INTRODUCTIONMetsä Board Sverige AB planned to

substantially enhance and expand

board production at its Husum Mill

in Sweden. Expanding the harbour

was also part of the plan to boost

production at the Husum Mill.

A new 139-metre section of re-

taining quay wall was built at the harbour by Terramare Oy.

Works included the new lo-lo quay and harbour fi eld with ac-

cessory fi ttings.

The project was started in July 2015 with mobilising the site

and starting to manufacture the quay element base slabs. Com-

pletely new assembly towers were made to make the installa-

tion of pre-fabricated reinforcement elements into the element

base slabs easier and safer. After the base slabs were ready,

slipform casts were installed into the fi rst casting position.

At the beginning of September, installation of the silt screen

was started as well as putting the unloading pontoon Bolle

VIII in place and fi nalising the dewatering basins. Dredging

was done in September – October at the same time with the

slipform casting of the quay elements. After dredging opera-

tions were fi nished and the client had accepted the dredging

results, rock fi lling works were started. After enough fi ll for

the base embankment, deep compaction and base levellings

were done.

A 750-ton crawler crane was mobilised from Finland to help

with the installation of the quay elements, which was done

in co-operation with our own fl oating crane Nosto-Pekka in

November and fi nished at the beginning of December. A

newly-made installation raft helped with the positioning of the

elements. Field works for light masts, daywater system and ca-

ble protection pipes were started in December and continued

throughout the beginning of 2016. Construction works were

stopped at the beginning of January due to winter conditions

and they were continued in the middle of March.

The coping beam was completed in the middle of April. The

remaining fi eld works, including asphalting, were fi nalised in

the fi rst half of May. Final inspection and handover to the cli-

ent was done at the end of May, according to the original

schedule.
