Elanco is a global competitor in the field

of Animal Health and a division of Eli Lilly.

Elanco initiated the process of developing a

new global headquarters campus that would

represent both an autonomous aesthetic as

well as an advance in workplace functionality.

Using the principles of Integrated Workplace

design, Browning Day endeavored to

create an open, modern office conducive to

collaboration and innovation, while providing

the concentrative areas required in a market-

leading, research-based company.

The second phase of the Headquarters project consisted of the addition of two new buildings to the campus and the renovation of office space in the existing three-building complex.

Amenities in the new two-story 64,000 square

foot building include a mix of conference

spaces, enclosed offices, open workstations,

social hubs with full kitchenettes, a cafeteria

and a full service commercial kitchen, a fitness

center with a group exercise room and shower

facilities with lockers. An enclosed structure

connects the new facility to an adjacent

existing office building.

The goal of this project was to create a space

that represented the image of GEICO, as well

as adhere their budget needs. The existing

Technicolor building, at 103rd and Meridian,

was renovated to introduce the newest trends

in open office concepts to help attract and

retain talent.

This original space had offices covering all the

windows which didn’t allow any natural light

into the general office space. The outer office

walls were removed to allow more natural

light in, and the cubicle walls were lowered.

The 108,000-square-foot space now provides

a trendy, open office where users can develop

a healthy office culture as well as maintain

high-performance productivity.

Tim Wise was the senior design architect and

the lead interior designer for this project while

employed at another firm.

This project design was based on the

prototype created at the GEICO Service

Center in Indianapolis. It aimed to address the

newest trends in corporate design and appeal

to their Millennial generation client base.

The tenant improvement included the design

of a 136,000-square-foot, modern workplace

that aligned with the insurance company’s

budget. While redesigning the interior, the

offices were removed from the outside walls

to allow the windows to be shared throughout

the office and the cubicle walls were lowered.

A local IT group required a highly interactive

workspace with a vibrant atmosphere to fit the

needs of their employees and clients. This existing

space initially had large offices lining the walls and

high-walled cubicles that didn’t offer access to

outside light or to a collaborative space.

The 22,000-square-foot space now offers

room for 22 professionals along with a series of

collaboration and huddle rooms. The outside

office walls were removed so that the windows

were open to the entire office, and the cubicle

walls were lowered to offer a colorful and open

view. An Apple bar was added to the lobby area

where employees could collaborate on technical

assistance and have team building interactions.

This budget-driven project was used as an

exercise to demonstrate that high-level design

concepts do not require high-level budgets. It

was also a new prototype that was introduced

to GEICO as a contemporary, high-performance

workspace that brings natural elements into the

technical sphere.

Tim Wise was the senior design architect and

the lead interior designer for this project while

employed at another firm.

New BuildingBATTERY INNOVATION CENTER

Newberry, Indiana

A new building was constructed for a privately-

held battery testing facility that tests and

develops batteries for nuclear submarines,

Lithium Ion technologies and top secret military

technology used by Special Operations Unit

gear. This was a Public Private Partnership

and required communication with multiple

stakeholders to successfully execute the project.

All parties were brought together in the initial

phase to align expectations through a visioning

session.

The building consists of two zones: the

test facility and the office space. The client

envisioned an open space that was easy to move

between the office and the testing facility as

well as opening the entire space to natural light.

Some features of the testing facility include

battery test cells, clean room and multiple

locations for battery design and testing. The

office space was opened up to incorporate

natural light, collaborative workspaces and

conference rooms.

Tim Wise was the senior design architect and

interior designer for this project while employed

at another firm.

Meyer Najem Corporate Headquarters, Fishers, Indiana

Page 17: Browning Day Interior Design Experience

This project is a new headquarters building for

Meyer Najem, an Indiana-based construction

company. The second is broken into three tenant

spaces and is utilized by tenants of the Town of

Fishers. This building is part of the new historic

Nickel Plate District in Fishers. Each space was

designed with current office trends, such as

huddle zones, collaboration spaces and an open

office environment.

The two-story building includes a common lobby

for all tenants on the first floor. The building

also houses a medical clinic for the Town of

Fishers. Bluebridge, a fast growing tech firm,

on the second floor exemplifies the incubator

for startup businesses in Fishers. It is one of

Indiana’s fastest growing tech firms. The design

needed to fit the trends of a rapid growing

company that employs Millenials. Flexibility,

collaboration, privacy, mobility and natural light

were the keys to making this a successful space.

A central café area was created to help anchor

this fast paced mobile company.

Tim Wise was the senior design architect and

lead interior designer for this project while

employed at another firm.

Bluebridge is one of the fastest growing

tech companies in Indiana, and they were

interested in developing an office space that

represented and appealed to Millennial clients

and employees. The space would be flexible for

future growth and team collaboration. Sales,

research, design and coding teams needed these

group spaces for meetings and team building

experiences. The client envisioned a modern,

mobile work environment that represented their

culture

The space is on the second floor of the Meyer

Najem building, in the Nickel Plate District of

Fishers, Indiana. The open office houses four

departments, two of which needed more privacy

due to noise and security. Features include five

offices, four conference rooms and a reception

area. Modern additions include bench-like

seating near the kitchenette, standing height

desks and movable furniture. The design

solution exceeded the expectations of the client

and users.

Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf served as

Architect-of-Record for the remodel of the

historic Canterbury Hotel in downtown

Indianapolis, into a luxury brand, boutique

hotel. The 73,794-square-foot soft remodel

included the complete renovation of 100 guest

rooms into comfortable king size beds and

oversized showers. A large, open atrium was

infilled to accommodate more meeting space,

and the entire first floor was transformed

into a boutique restaurant, complete with

a redesigned kitchen by a renowned food

service designer from San Francisco. A new

800-square-foot fitness center, furnished with

the latest fitness equipment, was included in this

renovation.

Close collaboration with several out of state

designers allowed Browning Day to bring

the project to fruition on a limited time line.

Construction drawings and construction were

completed within 12 months.

HOSPITALITY

Delaware Country ClubMuncie, Indiana

Browning Day led the client through a design

process that dramatically created a more open,

modern, and functional entry experience for the

Club members.

This was achieved by demolition of previously

existing walls which opened up the entry lobby

connecting it with a bar space now useful to

three function areas. The design solution

worked within the structural constraints

of the building and respected mechanical

infrastructure to maximize budget.

Beyond the reconfiguration at the entry lobby,

new finishes were provided to freshen up the Ball

Room, private dining areas, lobby and entry.

The Club members and management were

extremely pleased with Browning Day’s

creativity and responsiveness.

The Global and International Studies Building, a

mix of both office and classroom areas, houses

nearly 300 dedicated faculty offices, in addition to

large areas for workstations integrated amongst

the offices. The auditorium, 13 classrooms and

six seminar rooms provide registrar controlled

educational space along the bottom two floors.

Large and small conference rooms are dispersed

throughout the upper floors.

The exterior architecture looks both to the past

and to the future of the campus. The exterior

facades are rendered in modern adaptations of

recognizable details from the historic buildings

on campus. While the Jordan Avenue façade is

familiarly massive with punched openings and

grouped windows, the multi-story lobby is a

transparent glass enclosure, designed to permit

views within and beyond its boundaries, to and

from Wells Library. The curved west wing forms

a radial edge along The Arboretum, further

integrating building and site.

Browning Day was Architect-of-Record. Ennead

was design architect.

Physics BuildingPURDUE UNIVERSITY

West Lafayette, Indiana

The Purdue University Atomic Molecular and

Optical (AMO) physics program needed a

facelift for their existing lab space. As the first

collaboration space of its kind on campus, the

design team thoroughly researched how the

space could be used most effectively. The design

is based on open office and collaborative space

concepts that help foster the direct interaction

of faculty and researchers.

The renovated 3,500-square-foot space will

help advance the AMO program and its research

requirements. The design features include a

shared conference room, a separate heads down

research space and a large, flexible collaborative

area with movable furniture and glass marker

board walls.

Horticultural Building Studio RenovationPURDUE UNIVERSITY

West Lafayette, Indiana

The goal of the Purdue Horticulture Building

Rooms 117A and 117B design studio renovation

and roof replacement was to create a highly

functional, engaging and contemporary studio

space for Landscape Architecture students.

The existing structure was built in phases during

the 1920s and 1930s, and presented several

challenges due to its lack of accessibility, size

constraints, inefficient mechanical systems,

outdated furnishings and finishes.

Browning Day collaboratively created a solution

that raised the uses and efficiencies to modern-

day standards, and the standard of Purdue’s

outstanding and highly-ranked Landscape

Architecture programs. The unique identity and

positive experience the design team created

for the department will carry through to other

studios in the building.

Wells Library Renovation:Bookmark[et] EateryINDIANA UNIVERSITYBloomington, Indiana

Located on the ground floor of the Wells

Library on Indiana University’s Bloomington

campus, the existing dining space was

completely renovated to serve the needs

of contemporary students. Prior to this

renovation, the space was dated, service flow

was inefficient and tight, and serving options

were very limited. By studying similar campus

offerings, and clearly defining a vision for this

space and what it could add to this part of

campus, Browning Day was able to deliver a

space that brought fresh and healthy options

to its students, and a dining space that offered

areas for collaboration and interaction

amongst students, faculty, and staff.

Containing over 9,500 square feet, the space

now provides seats for 150 guests and five new

food service venues - International, Panini,

Grille (Scholar’s Inn Bakehouse), Coffee (Coffee

Bean & Tea Leaf) and Gelato (Chocolate Moose

& Gelato DaVinci) Concepts.

This design sets the new standard for wellness

communities, and provides users a fresh

perspective on senior living and rehabilitation

facilities. This project is a combination of the

newest trends of Assisted Living (AL) and Skilled

Nursing (SN) facilities and the amenities of a

hotel-like atmosphere, all on a limited budget.

The designer brought a new focus to Mainstreet,

the investor and developer. By focusing the

design on interactions and relationships

rather than the architecture a new version of

Mainstreet America was born. By putting more

emphasis on individuals and their relationships,

the space becomes an environment where

people live, play and socialize.

The 67,500-square-foot facility was required

to have a 60/40 split between AL and SN

capabilities. The new, two-story building offers

destination points or third spaces for residents

to interact as they go from area to area.

The organizational strategy of this building

was based on providing hospitality/retail

components in the front of the structure

through three direct collision points. The first

point of interaction is at the main lobby where

residents, staff, and the outside public all come

together. The second and third points are at the

east and west ends of the building—setting a

tone for public and private interaction—and

are connected by an expansive corridor referred

to as “Mainstreet.”

The hospitality theme is carried into the residents’

rooms that are located directly behind and

connected to the Mainstreet corridor. The

residential wings house skilled nursing residents

on one side and assisted living residents on the

other. While the skilled nursing wing contains nurse

stations, both spaces include lounge areas for

more communal interactions. The entertainment

and rehabilitation wings are easily accessible from

the residential area, which includes 62 private and

eight semi-private living quarters.
