Aldermenwant tohear ideas for former churchBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

BATAVIA – Aldermenwant to know what ideas de-velopers have for the formerFirst Baptist Church buildingin downtown Batavia.

Aldermen at the BataviaCity Council meeting Aug. 19approved a staff recommen-dation that the city issue arequest for qualifications forpotential purchasers, and that

the purchasers be given the op-tion to maintain or demolishthe entire facility.

“We need to see what themarket will bear,” 7th WardAlderman Dave Brown. “Wewould like to get it back on thetax rolls.”

A Northbrook-based firm,WJE, has estimated it willcost at least $3.1 million to re-pair the former First BaptistChurch building at the cornerof Washington and Wilson

streets in downtown Bataviaso the building can be reused.

Brown noted the city orig-inally bought the propertyto assist in a state project tostraighten out the S-curve atthe intersection. That projectturned out not to be feasibleand has been scrapped, hesaid.

“We now have a piece ofproperty we hope to see devel-oped,” Brown said.

The city has owned the fa-

cility since 2006, includingthe late 19th-century originalchurch, a north addition builtin the 1930s and a classroomwing built around 1959. TheBatavia City Council hadhired WJE to assess the build-ing’s condition.

The firm has inspected thebuilding, and recommendedrepairs be made to the exte-rior and interior of the 1889church, 1930s addition and1959 classroom wing, as well

as the building’s mechanicalsystems.

The firm recommended thecity budget between $3.1 mil-lion and $3.5 million for thework.

WJE listed an estimated$775,000 in repairs to preventadditional damage to thebuilding materials or features.

Batavia -based Alpine Dem-olition Services has submittedan estimate of $146,250 to de-molish the property.

Area rich in recreation for individuals with disabilitiesBy KARI MILLER

[email protected]

“Aerodynamically, thebumblebee shouldn’t be ableto fly, but the bumblebeedoesn’t know that so it goeson flying any-way.”

How rightMary KayAsh was whenshe utteredthose words. Itreminded meof the SpecialOlympicsathletes I coached for twoyears through the Fox ValleySpecial Recreation Associa-tion. So often they live theirlives without fear or withoutknowing their own limita-tions. They approach everyday as a new day and takesuch joy in the things theydo. They are a true inspira-tion.

The FVSRA providesyear-round recreational op-portunities to residents withdisabilities. The BataviaPark District is one of sevenmember agencies and makesup about 10 percent of theparticipants. Partnershipswith those agencies are keyto the FVSRA’s success, andBatavia is honored to playsuch a large part of that.

“I can’t say enough aboutthe fantastic experiences ourstaff has had working withthe Batavia Park District,”said Sandy Blondin, super-intendent of recreation forthe FVSRA. “It’s truly afamily approach to makingsure participants have agreat experience. Bataviahas set the bar high, and ourpartnership has been very

positive.”Every year, the FVSRA

serves about 6,500 individu-als with disabilities. Fromspecial events and SpecialOlympics sports to summerday camp and trips, it trulyprovides something for ev-eryone.

“The programs we offergive everyone the opportu-nity to be appreciated andaccepted, regardless of theirabilities,” Blondin said. “Weprovide a lifetime of leisureopportunities for partic-ipants – from the toddlerlearning to swim, to the teen

in Special Olympics sports,to the senior who partic-ipates in bingo night. Wewant to make sure they’rehaving the best positive rec-reation and leisure experi-ence we can.”

Through the partnershipwith the FVSRA, the BataviaPark District can provideinclusion services to parkdistrict participants. Inclu-sion is the process of takinga person who has a disabilityand including him or herinto a typical recreation pro-gram with varying levels ofassistance. This can include

making changes to the pro-gram or providing accessibleequipment to put everyoneon an equal playing field.Nearly 2,500 inclusion hoursare devoted to Batavia par-ticipants annually.

Blondin shared with methe story of a young girlfrom Batavia who partici-pated in a ski trip offeredthrough the FVSRA. Thegroup traveled to Brecken-ridge, Colo., for the trip.

“She was nervous becauseshe had never been skiing, but after some one-on-oneinstruction, she became

more confident,” Blondinsaid. “By the end of the trip, she was able to go downthe hill without assistance. That was an experience shenever would’ve been able tohave had if not been for ourpartnership with the BataviaPark District.”

My experience volunteer-ing for the FVSRA was in-credibly rewarding. I wouldventure to say the athletestaught me more in thosetwo years than I was able toteach them, which is typical,Blondin said.

“Volunteering promotesa greater understanding andoverall acceptance of indi-viduals with disabilities,”she said. “It has such a posi-tive impact on the volunteer, while promoting greatercompassion and respect forothers.”

Blondin’s passion for herjob and the participants shehas instructed is obviousto anyone who meets her. After being in charge of theFVSRA’s popular summerday camp program, she waspromoted to superintendentof recreation. She holds adegree in therapeutic rec-reation from Illinois StateUniversity.

There is a persistent misconception that re-liance on prescription lenses causes the eyesto become weak and lazy based on the mis-taken belief that glasses and contact lensesdo the work of the eyes. However, the factis that corrective lenses merely compensatefor structural defects, such as an improperlyshaped eyeball or an excessively stiff lens, that prevent the eye from focusing clearly de-spite the best efforts of the lens muscles. Bywearing corrective lenses, the wearer relievesthese muscles from being tense or relaxed(depending on whether the condition to becorrected is farsightedness or nearsighted-ness) more often than they have to. Instead, corrective lenses enable them to work as hardas the muscles in a normal eye. P.S. Eyeglasslenses only change the light rays that the eyereceives and not any part of the eye itself.

ST. CHARLES – It’s hard forMatt Keen to describe his musicsimply as one genre.

Keen, 23, of St. Charles, saidhe’s written reggae, rock, gospel, folk rock, rhythm and blues, rapand country songs since he start-ed playing music at age 10.

“I’m a singer first and fore-most,” he said. “ ... I spent a yearin a gospel choir in Chicago.”

His musical influences arejust as diverse as the spectrumof genres he plays. They includeBen Harper, The Doors, FrankSinatra, Dr. John and Beetho-ven.

“I pride myself in that. if Ihear a song, I like to know who’splaying it,” he said.

Keen recently took home a$2,000 prize after winning theCladdagh’s Got Talent competi-tion at Claddagh Irish Pub in Ge-neva, and he’s scheduled to per-form at upcoming local shows.

Andrea Lay, manager atCladdagh Iris Pub in Geneva, said about 60 area performersparticipated in the eight-weekcontest, and the winner was an-nounced earlier this month.

“[The judges] loved him,” shesaid. “He did original songs; hedid cover songs; and he had a lotmore passion doing it. That waskind of one of the things theytruly appreciated.”

Keen is no stranger to talentcompetitions. He was a contes-tant on NBC’s “America’s GotTalent” show in the fifth sea-son, which aired in 2010. He wasamong about 100 acts to advanceto Las Vegas for a performance, although he didn’t take home

the grand prize. He said his music is about in-

spiring people to feel something.“My focus is on the audience,

but it’s not about impressingthem,” he said, “but it’s about

taking them with me.”He said he likes the concept

of everyone in the audience be-ing in the same moment whenhe performs.

That’s harder to do in the agewhere cellphones, social mediaand the Internet constantly areat everyone’s fingertips, he said.He noted that it’s easy, especial-ly for the current generation, tobe taken out of the moment be-cause they’re more apt to reachfor their cellphones to snap aphoto or update a Facebook sta-

tus.“My mom turned me onto the

idea of mental pictures,” he said.Keen said he often plays

hourslong sets without taking abreak. Sometimes he performswith his band – a drummer anda bass player – and said he haswritten more than 500 songs.

“I have seven albums on mycomputer ready to be recorded,”he said.

He said his lyrics give hissongs a “tense” feel, though themelody might be upbeat. He said

he’s inspired by the macabreand death, but also writes aboutpeople he knows and tries tokeep the lyrics simple.

“You don’t have to way over-write,” he said. “You’re nevergoing to connect that way.”

Keen has two upcoming localperformances scheduled. Thefirst is at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept.5, at EvenFlow Music & Spirits,302 W. State St., Geneva, andthe second is at 7 p.m. Saturday,Sept. 7, at Claddagh Irish Pub,1702 Commons Drive, Geneva.

17Nashville-based HarpethRising coming to Geneva

By ERIC [email protected]

Their latest album debutedin the Top 10 on the Interna-tional Folk Charts.

Nashville-based HarpethRising is just one of the actsthat will perform Sunday,Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2,at the Folk Valley Music andStorytelling Festival at IslandPark in Geneva.

Information about the fes-tival is available by visitingwww.foxvalleyfolk.com.

Kane County Chroniclereporter Eric Schelkopf hadthe chance to talk to violin-ist and co-founder JordanaGreenberg about the band andits activities.

Eric Schelkopf: Do you preferbeing part of festivals like thisrather than playing on your own?

Jordana Greenberg: One ofthe things we love about play-ing festivals is getting to hearall of the other musicians. Before we were full-time per-forming musicians, we spenta good amount of our timegoing to music festivals.

It was one of my favoritethings and still is, but I just doit in a slightly different capac-ity now. As a performer, I goand do my performance, andthen after that, I get to becomea spectator. And they’re equal-ly as much fun.

ES: I understand the bandformed after you and banjoplayer Rebecca Reed-Lunn took across-country spiritual quest.

JG: All four of us went to In-diana University in Blooming-ton, and we all have classicalperformance degrees. Wedecided that we really wantedto start writing our ownmusic, and that happened tocome out basically as folk mu-sic as a result of our differentinfluences and passions andupbringing.

That’s what sort of camenaturally to us.

ES: And I understand the bandkind of formed after you startedperforming with Rebecca acrossthe United States.

JG: Yeah, the two of us justkind of took off on a road tripand started busking and goingto music festivals.

And then we headed toHawaii and ended up picking[up] a whole bunch of regulargigs there. So, we stayed for ayear in Hawaii, playing aboutfive times a week.

We started writing songsand began figuring out whatwe wanted to sound like.

ES: On your latest CD, “TheEnd of the World,” you are col-laborating with your dad, DavidGreenberg.

JG: He’s a really amazingsinger/songwriter. He’s beenwriting since he was a kid.

I have memories of hearinghim write songs and thenplaying them for me. Andthen it sort of seemed imper-ative to me when we startedperforming that we do some ofhis stuff.

We loved it, and our fansloved it. So, we decided tomake an album of songs by

him.ES: Your playing style is rath-

er unique. You kind of developedyour own style.

JG: I think we all have in asense, because of our classi-cal training. I get asked a lotwhether I am a violinist or afiddler. The answer, I think, totally depends on what songwe’re playing.

I haven’t studied bluegrassfiddling in the same way thatI’ve classical music. So, I tendto be a little more comfortablein a slightly more classicalstyle, but I incorporate a lotof techniques from modernfiddling playing.

If we’re doing a song thatrequires sort of more rock-type feel to it, I’ll even dothings that end up soundingsort of like an electric guitar. So, you sort of develop accord-ing to what the song needs.

Many runners in the 13.1mile race, won by Lars Juhl ofChicago, used the race to getready for marathons in Octo-ber, said race director DannyDelgado.

“This race has built a rep-utation as a great warm upfor Chicago and Milwaukeemarathons,” Delgado said.“We have runners from 10 dif-ferent states and all over theChicagoland area.”

Runners took a slightly dif-ferent course than in the pastfew years to avoid blockingMain Street.

“The course got faster,”Delgado said. “We eliminatedthe hill up Houston [Street]and the last two-and-a-halfmiles are all downhill”

Surprisingly, results werehigher. Juls, who took thirdin 2010, crossed the finish linein 1 hour, 14 minutes and .06 ofa second, 4:30 off of last year’stop time of 1:09:36.

Joshua Stein of Forest Parkcame in second at 1:15:37, andBolingbrook’s Nathan Kenne-dy time of 1:17:08 earned himthird place.

Amanda Hooper took tophonors among the femalerunners. The Carpentersvilleresident finished in 1:25:44, aminute and half slower thanthe best female time in 2012.

Geneva’s Elena Shemy-akina took second in 1:26:17.Third place went to AshleyMolidor of Downer Grove, who finished in 1:26:41.

“It’s my personal best soI’m happy with it,” said She-myakina, who estimated thatshe has run in 25 half mara-thons and 34 full ones. “It’spretty good when you get [apersonal record] at 54.”

The average time for the1,131 runners who crossed the

finish line was 2:04:51.Oliver Bohac, 10, of Bata-

via, the race’s youngest run-ner, finished in 2:19:54 to earnfourth place in the males 19and younger division. It washis third half marathon.

“My time was a very bigimprovement over the firsttwo,” the fifth-grader said.

Chuck Amenta of Genevasaid the race was a great tune-up for a marathon.

“A bunch of my triathlonfriends use this race as a longtraining run for the mara-thons,” said Amenta as hecheered his friends on fromChurch Street.

This year’s half marathonis the fifth time Peapod, anonline grocery delivery ser-vice headquartered in Skokie, sponsored the event.

“Peapod is a local companyso we wanted to be part of thecommunity,” Peapod spokes-man Brad Porter said. “This agood venue to become part ofthe community so that is whyhave sponsored it.”

“This race has built a

reputation as a great

warm up for Chicago and

Milwaukee marathons.

We have runners from 10

The ocean: It’s deep, dark, mysterious andilled with life. Creatures of the sea varygreatly ?— from some of the smallest organ-

isms on Earth to some of the biggest — and rangefrom the truly harmless to the seriously dangerous.Below, you will see a description of the wild and

weird animals from the ocean’s depths. Can youmatch the correct name and drawing of each realanimal to each description?— Anne Raih, More Content Now

Creatures

of the sea

2: I look to be part octopusand part squid, with eight redand brown tentacles and asquid-like body. I am knownfor living my life in the darkdepths of the ocean, andbecause of that, I have verylarge eyes: The largest eyescompared to body size, infact, of any known animalin the world. Although I ama carnivore, I don’t want tosuck your blood. What am I?

3: I’m rarely seen by hu-mans because I live in thedeepest, darkest corners ofthe ocean. Some scientistsrefer to me as a living fossil, because I am very similar tomy prehistoric ancestors.I look like a giant eel, but Ihave many rows of teeth, like a shark. What am I?

4: Some say I am theunicorn of the sea: I am aporpoise, but with a veryspecial gift — a large tuskthat sticks out from thetop of my head. Scientistsaren’t sure what the tuskis for, but they know that itmakes me unique and beau-tiful in the cold waters of theArctic. What am I?

1: I’m pretty scary-looking —you can tell where I get myname from taking one lookat the long, sharp fangs thatburst out of mymouth. I usethese teeth to catch smallerfish that swim by me, andI live in the depths of theocean. What am I?

5: If you see my pretty clearbubble floating over thesurface toward you whileyou are swimming, it’s timeto head in to shore. Belowwater, I have long tentaclesthat unleash a nasty, venom-ous sting. I am the ultimatetrickster: I am not one ani-mal, but a group of organ-isms that lives, works andfloats together. What am I?
