Introduction

Everyday,wedareourstudentstopushthemselvesinnewdirections;tohonetheirstrengths;tonurture

skillsthatdon’tcomeeasily.Wemustexpectnolessofourselvesasaschoolandasacommunity.Wearealearningorganizationthatstrivestoconsistentlyandsteadilyadvanceourschool,applyingthebest

ofcurrentresearchandteachingmethodstoenhancestudentlearninganddevelopment.Likewise,all

aspectsofourschool,includingourcommunity,ourfacilities,andourfinances,playacrucialroleinthe

educationofourchildren.Assuch,theymustbefosteredactively.Thisstrategicplanwillguideour

actionsoverthenextthreetofiveyearstoachievethis.

TheBuckleySchoolStrategicPlan isa directoutgrowthofour2009-2010CaliforniaAssociationof

IndependentSchools(CAIS)/WesternAssociationofSchoolsandColleges (WASC) self-study and

accreditationvisitingcommitteereport;12monthsand357pagesofintenseself-reflectionandexternal

analysis that examined every aspect of the school including: our mission, philosophy and values,

program,andtheschool’sfutureexcellence,viability,andsustainability.Theself-studyinvolvedasmany

voicesandviewpointsaspossible—thoseofparents,students,alumni,trustees,formertrustees,parents

ofalumni,andeverymemberofthefacultyandstaff.Itwastrulyacollaborativeprocess.

The Strategic PlanningCommittee of the Board of Trustees earlier had begun identifying school

priorities.Itworkedwiththeschool’sCAIS/WASCcommitteechairsthroughouttheself-studyprocess,

andtheCAIS/WASCSchool-WideActionPlanscreatedthefoundationofthisstrategicplan,which

focusesonfourareas:

  • Buckley’s distinctive 4-Fold Plan of Education and ensuring

its strength and relevance for students in the 21st century

• Leadership in the area of diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion

  • Community and school culture as integral to a Buckley education

• Financial strength

Withourplancapturedonpaper,weeagerlyanticipatebringingittolifewiththesameenergyand

integritythatourstudentsbringtobearoneveryaspectofthe4-FoldPlan.

Ensurethatoureducationalprogramretainsbothitshighqualityandrelevanceinarapidly

changingeducationalandculturalenvironment;thatstudentsarefullyengagedlearnersinallareas

experience,andintellectualpreparationtheyneedtosucceedasglobalcitizensinthe21stcentury.

  • MaximizethebenefitsofourcohesiveKindergarten–12curriculumthroughcurriculum  developmentandprofessionaldevelopmentthataddressgrade-leveltransitionsandissues

  thatcrossdivisionsandacademicdisciplines.

  • Provideopportunitiesforstudentstothinkandactasglobalcitizensthrougharelevant

  curriculumthatemphasizesglobalperspectives,multiculturalism,environmentally

  sustainablepractices,andexperientiallearningactivitiesathomeandabroad.

  • Retain,support,andrecruitahighlyqualifiedanddiversefacultythatisengagedinthelife

  oftheschoolandprofessionaldevelopment,passionateaboutlife-longlearning,and  connectedwithstudentsandalumni.

  • Ensuretheprogramhastheresources,andfacultyhavethenecessaryresourcesandskills,to

  providestrongsupportforstudents’individuallearningstylesanddifferences,while

Thisplantouchesallmembersofourcommunityandassuchrequiresthesupport,effortandcommitmentofallofus—fromtheleadershipofourBoardandadministration,totheeffortand

inputofourteachers,staffmembers,parents,students,andalumni.

We’recommittedtomovingthisplanfromwordsonpapertolifeoncampus,andworkalreadyis

underwaydevelopingactionplansforeachgoal.Appropriateadministratorsandfacultymembersare

assignedtomanageeachofthespecificitemsintheplan,andtheywillworkwithothermembers

oftheBuckleycommunityinimplementation.Progresswillbereviewedinthebi-monthlymeetings

oftheStrategicPlanningCommitteeoftheBoardofTrustees,andwelookforwardtoproviding

updatestoyouasweworktogethertoadvanceourschoolandensurethatBuckleystudentscontinue

toreceivethebesteducation,todayandtomorrow.
