Course Code: MLS 101 Course Title: Phlebotomy In this course, students will be acquiring the skills of blood collection in the clinical area under the supervision of a clinical instructor. During this course, you will be exposed to a wide range of cases and patient age groups. Course Code: MLS 103 Course Title: Introduction to Medical Laboratory Sciences Students will be introduced to Medical Laboratory Sciences. Ethics, conduct, certification, education, employment, sample collections and fundamental knowledge and skills related to medical laboratory science. Course Code: MLS 214 Course Title: Urine and Body Fluid Analysis This course will provide the student with the knowledge and laboratory skills required to function effectively in a Urinalysis and Body Fluid laboratory. Urine formation, physical, chemical analysis of urine and the microscopic examination of urinary sediment will be introduced. Urinary and metabolic diseases as they relate to urinalysis findings will be discussed. An introduction to body fluids and their clinical significance will be examined. Specific diseases/disorders and associated abnormal findings will also be covered. Course Code: MLS 218 Course Title: Biochemistry and Metabolic Disorders This course focuses on the general structural and functional properties of biomolecules such as, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids. During this course you shall be exposed extensively to major metabolic processes and pathways e.g. metabolism of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, lactose, glycogen), lipids (fatty acids, cholesterol, lipoproteins, bile salts) Proteins (amino acids, urea synthesis, conversion of amino acids to specialized products), purines and pyrimidine their disorders and interrelationship in various situations, with emphasis on relevant clinical situation. Course Code: MLS 226 Course Title: Haematology I This course introduces students to the theory and practical application of Haematology as it relates to the medical laboratory. Bone marrow, blood cell formation, with emphasis on the red blood cells, haemoglobin structure and synthesis, cell function and morphology are explored. Correlation of laboratory test results with clinical signs and symptoms to diagnose red blood cell disorders. Laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and quality assurance in the haematology lab are included. Course Code: MLS 229 Course Title: Medical Microbiology I Theoretical part of this course is divided into two modules. Module-I will introduce to pathogenic risk groups, microbiological specimens collection and principles of different techniques commonly used in diagnostic microbiology laboratory culminating with an overview of automation and quality control. Module-II will classify bacterial pathogens and discuss general characteristics, pathogenicity, virulence and laboratory identification of commonly identified medically important bacterial pathogens. Practical part of the course will equip students with hands on experience in usage of different classical microbiological techniques. These techniques include the staining character, artificial culture media preparation and usage, isolation techniques, biochemical identification and antimicrobial sensitivity testing. Course Code: MLS 230 Course Title: Medical Parasitology Theoretical part of the course is divided into two modules. Module-I deals with the introduction to different protozoal pathogen, their characteristics, life cycles and laboratory diagnosis for parasitic diseases caused by them. Module-II will describe various features of diseases caused by helminthes (Cestodes, Nematodes and Trematodes) and their identification characteristics. Module-II & -I will prepare student to use the acquired knowledge in specimen selection and application of appropriate procedures for the isolation and identification of different parasites. Practical part of the course will train students in different concentration techniques, preparation and observation of parasitic mounts and identification of the most commonly encountered parasites in clinical specimens.

Course Code: MLS 313 Course Title: Haematology II This course involves the studying of the molecular bases and aspects of haematological malignancies. The course will concentrates on the clinical and laboratory applications of the most common benign and malignant white blood cell disorders aided by case studies and explanation of laboratory findings. Course Code: MLS 315 Course Title: Clinical Chemistry II and TDM This course is designed to introduce you to more advanced topics in clinical chemistry, including blood gases and acid-base balance, electrolytes, clinical endocrinology, vitamins, trace elements, tumour markers and porphyrins (heme metabolism). During this course, students are expected to gain sufficient skills and knowledge in performing and interpreting test results related to topics covered in the course. In addition, you will be introduced to TDM and its applications- measuring specific drugs at designated intervals for drugs with narrow therapeutics range and for drugs that can cause adverse effects for example, quinidine, digoxin, gentamicin, vancomycin, phenytoin, theophylline, cyclosporine and others common to current lab tests menus. Course Code: MLS 319 Course Title: Clinical lab Practicum In this course, you will apply the theory and practical of the above courses in the clinical lab. Rotation schedule and clinical check- list will be prepared to guide you during, your clinical training. The training will be under the supervision of clinical preceptors. Course Code: MLS 320 Course Title: Medical Microbiology II Module-I of the course will elaborate on special groups of bacterial pathogens and advanced differential diagnostic approaches being applied on clinical specimens in the current clinical microbiology laboratories. In addition, general properties, structure, taxonomy, virus life cycle, replication of viral genome and identification techniques used to detect viruses will be discussed. Module-II is dedicated to the most commonly encountered human viral infections. Details on virus structure, pathogenesis and laboratory diagnostic approach for selected viral pathogen will be discussed. Module-III will provide comprehensive information on classification, characteristics and laboratory identification of medically important fungi and the mycoses caused by them. Practical component of the course will allow the student to apply basic and advanced microbiological techniques for isolation, identification and characterization of bacterial and fungal pathogens from clinical specimens. Course Code: MLS 323 Course Title: Blood Coagulation This course deals with studying of normal homeostasis and coagulation; the basic concepts of primary& secondary homeostasis and platelets structure & functions will be covered. The course also will focus on the pathophysiology of different hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases and the techniques used to diagnose different coagulopathies. Course Code: MLS 324 Course Title: Forensic Medicine This course introduces the student to Forensic Medicine and Science. The course covers topics relevant to the subject, including forensic pathology, incident investigation, laboratory support and legal aspects. Course Code: MLS 325 Course Title: Cell Biology and Genetics This course is concerned primarily with the human cell. In this course, you will study many areas of cellular biology including synthesis and functions of macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, protein gene expression, membrane and organelle structure and function in addition to cell cycle and cell-to-cell interaction. You will understand what happen when cells do not work, as they should.

Course Code: MLS 327 Course Title: Cytogenetic and Molecular Biology This course will introduce the students to diagnostic cytogenetic and molecular biology. The course will focus on the studying of the chromosomes structural and numerical abnormalities and the available laboratory methods for the detection of such abnormalities. Moreover, the course will include a comprehensive description of currently used molecular biology techniques for diagnosis of genetic, oncogenic and infectious disease. Course Code: MLS 329 Course Title: Histopathology and Cytology This course consists of two sections; the first part includes introduction to histology, preparation of histological sections, classification and detection of protein, nucleic acids, connective tissues, carbohydrate, amyloid, pigments, and microorganisms. The 2nd section focuses on the introduction to cytology, collection and preparation of cytological specimens, fixation of gynaecological, urinary, respiratory, body effusions, gastrointestinal, fine needle aspirates cytology, hormonal cytology of the female genital tract and sex chromatin.

Course Code: MLS 410 Course Title: Quality Assurance in Lab Medicine The Clinical Laboratory Quality Management (QM) course is a comprehensive course that covers the QM terminology, practices, statistics, safety and troubleshooting. It provides students with the essential knowledge required to set up a QM system, introduce quality control concepts and use a statistical process control to verify the reliability of patient results. Finally, this course will help students quickly and easily identify and correct errors in quality control and safety procedures. Course Code: MLS 412 Course Title: Lab Field Practice I This course consists of 12 hours per weeks’ clinical rotations, during which you will discover the clinical environment both in primary and 2nd health care sittings. Rotation schedule and clinical check- list will be prepared to guide you and the clinical supervisors during the clinical rotation in Bacteriology, urine& body fluid, routine Haematology and Parasitology sections. Course Code: MLS 413 Course Title: Immunohematology Immunohematology is a specialized branch of laboratory medicine, which involves the study of blood group antigens and antibodies. It involves the study of the principles, procedures, clinical significance and practice of a wide variety of procedures including donor selection, component preparation and the use, and techniques to detect antigen/antibody reactions, which may adversely affect a patient who is receiving a transfusion. The topics to be covered include donor screening, preparation of components, antigens and antibodies of the ABO, Rh and other blood group systems, pre transfusion testing procedures, haemolytic disease of the foetus and new-born and adverse effects of transfusion. Course Code: MLS 415 Course Title: Clinical Seminar This is an advanced course which will focus on development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills in all of the lab disciplines as well as integration of Lab analysis, interpretation and application. Activities include discussions, case Studies and assignments. Course Code: MLS 416 Course Title: Medical Immunology and Serology In the first part of this course, the student will explore how the immune system protects us against diseases, and how it can harm you if it is disturbed. Autoimmunity, Hypersensitivity and immunodeficiency are studied briefly. In its second part, you will be familiarized with the serological tests used in the lab diagnosis of diseases. Course Code: MLS 419 Course Title: Food Microbiology This course will introduces to the importance of microorganisms in food production industry such as bread baking, fermentation processes, cheese and yoghurt production, contamination, spoilage of food, food-borne diseases and intoxications. Students will learn the standard qualitative and quantitative techniques, for isolation and identification of microbial contaminants of food, as well as to prevent or minimize exposure of the food chain to such agents. Moreover, the learners will be exposed to the new biotechnological advancement in food industry Course Code: MLS 423 Course Title: Graduation Project You will get the opportunity to be involved in the current issues of concern in the clinical lab scientist. Topics include methods of diagnostic testing, selected disease conditions, lab safety. You are going to use the computers and current topic in health. Course Code: MLS 425 Course Title: Lab Field Practice II The course consists of 16 weeks of clinical rotation, in which you will assume a full responsibility as medical lab technologist with minimum supervision. You will get the opportunity to apply the theory and practical knowledge in the lab diagnosis. Course Code: MLS 223 Course Title: Clinical Chemistry I This course is designed to introduce you to the various analytical techniques and methods used in the measurement of various parameters in the blood and other body fluids, and to gain technical skills and knowledge of interpretation of test results in health and disease states. This course shall also cover clinical and diagnostic enzymology The course mostly covers routine laboratory investigations related to disorders of plasma proteins and amino acids, enzymes, kidney function, liver function, pancreatic function, and gastrointestinal disorders

Course Code: PHAM 418 Course Title: Toxicology for PH This course covers the basic principles of toxicology as they apply to environmental health. Students will initially be introduced to basic definitions and concepts in the field of toxicology. Next, the course discusses the toxicokinetics of poisons including their absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination, as well as their toxico-dynamic interactions within biological systems and the resulting symptoms. Such processes will be highlighted in specific toxicants from foods, the environment and those implicated in communicable diseases, posing a risk to society. Special emphasis will be made on the preventive measures and management of these toxicities. In a student-centered learning environment, the course focuses on the application of these concepts to the understanding and prevention of mortality and morbidity resulting from environmental exposure to toxic substances. Course Code: CGS 102 Course Title: General Chemistry You will identify the properties and reactions of common classes of organic compounds, the relationship between their structures and their physical and chemical properties.
