It may leave motorists seeing red, but it seems thatthe colour of your car is responsible for how attractiveit is to birds. Bright red cars are a magnet for morebird droppings than vehicles of any other colour whilegreen cars are most likely to escape from the unwelcome attentions of our feathery friends. A study recorded the frequency that birds left theirmark on cars in five cities around the UK and foundgreen cars suffer least, followed by silver, while whitevehicles escaped more often than black in analysis of1,140 cars in Brighton, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchesterand Bristol. Drivers were also asked how quickly theyremoved the offending evidence. Only 17% - one insix - wipe off deposits as soon as they spot them,20% take action within a couple of days while 55%wait until the next wash. The remaining eight per centnever wash their cars or leave it to someone else. But as well as being unsightly, insurance industry figures show bird droppings can be an expensiveproblem and estimate the damage caused by poop-stained paintwork costs motorists £57m a yearin unnecessary repairs. A car cleaning expert says:"This research does have a serious side because theproblem annoys drivers, causes damaged paintworkand affects the value of vehicles. To protect yourbodywork from damage, droppings should be carefully cleaned off as soon as possible."

Over the past decade, online dating has gone from beingsomething that was frownedupon or considered a little kookyor even dangerous, to somethingthat most people think is a normal way to meet a partner, In fact, a recent survey by theOxford Internet Institute revealsthat over a third of us have triedonline dating, with users in their40s and above being the mostlikely to have signed up to a dating website. For women in particular, theattractions of online dating oftenrevolve around security issuesand intentional dating rather than leaving things to chance. Whereasyounger people are more likely totake an attitude of "I'll meet someone at some point", olderpeople are far more focused onfinding a partner by actively goingout and looking, rather than passively waiting for a potentialmate to appear in their life. The rise of online dating in the UKappears a trend which is likely tocontinue over the next few years,as more and more people meettheir partners through this mediumand success stories continue tocome out. Brand new dating website Love isDating has just launched with theaim of bringing together more UKcouples. Spokewoman Karen Barr says"Ten years ago, if you told someone that you met your partner online, you would often bethe recipient of a shocked look orsome rather prurient questions. "But as the internet has becomeso much more a part of people'slives, internet dating has lost that

sort of nerdy or seedy aura that itused to have and is now acceptedas a very efficient and safe way tomeet potential partners. "In another 10 years' time wemight all be asking not 'How didyou meet?' but 'What site did youmeet on?' We believe the rightrelationship makes you happy. Andeveryone needs a little happinessin their lives." But there's no point in joining anonline dating site if you aren'tproactive. It's no good putting together theperfect profile and then sittingwaiting for the emails to comeflooding in. If you want to get back in the dating game, you have to emailthe people who you find attractive.Don't worry if they don't reply -there are plenty more fish in thevirtual sea. It's also important to tailor youremail. A generic copy and pastejob can be detected a mile off andis pretty insulting. Put a bit of time

in and make it personal - it's muchmore likely to pay off. But remember not to tell them your lifestory! At this stage it's advisable not tomention your ex - it's a sure signthat you're still focused on a pastrelationship. Use that first email as a chance tospark their curiosity. Keep it clean, polite and to the point - and throwin a little humour if possible. It issupposed to be fun!

If so then you're not alone as the latest marketresearch suggests that current perceptions aboutcoffee in the UK are completely off the boil. But thetruth is that your regular cup of coffee can count aspart of your daily fluid intake and can help protectyou against an array of diseases. There are many misconceptions about coffee. Forexample, 61 per cent of us don't even realise that itcan count toward our daily fluid intake. Its healthbenefits are also unknown, as 84 per cent of us don'tknow that coffee consumption has been shown toprotect against cognitive decline and certain otherneurological disorders such as Alzheimer's diseaseand Parkinson's disease. Not only this but coffeemay protect against the development of type-twodiabetes and 74 per cent of us have no idea. GP at Richford Gate Medical Practice Dr Sarah Jarvissays: "We need to be aware that there are many mis-conceptions about coffee that are simply not true. There is strong scientific evidence to suggest thatmoderate coffee consumption (four to five cups perday) may confer a variety of health benefits andshould be enjoyed when we take our breaks in theday."

As well as beingenjoyable, andsafe in modera-tion, caffeine canincrease your lev-els of alertness, helping you tostay on top formwhen you are atyour desk or inthat all-important meeting. Going for that well earnedcoffee break should be part of our daily routine, yet,63 per cent of us have tried to reduce the number ofcups we drink each day because of myths aboutcoffee. The main ones are outlined below. Top Coffee Myths Coffee is an addictive drug? Three out of four coffee drinkers have tried to reducethe number of cups of coffee consumed each daybecause they think coffee is addictive. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claimwhen coffee is consumed in moderation Coffeedehydrates you? Over 50 per cent of coffee drinkers have tried toreduce their number of daily cups because they thinkcoffee is dehydrating. Scientific evidence shows thata cup of coffee will contribute to your daily fluidintake so enjoy your coffee without feeling guilty!

Gardens should excite all the fivesenses – especially at the height ofsummer, says Buckingham GardenCentre’s Chris DayIt’s July folks! Whilst TVs andradios bellow out the latest WorldCup results and gripping, exciting,edge-of-seat rallies take place over atWimbledon, it’s the garden where manyof us really want to escape into and forgood reason!Whilst colour should be one of the mainattractions in our gardens, filling your gardenwith fragrance, by planting scented plants inand around your patio, is an absolute must.Think about it for a moment. A patio is the perfect spot to grow scented plants because it’sthe one place in the garden you are sure topause for long enough to really appreciate the perfume. The fragrance will be all the more potentif the patio is positioned in a sunny and shelteredspot. The extra warmth will help release the scent

molecules and the gentle air movementswill allow even subtle fragrances time tobuild up. Here you can sit and be consumed by every aroma as it driftspast, and this can be even from bas-kets stuffed with sweetly scentedhybrid petunias.

So, which scents works best? Well, there are four main groups starting

with ‘sweet’. Think Buddleja,Clematis, Honeysuckle, many

Roses, Sweet Alyssum,Sweet Box, Sweet Rocket,Sweet William, Sweet Peasand Artemisia abrotanumfoliage providing some ofthe best.

In the ‘spicy’ category wehave the likes of Dianthus, my

all time favourite (pictured thepopular garden pink ‘Memories’),

Curry Plant, Phlox, Rock Rose, Chocolate Vine andsome Roses.

Fragrant plants vary considerably in the

amount of fragrance theyproduce so you need to bear

this in mind when deciding which plants to chooseand where to plant them. Often, plants describedas ‘scented’ have a very slight odour that, although pleasant enough, is barely perceptibleonce planted in the garden. However, plants withan appealing delicate fragrance are worth giving ago if they produce a lot of blooms. The sweetlyscented, early flowering Clematis armandii andsummer-flowering Clematis flammula are two goodexamples, as is spicy Dianthus that makes a greatpatio edging and container plant. On the otherhand, some plants renowned for having a powerfulfragrance, such as Mock Orange (Philadelphus)and Lilium regale, are so potent that they canoverpower a seating area with fragrance when infull bloom, so they are best sited further down thegarden to allow only well-diluted wafts to reach thepatio. The appreciation of fragrance is also veryindividual, so that what appeals to one personmay smell awful to another. Therefore, the goldenrule when choosing fragrant plants is to sniff them

in flower beforeyou buy.Best of all, fragrance is not only about the flowers.Plants with aromatic leaves are particularly suitablefor planting in patio suntraps - in fact it’s the onlyplace you will really appreciate their full potential.Opt for plants such as Lavender (English andFrench), scented Pelargoniums (Lemon, Orangeand even Cola scented!) and most herbs, releaseheavy scent molecules that slowly evaporate fromthe plants’ foliage. So, the warmer and more sheltered the patio, the greater the scent produced.Plant them to cascade over the edges of thepaving where the foliage will be brushed or lightlycrushed underfoot to release even more fragrance. Some low-growing herbs, such as Thyme andChamomile, can be used as fragrant fillers betweencracks in the patio, too.So, how do you achieve a fragrant patio we hear youask? Make the most of fragrant flowers by planting acombination of scents you really like – so visit theGarden Centre and sniff out the best fragrances. It isalso worth taking into consideration the floweringtimes of each plant, so that you can orchestrate asuccession of scents throughout the summer. The

height of release is also worthbearing in mind. For example, fragrant climbing roses andhoneysuckles scrambling overa trellis or a wall at the back of

a patio will release their fragrance at nose level asyou walk past, while aromatic herbs are best plantedbetween paving stones where you are most likely tolay on a lounger in the sun with your nose close tothe ground, or trample them in passing. Someplants, such as Sweet Rocket (Hesperis matronalis),Night-Scented Stock (Matthiola bicornis) andEvening Primrose (Oenothera biennis), produce theirbest fragrance in the evening to attract night-flyinginsects, including certain moths, that pollinate theirflowers. Planting one or more of these in a bordernext to a patio will add a new dimension to summerevenings and alfresco dining. As a finishing touch, grow one of the headily scrumptiously fragrant Liliumregale in a pot to add scent even on breezy days -they can always be moved further down the gardenif their powerful fragrance becomes overpoweringduring still conditions. If planting to cover an arbouror pergola, keep these three types of clematis onyour wish list – C. Aromatica, C. viticella ‘BettyCorning’ (pictured with Rose ‘Compassion’) and C.Flammula. Make sure you plant at least one of thesenext to your favourite climbing rose to help extendthe fragrance season. These clematis should providesome welcome blooms between the flushes of theroses through the summer.
