competitiveness and therefore, we will have to manage our
cost wisely.
We are in the 60th year of our glorious existence and this year
happens to be the Diamond Jubilee year for NLC. We have
started NLC Leadership Excellence lecture series for
promoting excellence in all fields of our business. We have
plans to organize Best practice - National Seminars in the
fields of Power Generation, Mining and Contracts
Management this year. On this line, already we organized HR
Best practices Seminar during the month of April 2016 in
association with NIPM, Neyveli Chapter.
Our company believes in ethical governance and sustainable
practices. We aim to grow and contribute to the growth of
environment and society. With the monsoon approaching,
plans for promoting Aqua Culture, Organic Farming, and
Herbal/Medicinal plantat ions are underway for
implementation. We have to create more greens than we use.
As part of our green initiatives and water resource
management we have already launched schemes like
'Jal Paryapta' by deepening and de-silting lakes and water
bodies in and around Neyveli and 'Jal Udaya' through water
harvesting. The 'Jaldhara' Scheme that we launched in a
limited way last summer to provide drinking water and
buttermilk to thirsty is going to be expanded in a bigger way by
installing RO based drinking water Kiosks to alleviate the
drinking water difficulties for the people around.
We are responsible Miners and environment friendly Power
Generators. All our business activities centre around people
and planet, and profit, considered essential for any
commercial activity, will come last but not at the cost of people
and Planet. We have many dreams and I am sure with our
'can do spirit' we will not simply chase our dreams, rather we
will live them. Let us join together for living our dreams with a
larger aim to empower the growth of our great Nation.
Jai Hind! Vanakkam!
Dear Colleagues,
My Greetings to you.
The first quarter of 2016-17
that went by has been
eventful for NLC in many
ways with certain good
developments to cheer and
c e r t a i n b u s i n e s s
challenges which flagged
caution demanding our
quick resilience.
I am glad to share that we
have got the approval of
Government of India for
installation of Ghatampur
Thermal Power Project of
1980 MW (3 x 660 MW) in Kanpur district of UP and now with
main plant awards ready parallely, which is a unique
achievement, construction activities at the site will be taken up
soon by our JV company NUPPL. Our foray into green energy
generation is in line with the clean energy mission of our
Government. We laid the foundation for a 20 MW battery
storage Solar Power Plant at Port Blair and are planning
another 30 MW pump storage Solar Power installation at
Kalpong in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. A 130 MW
Solar Power Plant at Neyveli and another Solar Power plant of
same capacity at Barsingsar are on fast track and we are in
touch with the State Governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,
UP and Odisha for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and
lands for Solar Power Plants aggregating to 1,900 MW Power
generating capacity. Our Wind energy generation capacity
has reached 30 MW and soon we will achieve the total
planned capacity of 51 MW.
The first quarter of this financial year opened against the
backdrop of our performance and achievements in the year
2015-16. Despite the setback that was caused due to
unprecedented rain and floods in the months of November
and December last year, we could pull up our operations and
the total revenue of the company rose to Rs. 7,194.20 crores
against Rs. 6,796.97 crores of the previous year, registering a
growth of 5.84%. But our net profit got adversely impacted by
under recovery in thermal side, mostly due to non stabilization
of TPS II Expansion Units.
Now the first quarter of 2016-17 brought with it a new
challenge in the form of unusual surrender of power by user
States/DISCOMS. The quantum of surrender was high and
almost on a daily basis which resulted in a total of 354.5 MU
generation loss, impacting our revenue by around
Rs.150 crores. To face this new challenge we will have to
tighten our belts and ensure that our cost of generation per
unit of power remains absolutely competitive so that the users
prefer NLC power in a merit order generation market. To
salvage the situation partly, we have resorted to power trading

New Projects
NLC's Green Initiative at Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Selling More Power & Spreading More Smiles
Foundation Stone laid for Solar Power Project
NLC’s New Initiative to Trade Surplus Power
NLC is venturing into the renewable energy sector by
harnessing solar energy in various parts of our country. The
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of
India, has devised an action plan for the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands (ANI) towards achieving its green energy
goals. NLC has been assigned the establishment of solar
based power plants in Andaman with a view to phase out the
usage of the diesel generation sets.
NLC, a forerunner in implementing the programmes of the
Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has
proposed to install the solar power plants to the tune of about
50 MW at Attam Pahar in South Andaman and at Kishorie
Nagar in North Andaman. These projects will be established
by NLC under the scheme of MNRE which provides 40% of
the capital cost as subsidy. In this regard, an MoU was signed
on May 10, 2016 in New Delhi among NLC, MNRE and the
Andaman & Nicobar Administration. As a part of the actions
initiated jointly by NLC and the Andaman & Nicobar
Administration, the requisite land has been identified in Attam
Pahar, Garacharma, and the site preparation activities are
underway for installing the 20 MW solar power project.
To mark the commencement of the project activities, Lt. Gen
A.K. Singh, Hon'ble Lt. Governor of ANI, laid the foundation
stone for this 20 MW solar power project on May 30, 2016 in the
presence of Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon'ble MP, ANI,
Shri Sarat Kumar Acharya, CMD, NLC, Shri Anindo
Majumdar, Chief Secretary, ANI, Shri P. Selvakumar, Director
(P&P), NLC and Shri Arun Baroka, Principal Secretary
(Power), ANI.
CMD, NLC, in his address pointed out that this 20 MW solar
power project is proposed to be installed with sufficient
capacity of battery energy storage system to cater to the power
needs of South Andaman with a fairly flat and firm power
throughout the day time and the evening peak demand period.
This arrangement will considerably reduce diesel
consumption for power generation, thereby limiting the
environment pollution. The cost of power generation will also
be less compared to the current diesel based power
generation in Andaman.
CMD also informed that a 30 MW solar power project will be
established in the North Andaman which will be linked with a
pumped storage system of Kalpong Hydro Power Station.
This is the first of its kind in India wherein a part of the solar
power generated from this project will be utilized for pumping
of water from lower reservoir to upper reservoir in the day time.
This will ensure operation of
the hydro power plant
throughout the
year.
NLC has taken a new initiative by entering into trading of
Un-requestioned Surplus Power (URS) surrendered by
DISCOMS, thereby increasing the availability of electric
power for consumers in general in the country. On June 19, 2016,
NLC provided one million units of URS power to the grid
through the trading portal of NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam
(NVVN), New Delhi and Southern Regional Load Despatch
Centre (SRLDC), Bengaluru. This initiative is first of its kind in
the Southern Region and is in line with the new tariff policy
notified by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, in
January 2016. This step taken by NLC in consultation with the
beneficiary DISCOMS, is beneficial to the community at large.
At present, NLC operates Thermal Power Stations at Neyveli,
Barsingsar, (Rajasthan) Thoothukudi with Wind power
Project and Solar Power project all adding up to the total
installed capacity of 4,301 MW. The power generated by NLC
is being shared by the States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Rajasthan, and the Union
Territory of Puducherry. By this new initiative, our power will
be fed beyond the Southern States.

Shri S.K. Acharya - Nominated as Co-Chairman of a National Committee
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has nominated Shri Sarat Kumar Acharya, CMD, NLC as
the Co-Chairman of the National Committee on Mining 2016-17. This is a rare honour conferred by the
CII on our CMD in recognition of his extraordinary administrative efficiency. On the National Mineral
Exploration Policy (NMEP) approved by the Union Cabinet on June 29,2016, Shri Acharya observed
that “the Union Cabinet approving the National Mineral Exploration Policy (NMEP) for Non-fuel
and Non-Coal Minerals is a bold and a welcome step.
“This policy is poised to bring in the world class practices adopted in exploration of minerals.
It throws open the Indian Mineral Sector to a wider and competitive participation of exploration
companies, both domestic and foreign. Thus, the new policy will pave the way for bringing down the
cost of exploration in the country and enable creation of a comprehensive Geo-Scientific &
Exploration database comparable to world class standards, like in Australia,” he said. Shri Acharya also noted that for the
successful implementation of the NMEP the following issues need to be addressed: the Union Government may create an
institutional mechanism to co-ordinate the activities of the players like the exploration industry, research and academic bodies
and financiers to make the exploration procedures a success. The Government may initiate and implement the changes in an
enabling framework i.e., legal, reguIatory, financial, fiscal etc., required for obtaining the best possible results in exploration.

2015-16: Incessant Rains Impact Profit Margins
Though our TPS-I Expansion and TPS-II generated power
beyond the targets, the incessant rains that brought the power
generation to a grinding halt had impacted the profits. The
company suffered a power generation loss of 763.72 Million
Units, resulting in a consequential loss of around Rs.409.73
Crores.
Moreover, the quantum of exceptional items for the year
2014-15 and for the year 2015-16 was one of the major reasons
for the drop in profit of the year under review. The surcharge
received from Electricity Boards for the previous years (2009
to 2014) (Rs.345.57 Crores) was loaded in the exceptional
items of 2014-15 as revenue. Whereas, for the year 2015-16 no
revenue was earned in the exceptional items, but the
Voluntary Retirement Scheme compensation paid to the
employees (Rs.28.38 Crores) was included as expenditure
Details 2014-15 2015-16

Analysis of Financial Results of 2014-15 & 2015-16
By removing the unusual items for the financial year
concerned
(Rs. in Crores)
Year 2014-15 2015-16
Net Profit 1579.68 1204.15
Deduct : Surcharge 345.57* -
Add : VR Compensation - 28.38 #
Add : loss due to rain - 409.73+
Effective Profit 1234.11 1642.26
* Surcharge is pertaining to previous years, not for 2014-15
alone.
# No Voluntary Retirement Compensation was paid
for 2014-15
+ No loss due to rain during 2014-15
By analyzing the data, one can infer that the performance
of NLC during 2015-16 is found to be better than 2014-15,
inspite of the damages caused by monsoonal rains.
NLC is planning to establish 4000 MW Solar Power energy
projects in line with the National Solar Mission announced by
the Government of India. In the Wind Power Project, it plans to
establish 251 MW. As a part of its mission, a 51 MW Wind
Power Project is established at Kazhuneerkulam Village,
Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, and till date 20 units of
1.5 MW each wind turbines have been commissioned.
On the Solar Power front, 10 MW Neyveli Project is already
generating power successfully, and the works on the 130 MW
Solar Power Project at Neyveli are underway. Similarly,
preliminary works are in progress for the 130 MW Solar Project
at Barsingsar, Rajasthan. Foundation stone was laid for a
20 MW Solar Power Plant and priliminary works are in
progress for a 30 MW Solar Power Plant in the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands. Moreover, NLC plans to join hands with State
Governments by participating in the Solar Power Parks
announced by the respective State Governments.
In the next phase NLC proposes to set up large scale Solar
Power Projects to the tune of 500 MW in the State of Tamil
Nadu. In order to spread out these projects in a fairly
distributive manner, the company is in the process of
identifying plain barren lands suitable for establishing
50-100 MW capacity in various districts of Tamil Nadu.
