1. Message from the Co-Presidents We are pleased to present our Co-Presidents’ report for the 2019 season.

What a year we have had! Three of our five teams made the finals, with the senior men and the senior Renegades making their respective grand finals but unfortunately fell agonisingly short against two talented opposition teams. The sense of pride from the supporters and members has been enormous and on behalf of the Club’s committee we again want to thank all players and the coaching groups for your efforts this year on the field in playing Brunswick football with pride in the mighty purple jumpers and also for the way that you have handled yourself off the field in representing the club as Brunswick Football Club people.

Off the field we continue to go from strength-to-strength, especially with the One Club movement and the strong affiliation being formed with the junior players and coaches. This year we have had the U19s, the Renegades and the NOBs all have members of the junior club come and experience a senior match day, warming up and immersing themselves within the playing group and then running out with the teams. Never underestimate the value of including these kids from the juniors, the simplest task might seem a token thing to you but it means the world to them and it might just be the next senior player you are helping.

It is also great to see some of our players immersing themselves into the coaching ranks with the juniors – Luka and Will from the U19s coached the U8s this year and next year we will see Sash and Flick coaching the U14 and U16 girls’ teams respectively. Fantastic to see!

Community clubs like ours don’t function without the valuable contributions from our sponsors and coterie members who give their time, their money and their knowledge to the Club to help make it a better place.

Our sponsors have increased significantly this year on the back of some hard work of our sponsorship team. It is a culmination of hard work in getting our sponsors greater exposure on our various mediums around the Club and online, but it is also a sign of the growth of a Club specifically as a community club. We have five senior teams but also have sponsors that have jumped on board with the One Club approach and are sponsors of both the senior and junior football clubs. It opens sponsors up to our 350 junior players and their families as well as the nearly 200 Auskick participants covering every inch of Gillon Oval on Saturday mornings.

We would like to thank our sponsors for 2019. The Victoria Hotel, Green Apple Dentistry, Back in Motion Brunswick, Max Results, Tax Store, Nelson Alexander, Blue Rock, Welcome to Thornbury, RPD Plumbing, Northrop, BJS Jewellery, Melba’s Food Hall, Bridgestone Select Brunswick, Laguna Pools, Clancy Constructions, Northway Honda, Fad Gallery, WPB Property, Cera Stribley Architects, Network capital, Cha time and Orbit Logistics.

We would also like to thank our coaches for 2019 whose efforts have been monumental in a variety of circumstances. To Peter, Leonie and John, to Adam and Ryan, to Matt, Anthony, Wayne, Ned and Trevor, the club and the players thank you for your contribution this year. Coaching is a massive undertaking and we hope to have as many of you back next year as we can.

A special thank you to Peter Carter for stepping up mid-year in trying circumstances to unite the senior men’s playing group and take them to a grand final. Both Peter and senior Renegades coach Leonie have both decided to move away from the coaching for next year and we thank them for their fantastic contribution over a long period of time.

We are excited by the appointment of Tim O’Dwyer as senior men’s coach and look forward to seeing what he brings to the Club both on and off the field. The senior men have been promoted to Division One next season and we look to push forward with a bunch of young talent coming into calculations next year, especially from the U19 group.

We are also looking forward to finding the right candidate for the senior Renegades coaching position and hope that person can be installed in the near future for what is a fantastic opportunity.

Some of our key achievements this year include:

• Erasing the Club’s debt from the 2018 season which included the cost of installation of the light at Clifton Park West.

A huge amount of work has gone into erasing this debt, led by our treasurer Craige Mott with the help of Vu from Brunswick Tax Store, one of our new sponsors. We have exceeded our expectations around sponsorship and profits from successful functions and are proud to hand the next committee somewhat of a clean slate financially. As Craige is stepping down, we thank him greatly for his efforts and wish him all the very best in whatever he does next!

• On-field success.

As we mentioned earlier we had fantastic success on the field this year which matched our off-field success from the last few years, financially and culturally. This is a testament to the coaches and their game plans but also to the recruitment processes in that we have become a destination club for many around the area as well as the continual push towards a true community club within the VAFA.

• Sustainable growth of women’s football.

The Renegades list for 2019 stabilised in what is our third year within the VAFA competition and sixth year overall. There were 75 registered players against last year’s number of 88 which shows that we continue to be a destination club for women’s football given the number of clubs continuing to start women’s football teams in the area. As the VAFA competition grows and evolves we will wait and see what changes will be made for 2020 however we hope to remain in a similar division to that played in 2019.

During the year we were successful in securing a ‘Change Our Game Community Activation Grant’ for $5,000. The Change Our Game Community Activation Grants fund one-off community level events that showcase and celebrate the role of women and girls in sport and active recreation. The grant will be used to host a community day at the Club that will include the following programs:

• Skills clinic for junior players • Panel discussion on diversity and inclusion in footy with local players, coaches

and officials • 'Come and try' session for senior women

It is hoped that this community day will continue to increase the profile of the Brunswick Renegades and assist in recruitment of new players for 2020.

• The Million Dollar grant.

Working closely with the Brunswick Junior Football Club and the Brunswick Community Sports Club we have successfully won a million dollar upgrade of our facilities from the State Labor Government. Works will commence next year on the next stage and we look forward to sharing in the new upgrades for years to come.

We are now campaigning with our Federal member and local Council to match that offer which would allow us to fully upgrade the social rooms as part of the Master Plan redevelopment. Thanks to those involved in the process, especially Greg Banova who led the charge.

Recruiting and training for 2020 has already commenced, with a sub-committee formed armed with a database of potential new recruits and returning stars. Stay tuned to our social media updates for announcements. We will again have three senior men’s teams and two women’s teams again, which is great for sustainability for the club.

We must thank our fellow committee members who without we wouldn’t be able to function as a club, and especially to the winner of the Leo Smythe Best Club-person award this year in Kelly Dungate. The committee members all do a wonderful job, many of which go unnoticed. They are Bernie, Craige, Kelly, Jess, Mitch, Pete, Francis, Tim and Denise. Also thank you to our two team managers for their tireless efforts all year.

Lastly I (Kim) have decided to step down in my role as Co-President and from the Brunswick Football Club committee. After six years as a committee member and the last two as Co-President it is time for me to spend some more time with my family. I have absolutely loved being a part of the family that is the Brunswick Football Club, being a part of the committee has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done and something that I will treasure forever.

In particular I want to say a big thank you to Jarryd for the last two years, we embarked on a new Co-President structure at the beginning of 2018 and we have worked together easily during this time sharing the load and bouncing ideas off one another. I wish Jarryd and the rest of the committee every success for the future.

We look forward to a successful 2020 both on and off the field.

Thank you

Jarryd Browne & Kim Hennessy, Co-Presidents

2. Financial Report Summary

The 2019 Financial Year was a good one for the Club making an Operating Profit of $13,198. Revenue was up 5.43% to $224,449 from $212,918 in 2018.

The Gross Profit margin was 6.72% higher on the back of increased pricing for player subscriptions, an increase in sponsorship and the receipt of two grants in the later part of the season. As a result, Gross Profit was $159,983 and 71.27 % up $22,550 from $137,433 and 64.55% in 2018.

Total costs declined by ($5,652) to $144,785 in 2019, from $150,437 in 2018.

The decline in costs was mainly due to the better management of costs in the football department and in particular the better management of trainers and a policy change of not paying Team Managers in 2019.

The general and admin costs were up $7,273 in 2019 on the back of a once off $10,000 payment to Moreland Council as contribution towards the Clifton lights project.

There were some one-off marketing costs in 2018 associated with rebranding the Club that were not present in 2019. Marketing costs declined from $7,484 in 2018 to $3,326 in 2019.

All coaches, suppliers and the VAFA were paid in full.

A summary of the 2019 Results Vs 2018 is presented below.

2018 2019 (Under)/Over $ $ $ Total Revenue 212,918 224,479 11,561 +5.43% Gross Profit 137,433 64.55% 159,983 71.27% 22,550 +16.41% Footy departments (111,396) (102,628) (8,768) -1.31% General/Admin (31,558) (38,831) 7,273 + 23.05% Marketing & Advert (7,484) (3,326) (4,158) – 55.56% Total Costs (150,437) (144,785) (5,625) – 3.74% Other (323) (2,000) Operating Loss (13,327) 13,198 + 26,525

The Balance Sheet at the time of writing contains no creditors or debtors and approximately $10,000 and an estimated $2,000 in re-saleable Club merchandise.

Total player memberships increased by $8,309 in 2019 despite the number of registered players declining by 17 from 2018.

Sponsorship

The Club could not operate without the continued support of our sponsors. In 2019 cash and non-cash sponsors contributed $42,867 which was up $16,532 on 2018.

The Club welcomed the following new sponsors in 2019: BlueRock, Welcome to Thornbury, Green Apple Dentist, Tax Store Brunswick, Melba’s Food Hall, RPD Plumbing, Chatime Brunswick, Bridgestone Select Brunswick, Hope Street Space and Factory Café Bar.

The Club thanks the 2018 Sponsors Back in Motion, Max Results and Nelson Alexander for increasing their financial contribution in 2019.

The following loyal sponsors continued a sponsorship arrangement with the Club in 2019; Orbit Logistics, Northway Honda, Clancy Construction, Cera Stribly Architects, BJS Jewellery, Laguna Pools, WBP Property Valuations, Network Capital Consultants.

Our supplier sponsors included Dineamic and BLK.

The full list of 2019 sponsors and how to contact them can be found on our website at:-

All Saints Coterie & New Supporter Members

The All Saints Coterie was again run by Garry Foulds and Peter O’Farrell in 2019 and the Club acknowledges and thanks them for their ongoing leadership. The Coterie welcomed again members from Brunswick Junior Football Club; Beth Scott of Quality Service Improvement, Peter Lalor of BlueRock and Brendan Geary, a former NOBs player now at BJFC.

In a first, the annual Coterie dinner was held at Welcome to Thornbury, a new sponsor in 2019 and achieved a record attendance of 80 including a table from BJFC and two tables of Renegades players. A great night was had by all with guest speakers Ross Smith and Jess Trend entertaining guests with their stories of AFL and AFLW.

Page 8: BRUNSWICK FOOTBALL CLUB INCORPORATED · Cera Stribley Architects, Network capital, Cha time and Orbit Logistics. We would also like to thank our coaches for 2019 whose efforts have

The Coterie contributed $8,214 for 2019 including a Pre-Season pledge of $3,350 up $1,202 on 2018. The number of Coterie members declined by 2 to 41.

The Club’s $50 supporter membership netted $1,147 in 2019 down ($1,034) from 2018.

Fundraising Activities

Fundraising activities included the Annual Ball, Quiz Night, Annual Coterie Dinner, Reverse Raffle, Members & Sponsors Day and Toyota Good for Footy raffle. Together they netted $17,873 in profit for the Club, down ($6,980) from 2018. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped organise the 2019 fund raising activities.

Bar, Canteen & Thursday Night Meals

The bar, canteen and Thursday night meals contributed $19,215 in net profit, down ($1,111) from 2018. The decline is due to the extra byes the Senior Men had in the 2019 fixture with fewer home games. The club is indebted to the efforts of Peter & Dawn Hevey, Carolyn Burgess and Monty & Marion Montgomery for their tireless work in the canteen.

Grants

The Club received two grants in the back end of the Season that contributed $7,500 of unbudgeted income to the Club. Well done to Secretary Tim Purdey on applying for and receiving a $2,500 local community sporting club grant from the Moonee Valley Racing Club. Well done to Caitlin Maher-Gale, Stephanie Wellicome, Kyla Raby and Emily Taylor for applying for and receiving a $5,000 grant from the State Government for the development of women’s football.

Recommendations for 2020

1) Deeper integration with BJFC:-

i. Financially incentivise BJFC to participate in fund raising activities

ii. Recruitment of new sponsors to both clubs

iii. Recruit more Coterie members from the Juniors

2) Recruit more Supporter Members to the Club

Players and committee members should aim to recruit one member each in 2020.

It should be a goal of the Club to have at least the same number of supporter members as we have playing members. Player members in 2019 were 164. The equivalent number of supporter members at $50 after GST would net the Club $7,454 and relieve some of the pressure to fund raise.

Page 9: BRUNSWICK FOOTBALL CLUB INCORPORATED · Cera Stribley Architects, Network capital, Cha time and Orbit Logistics. We would also like to thank our coaches for 2019 whose efforts have

Brunswick Football Club Incorporated Annual Report 2019

9

More supporters will in turn drive merchandise sales, bar, canteen and incentivise more sponsors.

3) Increase game day patronage

i. Bring a supporter campaign

ii. Game day events such as Presidents Lunch and Members & Sponsors day

iii. After game Club meals and events held in the Club rooms

iv. Player reunions held in the Club rooms.

4) Pre-Season targeted social media engagements

i. Follow and like as many targeted businesses as possible within the Brunswick post codes on social media.

ii. Engage with the other Football Clubs throughout Country & Metropolitan Victoria to lift the profile of BFC.

Greater awareness of the Club on social media will help drive local sponsorship and create a profile for prospective recruits, particularly country players.

Thank You

Thanks to Vu Nguyen from Brunswick Tax Store for his help during the year with the accounts and administration of the Club’s finances.

Thanks also to the sponsorship sub-committee being Francis Valente, Jess “Wolfie” Finlay and Denise Zumpe. Frank managed the Back in Motion relationship, Jess managed the Renegades-centric sponsors and Denise worked tirelessly all year as a relationship manager with the majority of sponsors. Denise made close to 100 sponsorship posts on social media and proactively contacted our sponsors and invited them to the Club’s events.

Thanks also to the committee, Derek MacDonald and Daniel Harris the Marketing Manager at Bluefish444 for his efforts to create The Gillon newsletters, manage the website and create social media content.

4. Coaches’ reports

4.1 Renegades

Senior Women (Premier C) Results: Won – 12, Lost – 4; Finished 2nd (out of 8).

Reserve Women (Premier C Reserves) Results: Won – 4, Lost – 8; Finished 5th (out of 7).

Renegades Senior Coach’s Report Firmly set on continuing the momentum of the 2018 season, we set our goals for the 2019 season and finals was one of our targets. Numbers had reduced from the previous season to a list of 68 which was more manageable. We learnt from 2018 season that we needed to build strength and endurance to be physical and have the ability to finish off games. Max Results played a pivotal role with a program that was exactly what we needed to achieve our goal, a third of the playing group committed to themselves and the Club that they were serious about finals.

Our list of 75 players consisted of 16 new players that had never played a game of footy, 6 players transferring from other clubs and 46 players returning to a Club they called family. This made for a pre-season with far greater experience and preparation. Last year 70% of our list had never played, this year 21% were new to the game which meant we had a lot more experience, skills and ability. Training numbers were constant over the entire pre-season with players doing extra training away from the club and with Max Results. The player’s eagerness and enthusiasm of the impending season was exciting.

Round 1 approached and our game plan was simple; high pressure, physical and win the ball across the ground. The Renegades are known as the hard tackling team that opponents dreaded lining up against and we didn’t want to lose that reputation. The improvement across the Club and pre-season was immediately on display with the Premiers defeating Canterbury by 66 points with players crediting Matt and his trainers with their new found fitness. The Reserves didn’t start the season off as we had hoped however showed some very promising signs that they weren’t going to be beaten easily this season.

Round 2 and the Premiers continued their high scoring with a convincing win over Old Melburnians by 71 points, the Reserves had a bye but were chomping at the bit to prove themselves.

Round 3 came and the Ressies were ready to put 4 points on the board, which they did, defeating St Bede’s by 10 points whilst the Premiers learnt wins aren’t a given or easy, losing to St Bede’s by 36 points

Page 12: BRUNSWICK FOOTBALL CLUB INCORPORATED · Cera Stribley Architects, Network capital, Cha time and Orbit Logistics. We would also like to thank our coaches for 2019 whose efforts have

Brunswick Football Club Incorporated Annual Report 2019

12

Rounds 4 to 14 Premiers were dominant, winning 9 out of 11 with a big win in round 6, defeating the opposition by 114 points. Premiers had secured 2nd position on the ladder and finals footy was upon us. The Ressies limped through the season due to some serious injuries and lack of availability from the playing list which meant a few times they were left short or players had to play up to fill the Premiers team. However, even under those conditions, they won 3 out of 11 with a bye and it came down to the final game against Yarra with both teams trying to secure 4th position on the ladder. Unfortunately we lost by 11 points but it was an exciting game to watch The coaches were extremely proud of the playing group and look forward to building again in 2020.

Round 1 of the finals and we played Yarra, a team who defeated us the week before, with the winner to go straight through to the GF. We knew after the week before what we had to do to stop their game plan and the players executed that so well, shutting down their midfield from playing on at every opportunity which resulted in us defeating them by 4 points in a battle that left nothing in either team’s tank.

Grand Final day we had planned well, reviewed the game plan, trained hard during the week and felt like we were the better team. Our confidence was high before the game but from the first bounce the game was never ours.

Overall the season again was another great success and as coaches we couldn’t be more proud of each and every player who contributed on and off the field. To all of those who volunteered their time we appreciate your efforts and know without you, playing wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you to our sponsors who give us so much. A special thanks to the Committee who put in so much work behind the scenes to make this Club the best in the league and congratulations to all the Club award winners for 2019 season!

As I am stepping down from coaching I’d personally like to mention that this Club over the last 6 years has been a big part of our lives, we are so grateful for the friendships we have made and extremely excited to see where the club goes in 2020 and beyond. We wish you all the best and will be cheering you all on from the sidelines.

Keep building on the foundations, creating a pathway for the juniors and know that a premiership is just around the corner.

All the best!

Leonie Hennessy, Senior Women’s Coach

NOBs Senior Coach’s Report The 2019 season began with the obvious impact of knowing that Brunswick FC would be entering Division 2 of the VAFA for the first time in a very long time. Whilst 2018 was a tough year, the coaching group felt that it was the relegation that had to happen. After 3 years of hanging on in Division 1 and fighting off relegation at the death in 2016 and 2017, the 2018 year unfolded, and felt quite inevitable. However, from the relegation year the FC introduced genuine young talent, and a heap of it. The team’s age demographic plummeted to numbers which very much reflected a team which was rebuilding but would also be playing together for many campaigns ahead.

Pre-season

The mood was very optimistic throughout the pre-season. Many of the regular senior players from 2018 signed up for the Max Results program. The result was awesome. Many of the players not only improved their general fitness and strength but built on the closeness of the previous year. This meant that when at regular pre-season training, the coaches could work more with structures and have a closer look at how the Round 1 teams would line up. Also, the pre-season news of the return of Chris Ford and Michael O Donoghue as playing coaches was a great boost. Numbers throughout the pre-season were significantly up on previous years. It was not uncommon for us to have 50+ at training, but numbers were steadily around 45 most nights.

Rounds 1-8

It was obvious that with such a great pre-season, the expectations from the group were very high. And although in Round 1 against Whitefriars both teams started with a loss, the rounds to follow gave the players a heap of confidence in the first half of the year. The second match against MHSOB very quickly became the Francis Evans show. After half time, the team was able to shake off a slowish start to break free and play dominant football. Evans kicked 8 goals in a clear BOG performance. This performance was the catalyst for kick starting a great run of form. Matches against Powerhouse, Ivanhoe and Bulleen showed the team had genuine class and a hunger to really dismantle opposition teams. At times it very much felt like the team was showing a ruthlessness as a result of some of its losses from 2018.

Round 6 was our second testing match for the season. We faced off against Glen Eira at home. The game was close throughout the day with Brunswick generally holding a 3-4 goal advantage. In the last quarter GI challenged hard, and despite the win, a worry emerged amongst the coaches that when put under pressure, our team fell away from its structures. Dom Sullivan kicked 8 goals in Francis Evans’ absence which earned him the BOG honours. With a comfortable win against Hawthorn AFC away, we headed into the Round 8 bye, with only one loss and a very healthy percentage.

Rounds 9-11

The second stanza of the year started with us hosting Yarra Valley at home. It proved to be a tough assignment. The game was an arm wrestle throughout but eventually our combination of youth and fitness meant we ran out victors on the day.

Page 14: BRUNSWICK FOOTBALL CLUB INCORPORATED · Cera Stribley Architects, Network capital, Cha time and Orbit Logistics. We would also like to thank our coaches for 2019 whose efforts have

It was obvious to the coaches at this part of the year that Whitefriars were the team to catch. Glen Eira, Yarra OG and MHSOB were the only other real opposition in the division. As coaches, we began to work our way towards developing a game plan that had a chance of beating them. This remained the focus of discussion amongst the coaches for the next fortnight.

In Round 10, the team comfortably accounted for Powerhouse. Nick Burgin took out the BOG after kicking 5 goals and playing a supreme game though the midfield and half forward line.

On a windy, rain-soaked day, we travelled to Glen Eira for Round 11. These conditions suited the GI game style as their bigger bodies kept pace with us for the first half. GI took a 2-point lead into the half time break and seemed to have most of the momentum. After half-time, our players responded and became more physical in and around the stoppages. Matt Brown and Geremie Ganino showed real leadership in this area and seemed to will teammates around them to crack in and get involved. They did and BFC took a 13-point lead into 3-quarter-time. Early goals to GI in the final term saw the momentum again shift. The CHF from GI was dominant. Again, our structures failed, and we began to honey pot and lose our way. We almost got out of jail when we kicked a goal with 5 minutes left in the game. An umpiring error on the far side of the ground and a subsequent 50-metre penalty allowed GI to kick a late goal and win the match by 4 points. Aaron Tsarouhas, who was the offending player, was visibly distraught after the game. A pleasing aspect of this loss was the way which the Club’s leaders all spoke to Aaron after the game. To me, it is moments like this that can define the group and showcase the respect they have for each other.

The following week was the Reverse Raffle at the Club. The week after that I was appointed as senior coach.

Rounds 12-18

In Round 12 we met MHSOB at home and, after beating them comprehensively earlier in the season, they played really good football with a clear game plan of clogging up our forward line and limiting our ability to play with structure. Although we eventually won by 9 points, it was an uneasy feeling amongst the group that the loss of Anthony Palmer as coach might have a lasting impact. I personally did not coach well. I felt the pressure of my new role and felt lucky to escape with a win. After the game I had in-depth conversations with many of the players individually about staying focused and continuing the take on the challenges ahead.

We played Whitefriars for the second time this year in Round 13. The game was taken from us in the first quarter in a brilliant display of midfield/ruck dominance by the WF midfielders. Our pressure went up as the game progressed, but the challenge was too great. WF eventually ran out victors by 48 points.

In the following weeks we played Bulleen, Yarra Valley, Ivanhoe and Hawthorn. All wins were comfortable. In this time, I and the other coaches made several decisions to change some of the structures and personnel. In this time, I encouraged the assistant coaches to have more of a presence and ownership of their roles. Mick O’D and Chris Ford at this time of the year really stepped up. The dialogue and mood of the group changed significantly as a result of the hard work they were putting in. Danny King and Nick Burgin also took their leadership to new heights in the group. All of the forementioned should be congratulated on the way they went above and

beyond for the Club. In this time, Adam Wright also transitioned into full time coach of the reserves. He also needs to be commended for his actions throughout these rounds, as he brought great stability and poise to the group.

Finals Series

The less said about the Second-Semi Final the better. We picked what we thought was our best team to take on WF. Before the game Lefty and I noticed a genuine uneasy feeling amongst the group. This notion was realised by the performance we produced: beaten by 140+ points in an embarrassing display for the Club.

We had what many would call a “crisis meeting” in the rooms the following Tuesday. I encouraged the players to move on and focus on the main objective of getting the Club back into Division 1. On the Sunday, I watched the MHSOB vs GI game at Sandringham. MHSOB played well and ended up getting on top of GI late in the game. This was in our favour; I think had we played GI in the second final we may have found ourselves in a much different position.

In the Preliminary Final, we outplayed MHSOB throughout the contest, eventually winning by 58 points. James Schmidt, Josh Perez and Lewis White (in his first senior game for 2019) all played extremely well.

Grand Final

On the track we had a great preparation for the game. Geremie Ganino had a slight hamstring tear and was nursed though the week. He survived a fitness test to be named in the 22.

To have any chance in this game, we knew we had to change some things. A decision was made late to play Chris Gavaghan in place of Kyle Adams. This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. Kyle took the news with grace; he was very disappointed but accepted the decision.

Compared to previous encounters, it was our start to the game which was impressive. Our pressure was as good as I had seen it all year. The WF mids found it very difficult to get clear possession anywhere on the ground. Patrick O Donoghue was a clear BOG for Brunswick. Nick Burgin, Chris Gavaghan, Danny King and Josh Perez were amongst the other best players on the day. Whilst disappointing, the sense of pride in the group was very present. The group turned around a 144-point belting into a 25-point loss in two weeks. The mood amongst the supporters and players in the rooms after the game very quickly went from pride to discussions about the potential of next year. In my speech after the game I echoed this sentiment by saying that this is a Club which is going places.

Season Report from Me!

I would like to thank the Club, its committee, sponsors and supporters for the faith they have showed me ever since I arrived at the Club in 2014. As a player I found the Club to have a very friendly and community-minded culture, it is one of the enduring reasons why so many quality people are drawn to the Club to be involved.

To find myself as the senior coach of such a great Club with such an amazing history is very flattering. Whilst I would never have applied to do the role on my own, the chance to help the Club in such a dire time was an honour. The support of the players and coaches was one of the things I will never forget. I learnt more about football and the way in which football clubs operate in 7 weeks than in 20+ years of playing football. Although Anthony Palmer is no longer involved in the Club, I wish to thank him for the lasting impact he has had on me and my football journey. Anthony, Lefty and I entered the 2019 season knowing the task in front of us was daunting. The hard work of Anthony and Lefty in the last two years may never be fully appreciated, which is a shame. But nonetheless, the Club has significantly benefited from their appointments, which is satisfying.

Jarryd and Kim, who had one of the most challenging years from a presidential point of view, should be commended for the way in which they handled a turbulent year. Jarryd was a pillar of support for me personally and I look forward to seeing him in the role again next year. I wish Kim all the best in her future endeavours.

The coaching panel of Adam Wright, Chris Ford and Michael O Donoghue worked tirelessly throughout the year. Amongst the three of them, the football IQ coupled with their great personalities made my job so much easier, especially at the closing stages of the year where I was losing the plot! It is my hope that all three can be retained in some capacity. Their knowledge of the playing group and its workings will be invaluable intel for the next senior coach. I would also like to thank Garry Foulds for his mentoring of my coaching at the latter stages of the year. His support and feedback was critical to me reaching a better level of coaching.

The support of the sponsors always plays a huge role in the success of any football club. From day 1 of the pre-season, Matt Roberts and the Max Results gym have been a major factor in the direction of the Club this year. I would like to thank Matt for all his hard work and contributions throughout the year. Matt was a great ally on game day, his experience and insight were invaluable to the group. I heard last week that Matt has again put his hand up to help in 2020, which is a critical signing in my opinion.

Danny King again led the club extremely well. He became a very necessary conduit in both motivating and educating younger players at the club. He also helps establish and maintain the culture of the club in the best possible way. The Club is currently lucky to have several younger leaders emerging, in my opinion this is a result of the leadership shown by Danny in the past two seasons. I would happily endorse Danny to be returned as senior captain in 2020.

I will not be re-applying for any of the coaching roles in 2020. I look forward to seeing new coach Tim O Dwyer and the team in action. One of the main factors in my decision to not re-apply is the knowledge that, if the right coach is found for this Club, the work of Anthony Palmer, Adam Wright and I can continue. Having met Tim O’Dwyer in recent weeks, I am confident the Club has made a great appointment to take this young, talented group to bigger and better things. I wish the Brunswick FC all the best for the upcoming 2020 season and many seasons to come. With many thanks!

4.3 Under 19s

U19 Division 4 Results: Won – 9, Lost – 8; Finished 7th (out of 12).

Coach’s Report

2019 was the second year that the Brunswick FC had a team in the VAFA U19 competition.

In 2018 we had our first team in the competition put together by Trevor Ludeman and Ross Coverdale. It was always going to be difficult to field a side of 17-18 year-olds on a weekly basis, especially from scratch. Trevor implemented an agreement with Uni Blacks (where their leftover players were allowed to help us out with numbers), which certainly helped us, along with some Colts filling in throughout the year the team got through a season having to forfeit only a few games because of lack of numbers. But we had young boys from Brunswick playing footy for Brunswick. A fantastic effort by Trev and Ross.

So come 2019, I decided to take on the job because my son Angus was intending to play.

We began our attempt at putting a side together. Light on for numbers we decided to target Angus’ friends, from school and cricket. We started the year with about 13 players on the list with a few deciding not to play on from last year. The agreement that Trevor had put in place the previous year was a godsend as we had enough players to front up for the first few games. Although beaten by stronger and more skilled opposition, we were on our way. A bit of a setback in Round 3, Angus came off complaining of a sore wrist, this after spraining his ankle in Round 1, I said to him when he came off, “what’s wrong now”, so he went back on. The wrist turned out to be broken, so down one more player (missed the next six games). Our big break came when we lost our 4th straight game and we asked to be put back into Division 4, which was probably our level. It had a number of teams similar to us, but also some very strong sides like Melbourne High, De La Salle, Peninsula and Williamstown. After being regraded to Division 4 we were certainly more competitive and started winning more games than we lost.

Our recruiting was going well. We recruited Archie Fulton-Grigg, Alex Avraam, Alex Alexandris, Jack Spencer, Mathias Foley, Anthony Roussos, Tristian Francis, Alex Georgopoulis and Declan Sparrow. Shannon Gill returned and Jack Ludeman also started playing again half-way through the season. We also had a couple of cameo appearances from Stefan Stangherlin. So we went from needing up to six or more players from Uni Blacks to not requiring any. We were up and running by about Round 8. We had a bunch of boys who were training hard – they had to train or not start on the ground – which seemed to work. We were enjoying the competition, even if we were cited for two melees, which we successfully challenged!

Roy’s Pizza Shop in Melville Rd was our fortress. We would meet there every three weeks for a team meal, which was certainly popular with the boys and bonded them both socially and in their resolve to play for each other on the weekend. So in the last 13 games of the season we won 9, lost 3 and had 1 bye which counted as a win. So it all came down to beating Melbourne High at Melbourne High to guarantee us a spot in the top six. Jack Ludeman didn’t play (sick) and Mathias Foley, our small goal kicking forward, didn’t research where the ground was and

ended up at a ground in Essendon so he was out. We were beaten by a point in a game that Melbourne High thought they would win comfortably.

Even though we had beaten St Kevin’s twice in this run of good form we needed them to lose a game for us to play finals. Unfortunately they had two teams in the U19 comp and their higher team had no hope of making finals, so guess what? They started beating sides in the top four in the run home and didn’t drop a game. This kept us out, but we came close and had a great year. There were a number of highlights in the year.

Our two best wins were Round 14, when we beat Mazenod on their home ground by 80 points. They were 4th and we were about 9th at that point. It was a great win and all boys did exceptionally well. The other highlight (which I have included a photo of) was the last round of the year. We played De La Salle at home. They were in the top four as well. We had to win to give ourselves a chance of making finals. A mate of mine owns Max’s Protein Supplements so I asked him if we could have 40 Challenge Accepted T- Shirts as a build up for the big game. We all had them on in the pre match warm-up and there was a great spirit among the group. We went out and played hard and came out with a 10-point win. All we hoped for was that St Kevin’s might lose, as they had earlier in the year, but again they defied the odds and got up, keeping us out of the finals.

Sides like us are up against it when we play the school sides that have more than one side in the competition. We don’t have the option to move players up and down to facilitate finals aspirations of whatever side may be in the position to make them.

Our other highlight was Will Bonney McKenzie winning the Division 4 medal. Our boys fared well in the vote count with Gus, Paddy and Angus finishing in the top 20, which was a great effort seeing we lost our first five games on the trot.

On a personal note I thoroughly enjoyed coaching this group of young men who went about their football in an enthusiastic and disciplined manner. We had a lot of fun and certainly bonded well both on and off the field.
