Missions and Outreach

This July and August, BSUMC's Kitchen Manager, Darry Milanov, will continue in the kitchen preparing the food for our Monday Night Dinners while most members of the "regular" Kitchen Crews will be stepping back from their duties. We invite you to take part in this wonderful opportunity of service to our community! This is how it works: Darry and a member from one of the "regular" Kitchen Crews will lead you through the cleaning and setting of tables, the final preparation of food, setting up the serving line, and setting up the plate scraping and dishwashing stations. Crew members need to be 18 years of age or older to operate the dishwasher. Start time is around 4:30 PM and crew members usually leave the kitchen by 7:15 PM. This is a great way to get involved with the life of our church.

To sign up, visit the BSUMC website and simply click on the MND SUMMER SIGN UP link under “Contact Us.” If you have any questions, email Megan Pugh at [email protected] or call 540-662-4738.

FULLY RELY ON GOD and JUMP

into the BSUMC Backpack Food Ministry!

Most kids can’t wait for summer, but for some, it's a

scary time of hunger. In Frederick County, about 30-50%

of kids receive subsidized school lunches. For many, this

lunch is their only food that day. Summers, weekends,

and holidays can be very challenging for these

kids. However, BSUMC has a new backpack food ministry

to help hungry children!

Donations are being collected in the greetorium to serve kids at Redbud Run

Elementary, where food insecurity is over 50%. Many of these children have

little parental supervision, so the most helpful donations are nonperishable, sin-

gle serving portions that kids can prepare themselves. During school time,

bagged donations will be delivered to Redbud and discreetly sent home in the

child's backpack. For summer, volunteers will deliver food directly to the

child's home. Since summer donations don’t need to be carried in a backpack,

we may include larger portions, fresh produce, and perishables.

Matthew 25:35 states: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I

was thirsty and you gave me something to drink…" Tracy Hogbin and Anne

Brewster have undertaken this mission with a leap of faith and are using a frog

to represent that we must Fully Rely On God to be faithful servants, helping to

feed hungry children!

UMW READING CHALLENGE

Members of UMW have been asked to read at least one book from the UMW approved list. Our goal is for EACH ONE to READ

ONE. Circle members were to record the books that

they read from September 1, 2013, to August 15, 2014. If you have not yet started, it's NOT too late. Visit the church library and choose a book from the labeled shelves just to the

right of the door. Every book counts! You can record your book on one of our bookmarks available

from your circle leader or on the bulletin board in the library or simply write down the title on a piece of paper. Those who have

read five or more and response magazine qualify for a certificate. Make your circle proud!

Please turn in your list of books to the church office by August 15 or email it to Dee Bauserman.

What Is a Stephen Minister?

Recruiting Call!!!!!!

Stephen Ministers are laypeople—Christian men and women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need. Since 1975, more than 600,000 people from more than 11,000 congregations and other organizations have been trained as Stephen Ministers.

Would you like to know more and perhaps consider becoming a Stephen Minister? Contact Rev. Adam Sowder at (540) 667-3366 or [email protected] or Stephen Leader, Donna Gutierrez at (540) 533-7028 or [email protected].

During the week of July 21-27, 2014, all children ages 4 through rising 6th grade are welcome to come each day Monday through Friday 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM and imagine and build with God. We will also gather for Sunday‘s closing event with a breakfast at 9:45 AM in the Fellowship Hall. We will be singing our favorite songs and showing the congregation what we have learned during this awesome week.

We are actively inviting everyone in the congregation to join us in support of our VBS mission project - The Backpack Food Ministry. Our VBS kids will be helping other kids in the Winchester community by spon-soring a big food drive for the Braddock Street United Methodist Church’s Backpack Food Ministry. This food drive will help provide meals for elementary children in the Winchester community. We will be working with Redbud Run Elementary School to help the children who have been chosen to be recipients of our gifts. The goal of this VBS mission project will be to provide food for the children during the month of August. All Braddock Streeters are urged to participate!

Music Notes by Judy Connelly

It’s Summer - Do you know where our children and youth are? Summertime is rich with spiritual, musical and artistic opportunities for youth and children. Many of these opportunities cultivate seeds that may have been planted earlier in the church year, some simply support exploring new interests, and some will open doors to the future. It’s exciting, as a church, to have the opportunity to encourage children and youth, to know their interests, to lift them up in prayer. This article is part of a series - we are anxious to share information about what our children and youth are doing musically and artistically, in addition to the mission work already reported. Please share with us information about your child’s summer experiences.

Grace Eisenhauer, Shenandoah University student, will be the piano accompanist for “Voices of Youth” - Awakening the UMC to Mission. This tour will run July 3 - 20, beginning with a mission trip on the Island of Nassau in the Bahamas. This is Grace’s second tour with this organization. Samantha Sowder, student from John Handley High School and Bel Canto member, has been asked to be a singer in the “Voices of Youth” tour this summer. After a time of orientation, group building and rehearsal, “Voices of Youth” will travel to Nassau, Bahamas, for one week, then return to the VA Conference to tour, presenting worship experiences to host churches. BSUMC will host a concert July 14.

Madison Rudolph, student at John Handley High School and Bel Canto member, has been accepted into VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) Summer Theatre Intensive - July 13 - Aug. 1. Madison has appeared in shows at Shenandoah Summer Music Theater on the campus of Shenandoah University in past summers.

Josh Rudolph, student at John Handley High School and Bel Canto member, will attend the James Madison Marching Band Camp in July. Josh is a tenor saxophone player for his high school band and has also appeared in Shenandoah Summer Music Theater in past summers.

Avery Sigler, singer in the children’s choir, will be attending SINGGG camp, July 21-25, at Grace Lutheran Church for the fourth year in a row. Avery has participated in many of the camp activities which include: Fancy Feet - liturgical danc-ing, Did You Ring? - handbells, Rockin’ Recorders - playing recorders, Just Jammin’ - exploring different instruments, and Meet the King - exploring the pipe organ.

Ellie Reid, singer in the children’s choir, will attend SINGGG Camp for the first time this year. She will have the opportu-nity to explore the musical offerings listed above, as well as several other artistic ventures: Oh, Origami - learning origami, Bling & More - jewelry making, Fabric Crafting - learning to use a sewing machines, and What’s Cookin’? - learning to make healthy snacks.

Tess Reid will be a parent volunteer for the first time.

Send all summer artistic and musical information involving our children and youth to [email protected].

Together, we may see where God is making disciples.

The Ninth Annual Music and Arts Day Camp for the Northern Shen-andoah Valley will take place at Grace Lutheran Church, July 21-25. This camp, known as SINGGG - Sing God’s Glory, is unique, as it is run by professionals in the field of church music and music education, who volunteer their time and talent. We welcome all rising 2nd - 7th graders. All participants choose an art elective and a music elective, as well as sing in the choir.

Art electives include: Bling & More - jewelry making, Fabric Craft-ing - learning to use a sewing machine, Oh! Origami - hands on origami projects, Rainbow Looming - rubberband bracelets and necklaces. Musical electives include: Just Jammin’ - exploring different instru-ments, Did You Ring? - handbells, Rockin’ Recorders - playing recorders, Fancy Feet - liturgical dancing, Meet the King - exploring the pipe organ, and new this year for younger children, Keyboard Encounters - introduction to the keyboard.

Registration forms are available in the Greetorium, outside the church office, and from Judy Connelly. Online registration is also available.

Register now - all God’s children- Don’t miss this event! Youth and adult volunteers are also needed.

Please contact Judy Connelly, [email protected].

We just had a CPR for Everyone class for the MOPS groups and it was a resounding

success. Winchester Medical Center is fronting an initiative to increase public

competence and confidence in CPR skills with the understanding that ANY CPR IS

BETTER THAN NO CPR. Everyone can do something to give someone the best

chance at survival. In cities where there is a broad citizen response to cardiac

arrest, survival stats go up to 30%, where the national average is about 7-8%. What can WE do? Small

group leaders can have a FREE CPR for Everyone class as a curriculum element. This is what you

need to save someone you love and train your household to do the same. Chances are that will be

your CPR team when you need it, so build your team!!! Call Ellen or Debbie at the church office and

we will organize a WMC educator to come to your meeting with DVD and cool kits.

Health Notes by Debra Miles, RN, BA, FCN

HCW Ebola Update

HCW Ebola Update June 18, 2014

(from WHO, CDC, Reuters and ABC News) Ebola Update 18 June 2014

The number of reported cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) continues to rise in all three countries currently affected by the outbreak - Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. In Guinea a total of 7 new cases and 5 new deaths were reported by the Ministry of Health between 14 and 16 June 2014. This brings the cumulative number of cases and deaths reported from Guinea to 398 and 264 deaths.

Similarly, a total of 31 new cases and 4 new deaths were reported by the Ministry of Health in Sierra Leone between 14 and 16 June 2014. This brings the cumulative number of cases and deaths reported from Sierra Leone to 97 and 49 deaths. Thirty three (33) patients are currently in the EVD Treatment Centre in Kenema. Contacts of suspected and confirmed cases continue to be monitored countrywide.

In Liberia a total of 9 new cases and 5 new deaths were reported between 11 and 16 June 2014. This brings the cumulative number of cases and deaths reported from Liberia to 33 and 24 deaths.

On 6/12/14, the Sierra Leone government announced a state of emergency in the Kailahun district in a bid to halt the spread of the Ebola virus. The government closed borders to trade with Guinea and Liberia and closed schools, cinemas and nightclubs in Kailahun. Vehicles entering and leaving the district will also be screened at checkpoints, and authorities further mandated that all deaths in the district be reported before burial. Anyone who dies of the virus must be buried under the supervision of health personnel, the Information Ministry said. The decision to close district schools came after a nine-year-old whose parents died of Ebola tested positive for the virus, according to Deputy Minister of Information, Theo Nicol. "There is more contacts between school-going kids than adults hence the closure of schools in the most affected district," he said. The ban exempted churches and mosques but religious leaders should urge anyone with a fever to go to a clinic, he said. Local groups welcomed the measures given public concern over the virus, which can be transmitted by touching victims or their body fluids.

All three governments continue to collaborate closely with international officials from the World Health Organization, MSF (Doctors Without Borders) and others. In addition, four proposals for a coordinated response and containment program were developed with support from WHO and have received funding from CERF, OCHA Emergency Fund, DFID and Africa Develop-ment Bank (ADB). Additional experts in epidemiology, social mobilization, case management, and logistics have been deployed to regions with active cases, and cross-border collaboration is ongoing. WHO reports indicate that “community resistance is hindering the identification and follow-up of contacts.”

The Compass Article Submission Guidelines

Anyone wishing to submit an article or announcement for the

monthly newsletter can use the following guidelines for direction

and assistance.

1. Please keep your articles to no more than 150 words. Often,

less is more and less is best. Articles may be edited if they are

too long. Word docs without any formatting are preferred.

2. You may provide a CLEAR photograph to go with your article -

preferably only one per article. If the photograph is not clear or

the resolution is poor, the photo will not be used.

3. Remember copyright laws and always identify your sources.

4. The newsletter’s primary focus is the communication of NEWS

& EVENTS of interest to our congregation. If you do not have any

news or events to report or communicate to the congregation,

please do not feel you are required to draft “something” - an

article from each and every group is not required each month.

It is with gratitude that Braddock Street UMC acknowledges the following gifts:

In memory of Harold Anderson by Bob and Nancy Hartman.

In memory of Gloria Menefee by Thomas and Elizbeth Tyree, Nancy Keyser,

Laura B. Douglass, Nancy Liverman.

In memory of Mick Staton by Albert and Judy Copenhaver for the Organ Fund.

In honor of Ed and Kristin Dawkins’s marriage by Jim and Mary Ashton Athearn for the Youth

Mission Fund.

May 25, 2014 Dear Braddock Street United Methodist Church: On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your gift to the ChildSafe Center-CAC of $250.00 as a sponsor for our Second Annual Champi-ons 4 Children 5K Walk/Race. Your generous gift helped us raise about $3000 that will allow the center to offer a child-focused approach to services for young victims of abuse and their non-offending caregivers. With your assistance, the ChildSafe Center-CAC can continue to provide a compassion-ate and effective alternative to traditional investigations by providing a safe and comfortable environment in which chil-dren may tell their stories and by facilitating coordinated in-vestigations among law enforcement, criminal justice, social services, advocacy groups, and medical and mental health professions. Again, thank you for assisting us in our efforts to create a community where children can flourish free from abuse and neglect. Your support of our mission will truly help us touch the lives of children and help us protect those who cannot protect themselves. Respectfully, Kelly A. Bober Executive Director, ChildSafe Center-CAC

THANK YOU…..for your support of our very own Relay for Life Team, The Braddock Street Angels. Together we raised over $7,035.00. We can all take pride in knowing that we are helping to save lives, helping people get well

and stay well, and helping to provide support to individuals who are fighting cancer and to caregivers,

including people in our own community.

Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and all that move in them.
