Lush green fairways, soft white sand traps and beautifully crisp land- scaping await as Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club recently re- opened after a summer-long grounds renovation project. Beginning late last spring, the renovations included replac- ing the greens with Champion Bermuda grass, an ultra-fine variety of grass that presents better consistency and gives better putting speeds, level- ing all of the tees, changing out the roughs and outer greens with Celebration Bermuda grass, re-doing the practice area and fixing the on course bathrooms, coolers and sig- nage. The fourth hole, which according to General Manager Randy O'Linger is the club's signature hole, was also ren- ovated. Bright white sands now line the bunkers and the goosegrass and other weeds have been carefully removed to allow the new turf to grow in. Opening on Labor Day in 1968, Buckhorn has been the favorite of many loyal members, includ- ing the club's owner, William H. Harper, who was a member of the club back when it first opened and was later the club president. With more than 300 members strong, the club does not lack for devotees. To prove that point, their dedication to the club was made evident when several were seen weed- ing goosegrass on the fairways during a particularly warm September morn- ing. Using large metal weeding tools, the group painstakingly scoured the turf for the troublesome weed and pulled them up, some by hand, into large grassy piles. "They wanted to do something for the club," explained Harper. "They volunteered for it. They love this place also."
