The Buck Creek Festival is 12 years old this year. Ron Holly, aka Major Dundee, has been around since the beginning.

Something of an icon in Helena, as past owner of downtown Helena’s Major Dundee’s 1890’s Mercantile, Holly is in charge of securing vendors for the event, laying out the park design and firing the cannon to begin the much-loved rubber duck race. He likens his work to “putting a circus in my living room,” but is quick to admit he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Holly said the event is strictly volunteer driven.

“This is really a celebration of Helena,” he said. “We’re all proud of our city and what it means to us. It’s

our way of giving back to a place we love.”

And, give back they do to the tune of approximately $172,000 over the past 11 years. Safehouse, a Shelby County shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, receives the proceeds from the rubber duck race. That event alone has raised some $90,000 for Safehouse since the agency came on board ten years ago. Other benefactors include local schools, police and fire departments, the Helena library and the Helena Middle School Band.

For 2013, organizers have signed up 10 bands, over 100 vendors and dozens of children’s activities, including a chance to meet “live” comic book characters. Musical entertainment runs

the gamut from rock’n’roll, country, blues and jazz.

Though no alcohol is allowed in the park Holly said they do have an adult beverage booth, and tips collected there are returned to the park.

As organizers put the finishing touches on this year’s event, Holly looks ahead.

“We’ll get about two months off right after we shut down Saturday night, then begin planning for next year. We’re just a bedroom community. We don’t have the large chain stores like other places. Our sponsors come from our city. They’re the ones –along with the best group of volunteers I know — who make this festival a success. We don’t do it for fame and we sure don’t do it for money, but just for the love of the city.”

Sounds kind of crazy. Two thousand rubber ducks barreling down Buck Creek toward a finish line. Yep. The same kind of rubber duck you might play with in the bath tub. Yours may seem peaceful enough but get a few together and turns out they are fierce competitors, indeed.

Six-year-old Liam Powell, knows first hand how competitive those racing rubber ducks can be. Liam was last year’s third place winner in the duck race, which has earned Shelby County nonprofit Safehouse approximately $90,000 since the organization began participating about nine years ago.

“I thought my duck won first place. Then I thought she won second place. Then I found out she won third. It was the last place but it was a good place,” he said. “I won a t-shirt. Oh, yeah, mama just said I also won $100 dollars … but the T-shirt was better.”

Valencia Albright, volunteer coordi-nator with Safehouse, a Shelby County shelter for victims of domestic abuse, is almost as excited about the duck race as Liam.

“This has been a wonderful event for us,” she said.

Though the Buck Creek Festival sponsors the race, it is Safehouse that sells the ducks-$5 for one duck; $25 for a flock of 5, plus a festival T-shirt.

Albright is always at the finish line to greet the first three ducks and to pres-ent checks of $500, $250 and $100 to first, second and third place winners.

“These can be some pretty profit-able ducks,” she said.

Each person who buys a duck is given a number that corresponds to the number on his or her duck. At the designated time, some 2,000 ducks get dumped over the waterfall and begin their race toward the finish line.

The duck wranglers are a huge component of this event. This year’s race includes one celebrity wrangler, Helena Mayor Mark Hall.

The wranglers’ job is to toss the competing ducks over the waterfall.


Down below, more wranglers, knee deep in water, maneu-ver the ducks between the barricades that form the racing channel.

“One year we had some wranglers let about 200 ducks get past the barricades,” said Ron Holly, who fires an official Civil War cannon to start the race.

“Last time we saw those ducks they were headed down-stream, loose and on their own. They’re probably already to Cuba by now.”

The race is expected to begin at 3 p.m. Ducks can be purchased at The Depot and Deli Grill in Helena, Regions Bank or by calling the SafeHouse office at 205-269-1877. Tickets will also be available at the event until just before the race begins.

Liam is hoping for another win at this year’s duck race. “You bet I’m going to be there again with my duck,” he

said. “Maybe this time she’ll come in first place.”
