BTCV Kids
We launched our “BTCV Kids” program at our inception to help make dreams come true for students that attend BTCV Schools around the world. This program funds educational needs for dedicated students so that they can pursue their dreams to the highest academic levels possible. BTCV Kids must maintain high attendance and passing marks in all classes, and send progress reports to BTCV each term. They must also Be The Change in their communities by serving in the field of their chosen training for at least 3 years after completing their education.
We continue to increase our support for our BTCV Kids. We are currently funding a total of 16 young scholars, 7 girls and 9 boys, at an average cost of $750 per student per year. Please consider donating to the BTCV Kids fund to help these students succeed!

IMPORTANT FAQsHOW DOES A BTCV BUILD HAPPEN?
We find communities-in-need (anywhere in the world), or they find us, through
word of mouth, our website, presentations at events, media outlets, or other
strange-but-true connections. The community then applies for BTCV support by:
1. Demonstrating their Need - Describe why the educational facility is
needed and how it will benefit the community.
2. Documenting Community Involvement - Provide specifics regarding
how the community will be involved in the work and engaged in maintenance
of the facility, support of the staff, and development of the students.
3. Ensuring Sustainability - Outline a plan for keeping the educational facility
functioning for its intended purpose long term.
When the application is approved, we then begin fundraising for the project, build
a team of 10-20 volunteers, and work out all the logistics over a 6-12 month
period in preparation for the trip. Then we GO and BE THE CHANGE!
HOW DOES BTCV FOLLOW-UP ON THE SCHOOLS?
As part of our long term relationship with each community, BTCV receives annual
reports on each educational facility with respect to enrollment, curriculum,
staffing, and facilities. In addition to the statistics provided to BTCV, these reports
allow us to determine what the ongoing needs are for each community and
determine how they can be met. Our BTCV Kids are another important avenue
of follow-up as we receive regular reports from them regarding the community,
the educational facilities, and their own progress in education and life.
Donate to BTCV and you will help change the world through the power of education! Be The Change!!

BTCV StoriesBTCV Kid Phomotso’s SUCCESS!It was not easy getting back to school in June as everyone was making fun of me that I failed in America including some teachers, but a few of them encouraged and believed in me. I never wanted to think about it, but to focus and go on. Everywhere there was talks in the streets about me not passing matric (grade 12). I always believe what people say. I know that's dangerous but I still do sometimes. I just wanna tell you that as I am typing this now tears won't stop running down - I received a call from my brother that I am in the newspapers. I MADE IT!!! I PASSED MATRIC!!! They list those who passed in newspapers around the country. I am on the list! I am really thankful to God for giving me BTCV, CIS and all the people in America who helped me!! Thank you very much for your support and prayers. Thank you all!!
Kasye’s BTCV Christmas CardIn August, I chaperoned five juniors from CIS on a mission with Be The Change Volunteers to build a school in India for disabled orphans. Our group spent 9 months raising funds to make the trip possible. When we landed in Trivandrum, India, we still had no idea what was in store for us. We spent 10 days working at the Karunya Special School to finish a building that was started for them nearly 10 years ago – and left unfinished due to lack of funding. Our support and labor provided a roof, walls, a vocational center, solar power and a washer and dryer to the school. Our love for the children answered the prayers of many and left smiles on the faces of those beautiful children who had been abandoned by a society where many consider them outcasts. This Christmas, CIS students are remembering the orphans by donating the gifts they would be receiving to the children back in Ayur. Despite hardships in my personal life, I can honestly say that I am in a better place today than I have been in a long time, and I owe my resilience, in part, to India and BTCV. I am thrilled to be able to share my story with you and I hope this finds you and your family well. Merry Christmas! Love, Kasye
Megan’s BTCV Thank You NoteMy heart has been full of gratitude ever since I received my first donation several months ago. Sitting in a little restaurant on the first night our team was in Malawi I was struck by the fact that I was actually in Africa! “How in the world did I get here?” I wondered. God provided a way for me to go to Africa and fulfill a long wished for dream through all of your donations and prayers. The first day we went to the school the kids were all there. As soon as we pulled up all jam packed into our van, we were swarmed by kids all wearing the hugest grins you have ever seen. They all greeted us, teaching us their handshakes and laughing as we tried to keep up. Once again in this swarm of happy kids I was hit, “how in the world did I get here?” Over the 2 week period we were at the school in a little village called Sankhani we began to get to know each other (people from totally different worlds – in so many ways) - through games, Chichewa lessons (their native language), English lessons, bracelet making, hair braiding, coloring, and just sharing our love. My favorite part was learning the story of a boy named Daniel. I don’t even know where to begin with his story! His is in standard 3, the equivalent to a senior in high school. In order to graduate they have to take a test and score high enough. The first time he took the test he failed because he had missed so much school from being too sick and weak to go. He has struggled with malaria for years. His health is one of his biggest struggles in life. The next time he was ready to take the test the principal made a mistake and did not submit Daniel’s name due to a filing error. So once again he couldn’t graduate. Now he has to wait until 2013. Is he quitting or giving up? No way. This boy has dreams, passion, and faith in the Lord and his plan. Daniel has dreams to go to college and become a lawyer. He is a huge inspiration to me, through his faith and determination to reach his dream. This trip has changed my life. Not one day has passed since we have been back that I haven’t thought about the villagers in Makalani village and the children and teachers at the school. I would never have been able to fulfill my dream of going to Africa without every single one of you. This will not be my last journey to Makalani Village or my last mission trip. Thank you all SO much, I don’t feel like I can even put into words how grateful I truly am to each and every one of you.

BTCV Giants“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”
This quote from Sir Isaac Newton certainly applies to BTCV! This organization has been so blessed to be able to change the lives of so many people through the power of education! Our work has only been possible through the GENEROUS and AMAZING support of so many people in so many different ways. We want to recognize and sincerely thank “our giants” who have made our success possible – THANK YOU for letting us see, and reach, further than we could ever dream!
BTCV Giants Margaret Bisognot – Mother of Dominique (BTCV co-founder and director), Mary-Lourdes (BTCV Cambodia), and Manny Bisogno (BTCV Cambodia and Nepal) who have all contributed so significantly to BTCV, she obviously instilled in her amazing children the passion for service and love for the poor, downtrodden, and oppressed. BTCV School 002, The Floating Learning Center in Cambodia, is dedicated to her life and memory. (tin memoriam)
Grace Anderson – Mother of BTCV co-founder and director Brian Anderson, raised her son to live a life of servant leadership which he has excelled at for more than 20 years. BTCV would not be here without Brian, and so, would not be here without Grace. In addition, Grace is a core donor, supporter, and dear friend to all of us at BTCV.
Jane Gordon Cook – Mother of BTCV co-founder and director Jimi Cook, Jane has been a major donor and supporter of BTCV since our inception – she has given so generously to our mission and has sponsored several of our volunteers to go and serve with us. She is also our best cheerleader and encourager and keeps us all going strong with her love and support.
Martin Petrus – Martin is our “man on the front lines” – this amazing man worked with us to build BTCV School 004, Brikiti Elementary School in PNG, and immediately established the first BTCV affiliate (PNG), has already started the first locally-generated BTCV School (007 Kulangit Elementary), and has plans for many more BTCV schools throughout all of Papua New Guinea!
Glenn & Doug Willett – BTCV volunteers extraordinaire! This Father-Son team participated on BTCV Rwanda, PNG, and Nepal builds, are already signed up for Sri Lanka, and plan on many many more. Glenn (at 80+ years old) and Doug are the hardest working, most outgoing, most loved (by us, their teammates, the communities, and especially the kids) volunteers ever – they are both just beautiful people who breathe BTCV!

BTCV Board of DirectorsShari Hamilton(Associate Research Veterinarian, University of Missouri)I’m “connected” to BTCV because I’m “connected” to Jimi and Cris5 Cook. I believe in a world where there is peace and happiness and where every child has the opportunity for a solid educa5on and future. I o?en live vicariously through Jimi and Cris5’s many adventures and I hope my family and I can one day join a team build. I am proud to be a member of the board and support this amazing organiza5on.
Mar<n Petrus(Founder/Director, Gudpela Sindaun Consultancy)I come from New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea, and am the founder and director of Gudpela Sindaun Consultancy -‐ a rural development consultancy group in Papua New Guinea. Gudpela Sindaun Consultancy works in partnership with rural local leadership to advocate and promote rural development ini5a5ves at the grassroots level. We formed an official affilia5on with BTCV in 2009.
Tom Treece(Re<red)Recently re5red from 42-‐year career with Liberty Mutual, I have been involved in suppor5ng and working at BTCV's adopted Tanzania school, Upendo Encourage School in Tengeru. I was a team member on BTCV’s South Africa build in April 2010, Sri Lanka build in August 2011 and am leading the Tanzania build in June 2012.
Greg Jones(AHorney, Partner, Jones & Watkins, LLC)I believe strongly in the importance of every child—domes5c and abroad—having an opportunity to obtain a basic educa5on. And, as a former employee of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, I saw firsthand that whatever Jimi and Cris5 Cook set out to do, nothing would prevent them from succeeding. When they contacted me about forming a not-‐for-‐profit organiza5on that would focus on educa5ng children in the world’s most impoverished communi5es, I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to help them be successful.
Brooks Stevens(Execu<ve Sales Rep, Liberty Mutual Group)I stared my Global volunteering experience, many thanks to Brian Anderson, with The Habitat for Humanity Global Village program with builds in Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya. I realized that my favorite part of my experiences was the interac5on with children and saw firsthand their need for quality schools and educa5on. Thus, following Brian, my new global volunteering passion is BTCV. I was on the Cambodia Floa5ng Learning Center build and look forward to many more. I live in Seacoast NH and am a career sales agent for Liberty Mutual Insurance. I look forward to serving on the board.

BTCV ANNUAL REPORT 503 E NIFONG #230 COLUMBIA, MO 65201-3717 2011
BTCV Board of DirectorsMark Albrecht(Veterinarian, Owner, Montana Veterinary Surgical Services)My involvement with BTCV really dates back 19 years to when I first met Jimi and Cris5. Through shared professional interests we remained in close contact so when they first started talking about BTCV I was interested. My first BTCV “buy in” was a dona5on to the Floa5ng Learning Center build in Cambodia, and since, I have been fortunate to be a team member on PNG 003 and Nepal 006. I find it to be a wonderful experience and took my son along for the Nepal build. It is truly fulfilling to help make a posi5ve difference in the world by “Being the Change...” It is an honor to help serve as a board member -‐ I am humbled by the offer and opportunity.
Glenn WilleH(Re<red, Columbus, OH)My career has included 34 years with IBM in office products sales, 4 years as co-‐owner of a courier business, and 8+ years as a residen5al land developer. It is in indeed an honor to serve as a member of the BTCV board. I'm excited about the opportunity to help wherever possible the organiza5on with whom I've had such great experiences. My son, Doug and I have done BTCV builds in Rwanda, PNG, Nepal, and Malawi. I've done overseas volunteer trips with several organiza5ons, but none has given me the sense of accomplishment that these have. What beger purpose could you serve than to make the gi? of educa5on available to kids in remote areas of the world; giving them a basis from which they can grow, be produc5ve, develop their God-‐given talents, and help keep them off the streets. I'm a BELIEVER! Educa5on IS the primary focus of BTCV. You also have to be impressed with the passion and goals of its founders -‐ 100 Schools!!! Jane McBride(Founder, Friends of Thai Daughters)I first learned of the horrors of child sex trafficking in 2002 and realized that keeping girls in school is a key factor in preven5ng exploita5on. Our mission at Friends of Thai Daughters has been to provide at-‐risk girls with safe shelter and access to educa5on. Combining efforts with BTCV to build schools is a wonderful way to con5nue and expand our efforts in making the world a beger place for kids with no other alterna5ves.
Brian Van Vechten(Veterinary Surgeon, Owner, Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado)A?er veterinary school, a residency, and fellowship in surgical oncology, I have been a surgeon and partner at Veterinary Surgical Service, a part of the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado (VRCC). My wife Liz and I were part of BTCV Team South Africa 004 and got hooked. We were on BTCV Team Sri Lanka 010 this year and plan on many more.
