Budapest is among thebest. According to a UNESCO survey, Hunga-rys tap water ranks 14th out of 122 countries.

For example, in 2009, the tap water comingfrom the water well of Tatabnya was of cial-ly registered as mineral water, so the regionsinhabitants drink mineral water from the tap for half a forint per litre.

The light and fresh logo is a blue ribbon, which symbolis-es the Danube with the bridges across the river. Variousassociations can be indirectly discovered in the symbol, for example a heart, which refers to the loveable natureof the city, or the rst letter of the cit y, the letter B.

The Danube, which is shaped by the ribbon stripe, re-

fers to the values which are represented by water andriver: continuous revival, rebirth, dynamics, transforma-tion and refreshment. It gains its power from the rich andcolourful past, and it runs towards a future full of hope, connecting the worlds of east and west.

With parks brimming with attractions, museum flled with treas-ures, pleasure boats sailing up and down the scenic Danube Bend,Turkish-era thermal baths belching steam and a nightlie throbbinguntil dawn most nights, the Hungarian capital is one o the Conti-

Budapest wont let you get bored. The secret places hidden around thesights familiar from postcards, centuries-old pomp and modern minimalism, cultural variety and natural treasures Budapest is the place to go for along weekend and maybe stay for a lifetime.

    1. B Cl

From the Pest side, the beautifully lit Buda Castleshows its magnicent facade, and the most amazingview to the city is from the castle, too. But thats notthe only reason why the Buda Castle is the top sight tosee in Budapest. Every corner, nook and cranny holdsa secret here, as there are over 800 years of histo-ry packed into its stones. From 13th century ruins to

the neo-baroque dome all the ages left their marks onthe palace. Visiting Mathias Church, the FishermensBastion and Holy Trinity Square (Szenthromsg tr)is an essential part of walks in the Castle District, andthe reward of your endurance awaits in one of the old-est confectioneries of the city, at Ruszwurm.

    2. prlim

The most grandiose building on the Pest embank-ment reminds some of a huge wedding cake, someof a stunning cathedral. The 17,745 sqm neo-goth-ic Parliament is the largest administrative buildingin the country and the second largest parliamentin Europe. This visionary synthesis of Hungarianeclectic architecture boasts 29 interior staircases,

242 statues, 40 kilos of gold on the walls, a num-ber of frescoes and paintings; and is home to theNational Assembly of Hungary and the Holy Crownof Hungary.

The second largest synagogue in the world is rel-atively young, it was consecrated in 1859. Thesynagogues construction served two purposes:the community needed a temple in keeping withtraditions and also encouraging liberal ideas. De-signed by Ludwig Frster, the synagogue wasbuilt in Moorish style and thanks to its twin tow-

ers adorned with onion-shaped domes, it has amagical oriental flavor. The neighboring JewishMuseum tells the story of the holocaust in Hun-gary and also showcases objects used in Jew-ish festivals.

    4. Mrgr IlMargaret Island is one of the most multifunctional

parts of Budapest; it is the perfect spot for picnics, badminton matches, running, and chestnut collect-ing. The island shows a different face every sea-son, in the fall the hundred-year-old trees seemablaze in a million burning colors, mystical fog lin-gers above the channels of the Japanese gardenand the flamboyant colors of the rose garden fade

into subtlety. Life on the island takes on a soft-er rhythm, its the time of long walks, but if falldoesnt equal idling your time away in your books, hop on a Bringhint (multi-person bike) for a ridealong the island, then sit on a bench on the river-bank, as the sun is always shining on one side ofthe island.

    5. si sh BilicThe tallest building in Budapest (shared with

the Parliament, both being 96 m high) is

home to not only works of major 19th century a rt-ists, but also the mummified right hand of the

founding king of Hungary, Saint Stephen, whichhas been miraculously preserved since the 11thcentury. Being the tallest in a flat city equalsgreat views take the 302 steps (or the elevator )leading to the 65-meter-high terrace of the domeand enjoy Budapest at your feet.

    6. ary avStrolling along the 19th century palaces, thepomp and romantic atmosphere of the past arealmost tangible; no wonder that Budapests mostbeautiful boulevard is a World Heritage site. Be-tween Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street and Oktogon youllwalk past elegant coffee houses, luxury stores

and the stunning State Opera House. TowardsHeroes Square, the boulevards opens up and youcan take a peep into stately villas from under thetrees. But be careful to leave enough room for thecyclists, too!

    7. Hro sqrConstruction of the most monumental square start-ed at the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Con-quest. Learn about Hungarian history just by marvel-ling at the statues of the square: Archangel Gabriel(who, according to the legend, told St Stephen in adream that he would be the rst king of Christian

Hungary) protects the country from atop a 36-metercolumn. At the base, youll nd the seven chieftainsof the conquering Magyar tribes, led by rpd. The14 statues of the colonnades are of kings and rep-resentative gures of the country, and the allegori-cal bronze gures of War, Peace, Wealth and Labortop the outer edges. Heroes Square is not only a

memento of the past however, tourists, skateboard-ers and bike acrobats alike come here to pay trib-ute to the heroes.

    8. Ciy prkThe worlds first public park (aye, thats Buda-

pests Vrosliget) begins right behind HeroesSquare. This is where Hungarians go to feed theducks and sit by the lake soaking up the first andlast rays of the sun, where we go to kick about theyellowing leaves in the fall, and where we skateand soak in the steamy hot water in the winter. This is where haltered giraffes were walked to the

Zoo, where good comrades marched, waved theirflags and ate sausages every May 1st, and wherethe Hungaroring nearly got built in the 80s.

    9. db promWalk along this riverside oasis created around

    100 years ago, boasting chic cafs, restaurants,comfy benches and lots of quirky little statueswhich make for a perfect photo opportunity;

like the statue of Little Princess sitting by thetram stop at Vigad Square (so charming

that even Prince Charles had to get a copy of itfor home). This World Heritage site has alwaysbeen the center of cosmopolitan Budapest, andthe graceful bridges, the view to the Buda Cas-tle, the 19th century lampposts and the romanticbuilding of Vigad may give you an idea why.

    10. CilThe massive white-stoned fortress sitting on topof Gellrt Hill and the Statue of Liberty are bothworth a short hike (or ride on bus no. 27). Builtby the Habsburg dynasty after the revolution of1848-1849, the Citadels original function was

to keep an eye on the rebellious Hungarians. Butby the 20th century, this symbol of oppressionbecame one of the most popular touristy place, which comes as no surprise if look at this beauti-ful city at your feet

From Bla IV toCharles IV every king of Hungary had some kind ofconnection to the church; some built extensions to it,some sold its treasures on bargain prices, and somewere crowned to be king here.1st district, Szenthromsg tr

Lhr ChrchThe oldest Lutheran church of Budapest was built in1808 in line with Protestant Puritanism. The clean-cut neo-classicist design placed the cross not ontoa spire but on a tympanum resting on four Doric col-umns. The only striking ornament of the inter ior is itsmarble altar and altarpiece above it, a paraphraseon Raffaellos Transguratio. The church togetherwith a nearby nursery, secondary school and libraryis known as the Lutheran island of Budapest.5th district, Dek tr

Theinstitution used in 1944-45, as well as in 1956 has preserved its past, portraying the everyday heroes who served the cause of medical carerather than destruction even in the hardest moments. During the ColdWar, the institution kept top secret up to 2002, was to function as a nu-

clear bunker in case of a nuclear attack.
