As a mum I have neveraccepted to wait months formy child to be seen. The time scale is so differentfor a child; months of feelinganxious or depressed seemlike forever to them, they feelabandoned. HHHHeeeeaaaalllltttthhhh &&&&BBBBeeeeaaaauuuuttttyyyyIt's been a very busy year for the staff at B3 Fitness since they opened their doors in February. BB33 is a new strength and conditioning gym located on the Buckingham Road IndustrialEstate, it offers a extensive range of professionalplate loaded equipment, free weights, Olympic lifting platforms, functional fitness Rig, separateCV suite and a strongman yard.

Gym instructor Adam explained to me the benefitsof strength and conditioning training. When properly performed, strength and conditioningtraining can provide significant functional benefitsand improvement in overall health, fitness andwell-being, including increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, reduced potential forinjury, increased bone density, increased metabolism, improved cardiac function, and elevated HDL (good) cholesterol. The biggest misconception people have when it come tostrength and conditioning training is they willdevelop body builder like physics... this is not true! Head PT Mark Bruce tells me some of the

members before joining thought it would be anintimidating place to come and were amazed byhow friendly and helpful everyone is and not justthe staff but other members. To be honest Ifind that most people whotrain on a regular basislove to talk about training, how they train and haveyou tried this exercise... Hewent on to tell me abouthow many female members are seeing thebenefits of the Rig Classand how some call it theirsecret weapon!

The Rig is BB33''ss functionalfitness circuit class whichis run around an impressive piece of fitnessequipment called The Rig.The class is offered to everyone on a Tuesday andThursday evening, Wednesday and Sunday mornings. It's a high intensity circuit class covering all of the fundamentals of functional fitness. Ideal for those looking for fitness, weightloss, fun group training, express fitness and amust have in your training programme if you'replanning on attempting a Wolf Run or Mud Run.

Owners Mark Chapman and Tim Fox explain howthey set out to provide a gym with state of the artequipment for like minded people who can comeand workout, share knowledge, with professionalstaff members on hand to advise and train sideby side with the members. Mark States we are not just another fitness studioor health club with rows of treadmills and a business plan to sign up customers in a contractand then forget about them.

Garden sheds are the essential must-have formany people, however Buckingham GardenCentre’s Chris Day thinks it’s time the greenhousemade a comeback. This is the perfect season to

turn your gardening greener.Choose a crisp, frostyday, and go for a neighbourhood ramble.Keep your eye out forthe glint of sun on glass, and make the most ofgaps in fences andhedges. There are lots of

empty greenhouses looking for love, and all youneed do to hug one is ask its owners if they stillwant it. If you feel less bold, check the classifieds in yourlocal paper. You might chance upon a “free todismantler” or pick up a bargain for a fraction ofthe price of a new one. However, a new green-

house, if funds allow, is likely to beone of your best investments you willmake. My first greenhouse, in the 1970s,was a wooden 6ft x 8ft structure, purchased mail-order from The DailyExpress. It was glazed with I quote“the latest corrugated rigid plasticsheeting technology!” Suffice to say, itcost me £30 and it was the catalyst tosome epic growing adventures. Sincethen I’ve had a couple of aluminiumglasshouses (Halls and Eden) andtoday a wooden potting shed with abuilt-in lean-to greenhouse, a cosy haven, whichgives you the best of both worlds. However, the best bit about acquiring a preloved,second-hand greenhouse isn’t just the bargainelement. By reusing it, you’re reinvigorating all theenergy used to make it in the first place. And ifyou’re concerned about locating spares and doingrepairs, an online search for “greenhouse spares”reveals a cornucopia of suppliers for every bit andbob imaginable.

WWhhaatt,, nnoo pprrooppaaggaattoorr??When I gave up heating my greenhouse I did invest in a windowsill electric propagator complete with 7 mini propagatortrays and lids. Many seeds germinate quite readily, albeitmore slowly, in the fluctuatingtemperatures of a sun-powered greenhouse. My propagator, despite being petite,is perfect for sowing small quantities of seeds starting from

early January with geranium seeds. Seeds thatneed a warm and constant temperature can comeindoors for a bit of pampering. A window sill inyour most inhabited room or your boiler/airingcupboard is ideal (evict those towels). Check regularly for signs of life then get them into thelight straight away. Every other day turn the traysaround to ensure well balanced growth rather thanlanky, leggy, leaning growth.

Winter vegetables - freeze and thawTo guarantee fresh pickings in deep midwinter, you need to stay ahead of the frost game. Oncea spell of prolonged freezing weather sets in, andcrops have turned dark, sagged and the com-post/soil is frozen solid, it’s impossible to harvestthem until they thaw (they’ll snap if you try).If falling temperatures are forecast, cut some ofwhat you want and store it in the fridge, or movepots of winter salad leaves to a frost-free placeindoors.Covering crops with multiple layers of horticulturalfleece (two or three at least) will give extra frostprotection, but remove it straightaway once athaw sets in.During milder spells, harvest at will, but keep thevents open and the air moving to deter fungaldiseases like grey mould (botrytis). Keep cropson the dry side and only water, sparingly, whenthey just begin to wilt. If and when you have towinter irrigate aim to do it in the morning soallowing the plants foliage to dry before nightfall.

FIVE TO SOW NOWWinter isn’t just for gazing at seed and plant catalogues. The following are best sown in pots ortrays and, unless the weather is mild, broughtindoors to germinate. There’s no need to thoroughly soak the compost after sowing (whichwe tend to do for spring and summer sowings),just moisten it lightly. Once germinated, moveseeds back to the greenhouse, only bringing themindoors on very cold nights. Don’t expect them toromp away as they would in spring; growth, depending on the weather, will be slow but steady.Salad leaves I aim to sow at least one 12cm (5in)pot of salad leaves every week and get two ormaybe three cuts per pot. Right now, the hardieroriental brassicas, green in the snow, mizuna andred mustard can be germinated indoors and willbe ready, depending on the weather, in around sixweeks.Mangetout peas 'Oregon Sugar Pod’ stands lowtemperatures better than others. Sow four seedsto a 10cm (4in) pot. Pot on into 30cm (12in) potswhen around 15cm (6in) tall and support with1.2m (4ft) long twiggy sticks, or plant in soil beds.Sweet peas I never get around to sowing inOctober, but I’ve often caught up by sowing inNovember, December or January/February. You’llstill get flowers weeks ahead of spring-sownplants.Broad beans Sowing now produces youngplants for early spring, planting either in beds within the greenhouse or polytunnel (near the doorso bees will find and pollinate them) or outdoors.Sow one seed to an 8cm (3in) pot. The variety'Aquadulce Claudia’ is reliable.Early-pull carrots 'Amsterdam Forcing’ and'Early Nantes’ do well from late-winter sowings ina 30cm (12in) pot. By spring you’ll have tenderyoung roots to pull.

YEAR-ROUND SCHEDULEWinter Bring pot-grown Strawberries into the greenhouse in January (they flower and fruit best afterbeing frosted). Remove dead leaves and repot in freshpeat-free compost. You are their pollinator: dust pollenbetween the flowers with a small brush, then enjoythe rewards from early May.Spring It’s all systems sow as your greenhouse captures increasing amounts of sunshine. Slugs willthrive in ever-wetter summers, so start plants in potsor multi-celled trays to give them a head start whenplanted outdoors, aided by some organic slug pellets. Summer Make the most of warmth-loving crops.Indoor Tomatoes (opt for the blight resistant varieties),Peppers, Aubergines, Cucumbers and Melons allneed the raised temperatures of a greenhouse to succeed.Autumn Use the warm, rain-free space of yourgreenhouse to store/ripen onions. Pumpkins andWinter Squashes. Lay trays in full sun so skins bakeand ripen fully. Bring in a few spring flowering shrubssuch as Viburnum bodnantense, Daphne odora‘Aureomarginata’, Forsythia or pot up some springbulbs, such as Crocus, to force into early flower forthe house.
