    Buckingham countyat a Glance

    Location/TopographyLocated in Central Virginia, Buckingham County is 63

    miles west of Richmond, 45 miles south of Charlottesville and 38 miles northeast of Lynchburg. Washington, D.C. is about 3 hours away.

    Buckingham is bounded by the James River on the north and northwest and the Appomattox River on the south.

    ClimateThe climate here is a relatively moderate one, with an

    average annual temperature of 57 degrees, an average January temperature of 36.7, and average July tempera-ture of 77.2, and an average annual rainfall of 45 inches.

    Labor Force Buckingham County has a civilian labor force of

    about 6,000. Manufacturing takes up about one-third of the total employment.

    Population There were about 17,146 residents in Buckingham

    County according to the 2010 Census, about 10% more than the 2000 Census of 15,600 residents.

    Natural Resources Buckingham County is heavily forested with 299,235

    acres of woodland, or more than 80% of the countys total land area. The dominant forest types are oak-hickory and loblolly-shortleaf pine.

    Local Economy Manufacturing activity is concentrated in mining and

    wood-related enterprises, and a full range of commercial services is available locally.

    Major Employers The three largest employers in Buckingham Coun-

    ty are the Buckingham Correctional Center, the Dillwyn Correctional Center and Kyanite Mining. Other large em-ployers include LeSueur-Richmond Slate, Buckingham

    County Government, Home Health Services, Farmers Foods, Central Virginia Community Health Center, Food Lion, VDOT, Pierce Johnson Lumber, Solite Corp., Buffa-lo Wood Products, Seay Milling, Bank of America, Hi-Test Labs, Heritage Nursing Home, New Dominion School, BB & T Bank, Llewellyn Brothers Lumber, Farmers Bank, Gilliam Motors, Buckingham Branch Railroad, Anderson Tire and Towing, and Parker Oil Co.

    Public Education According to recent figures, there are four elemen-

    tary schools with a total of about 923 students and 84 teachers, one new middle school with about 445 students and 41 teachers, and one high school with about 700 stu-dents and 49 teachers.

    Higher Education The Southside Community College in Keysville (45

    mi. south) offers a wide range of technical and liberal arts programs, as does Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville. Longwood University in Farmville (25 mi. south) is a four-year state school with majors in about

    30 fields. Hampton-Sydney College (29 mi.) is a private mens school with a liberal arts program and pre-medical and pre-law programs. There are also numerous colleges and universities nearby in Charlottesville and Richmond, including U.V.A. and U.R.

    Recreation Buckingham-Appomattox State Forest, with its

    19,687 acres, offers outdoor recreation to local residents. Holliday Lake State Park is located within the state forest and offers camping, picnicking, swimming, boating and hiking within the parks boundaries. For more information, call (434) 248-6308.

    James River State Park, with 1500 acres along the James River, offers picnicking, primitive camping, RV camping with a bathhouse, 17 cabins, nearly 17 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and three miles of river frontage with two boat ramps. In addition, the park offers wheelchair accessible facilities including a 1/4 mile paved and boardwalk trail around one of three fishing ponds. The Tye River overlook trail is handicap accessible.

    James River State Park is located in the western tip of the county, across the river from Nelson County.
