Welcome to our town, Brownsburg! Our community has much to offer our residents and businesses, Four Star schools, reasonable tax rates, and a location only minutes from most of Indianapolis. Hendricks County continues to be one of Indiana’s fastest growing counties, but Brownsburg has retained its small town friendliness and feel while experiencing remarkable growth in recent years. The sleepy hamlet of 7,600 in 1990 has grown to over 25,000 citizens today.

New schools, subdivisions, office / industrial parks, and businesses have made Brownsburg an even more desirable community in which live and work. Families can enjoy a growing parks system, including Arbuckle Acres Park, which is home to several annual festivities like the Festival of the Arts, Easter Egg Hunt, Independence Day Lions Extravaganza and other family-friendly events. Athletic league activities include: community soccer, basketball, football and baseball. The softball team has been competitive on a national basis in recent years. Dozens of social and service organizations have chapters in Brownsburg, where residents take great pride in their community and its improvement.

With metro Indy right next door, and quick access to four interstates via I-74, Brownsburg has transitioned from a small town to an important suburban community attracting businesses and new residents from across the United States. Home to Lucas Oil Raceway and dozens of motor sports team headquarters, Brownsburg rightly wears the honorable title of “Drag Racing Capital of the World.” Whether cheering on your favorite driver at on of the many racing events, or supporting the “Bulldogs” at homecoming, there is no shortage of things to do in Brownsburg.

In 1834, William Harris platted a town named “Harrisburgh,” but the name was short-lived. Renamed for one of the first settlers, James B. Brown, the town was founded in 1836 with the establishment of a post office, and incorporated in 1848. In 1998, Brownsburg celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th) birthday. Brownsburg stayed a quiet community until the 1990’s, when suburban growth in metropolitan Indianapolis expanded the population by over ninety percent.

Brown Township was a marshy landscape and had few settlers in 1863, when it was divided into two townships, Brown and the new Lincoln. The expanding town now occupies most of the center of Lincoln, and suburban growth has expanded into the southern end of Brown Township as well as the eastern portion of Middle Township. A railroad station was erected in 1869, which helped to fuel growth in spite of the fact that, with numerous stops, the train trip to downtown Indianapolis took over an hour.

What began as a small business district at the intersection of U.S. Highway 136 and State Road 267 has grown in recent years to two major retail and service corridors. In the 19th century, as many as 100 horse-drawn wagons congregated at a tavern at this always-busy junction. Within a block of this crossroads is the beautiful town center. Built in 2006, this traditionally-styled municipal complex houses Brownsburg’s Town Hall, and a state-of-the-art Police headquarters facility.

The expansion of the warehouse and light industry sector brings hundreds of non-resident workers to town every day. Brownsburg continues to chart its own course . . and add to its unique history.

Transportation

THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICAJust ten minutes from I-465, the interstate highway that encircles central Indianapolis, Brownsburg has easy access to all of Indiana’s major transportation routes. I-74 runs across the north side of town, providing a direct route into Indianapolis’ many interstate and state highway connections. US Highway 136 (Main Street) and State Road 267 (Green Street) are the major East-West and North-South routes through Brownsburg, both offering additional interstate freeway access.

The expanding Ronald Reagan Parkway is a recently-developed transportation corridor that runs through Brownsburg’s east side, serving the ever-growing industrial and distribution complexes centered there. This major North-South parkway includes a recent interchange with I-74. Brownsburg commuters have easy access to all of metro Indy through the aforementioned highways, but can also use many local surface streets and roads to reach the state capital’s west side.

Three hours to Chicago, Louisville and Cincinnati are just two hours away via interstates, and Indianapolis International Airport, with more than a dozen air carriers averaging over 175 flights daily, is under twenty minutes from almost anywhere in Brownsburg. Several private air fields serve area residents, Including Gordon Graham Field, just east of Danville (the county seat), and Eagle Creek Airpark, directly east of Brownsburg and adjacent to Indy’s Eagle Creek Park.

Running parallel to US 136 is a rail line operated by CSX, which serves several of the aforementioned industrial parks. A major CSX switchyard is in Avon, just six miles south of Brownsburg.

Education

BUILDING STRONG MINDS!Excellence in education is important to the Brownsburg community. From preschool through higher education, Brownsburg Community Schools offers access to some of Indiana’s finest learning institutions. In 2015, the system added two additional Four Star schools to the six facilities that held this academic honor in the two prior academic school years . . . providing the best in elementary education!

As Brownsburg continues to grow, new facilities have been built and existing schools expanded and upgraded to make room for the town’s booming student population.

The Brownsburg High School Bulldogs participate in many sports, recently earning two state titles in football and the 4A baseball state title as well. Boys and girls also participate in cheerleading, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, cross country, track & field, basketball, wrestling, swimming, diving and softball.

Brownsburg Schools have a strong academic tradition, too. Students compete on Quizbowl, Spellbowl, Superbowl and Speech teams. Marching band, color guard, jazz and pep band, and theater troupes entertain the community throughout the academic school year.

Higher education is available only minutes away. Most Indy colleges and universities’ campuses are about a half-hour from Brownsburg: Butler University, Christian Theological Seminary, Indiana Tech, Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian University, and University of Indianapolis. Just to the west are two highly-rated private liberal arts schools, Wabash College and DePauw University.

A number of private technical schools also have campuses in metro Indy. Hendricks College Network is a non-profit organization that coordinates higher education opportunities for Hendricks County residents. Classes are conducted by eight colleges and universities, and meet at a number of locations and school facilities around the county – including in Brownsburg. Homes

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE A HOME!Some of the best housing values in the United States are found in the Midwest, and in Brownsburg. Older turn-of-the-19th-century homes are a reminder of the days when Brownsburg was just a sleepy hamlet on the outskirts of the bustling city of Indianapolis.

The explosive population growth in Hendricks County in recent years has increased Brownsburg’s population by over 150% since 1990. New housing abounds in subdivisions that ring the old town central core. Existing housing stock range from $75,000 to over a million dollars. New homes are being built primarily in the $135,000 to $500,000 range.

Numerous subdivisions are north of I-74, including the exclusive neighborhoods of Windridge Landing and Oaks at Windridge, where homes can sell for over $900,000. Highland Springs is on the east side of State Road 267, at the curve north of County Road 800 North.

South of the interstate is old Brownsburg. In the new century, dozens of housing developments have sprouted up from formerly farmed soil. Larger homes and lots are in the Northridge neighborhoods, north of Arbuckle Acres Park, and around the West Chase Golf Club on the town’s far west side.

Rental living is also a viable option for residents. Apartment complexes – new, and established – with the usual amenities (club houses, play areas, swimming pools) are primarily located along State Road 136 (Main Street) on the south side, and on the northeast side, off East 56th Street. Free apartment guides are available around town to assist renters in their choices.

For senior residents looking for maintenance-free living and on-site healthcare services, Brownsburg offers retirement community and assisted living options. Facilities like Brownsburg Meadows’ two campuses and Brownsburg Health Care Center provide safe, social communities that take the worry out of retirement. For citizens of all ages and in every stage of life, Brownsburg has living space options to meet every need.

Dining & Entertainment

DINNER AND A DATE!Brownsburg offers a wide variety of restaurant options for an evening out. National chains, local eateries, and fine dining blend to allow for any occasion.

Downtown diners may choose between casual dining and pizza. A drive east along Main Street or north on Green Street will take you past numerous “fast food” and pizza restaurants, or national and regional chain favorites. These thoroughfares are also home to several unique local dining choices, like Dawson's Too Sticks & Stones, Green Street Pub and Eatery and the Boulder Creek Dining Company.

Brownsburg is also home to Mexican and Asian restaurants, as well as several coffee shops. Italian food aficionados will find options, too.

After a great meal out, head over to Goodrich Theaters’ Brownsburg 8 for the latest digital projection on the big screen. This multiplex also hosts special events, birthday parties and special film promotions.

Next door, in nearby metro Indy, there are over 175 movie screens showing everything from the latest Hollywood blockbuster, to “indie flicks” and art films. Indianapolis also has dozens of museums and live theatre groups, as well as a number of large concert venues from which to choose.

At 1400 North Green Street, new stores, services and eateries have moved in recently. The Shoppes of Brownsburg, at 600 E. 56th Street, is another retail center.

If you can’t find what you need in Brownsburg, in Avon, along US 36, there are more national retailers. Plainfield’s Metropolis has JC Penney and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as other “destination” stores. Many of Indy’s malls and retail centers are only 30 minutes away. Speedway, just 10 minutes via I-74, also has many retail, restaurant and service businesses.

Like the town itself, Brownsburg’s business community has grown quickly in recent years. In addition to a quaint downtown business district at US Hwy 136 and Green Street, strip malls, business parks, restaurants, and an industrial park are all in the heart of town.Retailers K-Mart, Walmart, Lowe’s and Kohl’s anchor shopping centers on the north and northwest side of town. Distribution, retail, and the auto racing industry have led the way in new growth, and new housing has expanded construction.

Kroger and Marsh operate large grocery super centers. Maplehurst Bakeries is headquartered here, along with its large frozen donut bakery. Other large employers include Copper & Brass Sales, Home Goods, Guitar Center, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Lumber One.

Lucas Oil Raceway brings tourism dollars to Brownsburg, and is one of the larger employers. Racing and auto industry firms abound in “Nitro Alley,” including auto racing teams that are headquartered here.

The Greater Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce and the Hendricks County Economic Development Partnership work with new & existing businesses to create an environment that spurs jobs growth, benefits the economy, and attracts new investment locally.

While the commercial, industrial, and retail business sector is expanding in the county, almost 60% of employed residents still work outside the county. Being part of a large metro area with excellent surface roads, commuting to jobs throughout metro Indy is a way of life for over 40,000 suburbanites.

Like much of Indiana, agriculture is still an important part of the Brownsburg area’s economy. Corn and soybeans are the biggest cash crops, but cattle, hogs, and dairy cows are also raised. As the town continues to grow, fields that once grew crops will continue to sprout new retail and housing developments.

Government

Brownsburg is governed by a five-member town council that meets twice monthly. An elected Clerk-Treasurer and appointed Town Manager handle many municipal duties at Town Hall, 61 N. Green Street. Town Court and the Police Department are in the same building, at 31 N. Green Street.

The Brownsburg Police Department is led by a chief who directs 43 officers and 9 reserves. The Brownsburg Fire Territory covers 53 square miles in Brown and Lincoln Townships, with three stations and 80 firefighters. Their combined efforts make the town a safe place to live and work. Steady growth around Brownsburg means that many in the community live outside of the current corporation limits. With suburban growth, subdivisions are occasionally annexed by the town. Prior to any town annexation, property taxes are determined by the county assessor.

Quality of life is an important factor when choosing the right community for your business or family. Thanks to its great schools, affordability and safety, Brownsburg is a community of choice. Twice recognized among Money Magazine’s best places to live, independent surveys recently ranked the town fifth in Indiana for homeownership; fourth among the best places in Indiana for young families; and eighth among the state’s safest places to live.

Brownsburg’s sucessful economic development program touts low corporate and property taxes and a number of incentives for new companies and developers. With lease assistance, low-interest loans and tax abatements, commercial and industrial investment in real estate and personal property totaled nearly $42 million and incentives helped create or retain 400 jobs in 2014. And, in its first year the Facade Improvement Grant program awarded more than $100,000 to 16 established local businesses for exterior projects.

For the potential new business or resident, Brownsburg has much to offer. It’s the place we like to call home. We hope you will, too.

With more than 400 employees on its health plan, Hendricks County Government was facing a dramatic 11.4% increase in healthcare costs. A creative partnership with Hendricks Regional Health to establish an employee health clinic, and other wellness services, helped stave off this budget challenge. Hendricks County Government has experienced only a minimal 0.75% average annual increase in healthcare costs since 2010, translating into a savings of more than $2 million for Hendricks County taxpayers.

Could partnering with Hendricks Regional Health improve the health of your employees and the bottom line of your business?Learn more at HENDRICKS.ORG/EMPLOYERS or by calling (317) 745-3532.
