“Seeing a Eurasian Eagle Owl for the first time left me awestruck. They are among the largest of all owls in the world but what captured my attention were those large, pumpkin-colored eyes. Depending on the part of Europe, they range from a species of least concern in some areas to an endangered species

in others. During the 1900’s, Eurasian Eagle Owl populations declined drastically when humans hunted and poisoned them. With increased protection by local governments and reintroduction in some areas, these owls are slowly making a come-back.” Anne Peyton is a Signature member of Artists for Conservation and resides in Arizona, USA. INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITOF NATURE IN ART

Exclusive to the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival in Ontario

Welcome to the 38th Buckhorn Fine Art Festival! The theme

of this year’s festival is “Our Natural Heritage”. The intent is to celebrate our connection to nature, at the same time as raising awareness about the fragility of it. In addition to the special exhibit featuring Artists for Conservation, we are welcoming a variety of organizations whose mandates are consistent with this theme. We are also pleased to host a group exhibition by the Academy of Realist Art. More details about these special guests can be found on page 6 and 7 of this book. If you haven’t made it to our annual Opening Night Garden Party yet, this is a great year to plan to attend. Enjoy the magic of an “artful” summer’s evening in our beautiful Festival Park. Your Garden Party ticket also entitles you to return for Saturday and Sunday of Festival weekend at no additional charge. Throughout the weekend, watch for artist’s demonstrations and presentations, a variety of live

entertainment and great food – there’s a lot to see and do each day. Check the schedule on page 4 of this book. The family ARTivity Zone provides a variety of interactive art activities for budding artists of all ages. Open Saturday and Sunday at the Buckhorn Sports Complex adjacent to the Community Centre, the “A-Zone” features a “tour of studios” where one can explore different mediums and projects: some large, some small, some self-directed, others with guidance. All are welcome to let their inner artist have some fun... Explore, experience and express your creativity! Months of planning and hours of hard work go into this weekend-long event and thanks to the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, the BFAF runs like a well-oiled machine. You can easily spot our volunteers: they are the ones wearing the bright green lanyards. They are here to help you, and are ever so friendly! While you’re in the area, be sure to stop and admire the mural near the

Kawartha Land TrustKawartha Land Trust is a non-governmental organization and a registered charity dedicated to acquiring land and interests in land and maintaining it in a natural state. More than twenty significant natural sites, along with the life they support, are currently preserved under KLT. Kawartha Turtle Trauma CentreSeven of the eight species of turtles in Ontario are listed as at-risk. Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre is dedicated to conserving our remaining turtle populations and the wetlands in which they live. This is achieved by operating a one-of-a-kind turtle hospital to treat, rehabilitate and release injured turtles, completing research and conservation work in the field, and working to educate others about the importance of turtles and our wetland ecosystems. Drop by the outdoor display in Festival Park (Saturday only) and visit www.kawarthaturtle.org for more information.

Ontario Federation of Anglers and HuntersWith more than 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters and 725 member clubs, the OFAH is the largest non-profit fish and wildlife conservation-based organization in Ontario.
