2013 LADIES DAY vs. Eastern Districts

PRESIDENT’S REPORT During 2013 Brother Rugby Club continues to incrementally improve in many areas and in some areas 2013 can be viewed as a success while redoubled efforts will be required in others. Football The Club featured five teams in the finals series, including Premier Grade, and we congratulate the the Normanby Cup 1 team on their Grand Final success. While proud of this achievement, it is acknowledged that our supporters and the Rugby community generally rate success on the number of finals played in and the number of grand finals won and improvement is required if we are to achieve the high expectations we set for ourselves. We can however draw inspiration from:

the gallant effort of 2nd Grade to achieve grand final success – just falling short;

the marvellous effort of the Premier Colts and in fact all Colts sides during the year;

the competitiveness of our New Zealand tourists, achieving a clean sweep; and

the inspirational play of Premier Grade until personnel losses told against them and the overall effort of all players that finished the season of 2013.

Aside from the football this year ended 30 September 2013 has been quite momentous in many respects, as has been the period between that date and now. In many ways the future for Brothers will be dependent on our most recent decisions and those that confront the committee in the next month or two. Finances The financial position of the Club is relatively strong. Assisted by the great success of the Lions Test Lunch, continuing support of our sponsors, and the grant monies from the ARU, the Club has returned a profit and remains cash flow positive. All this despite significant financial outlays and unmet financial expectations in 2013 including an underfunded New Zealand tour, poor trading by the Fratelli Group and the installation of a grease trap. To this extent, I wish to acknowledge and thank Des Hogan for his financial stewardship, advice and whole-hearted effort to ensure the club prospers. Against that backdrop however, in the last few weeks, we have received information that will have a marked impact on next year. We received notice that the lease with Fratelli, already breached, will be terminated and advice that the ARU grant will, in all likelihood, be terminated in the next two years. Further it appears the ARU, despite the strong objection of the Clubs, will introduces an Australian Club Championship but probably under conditions that will make it unviable for all but a couple of Australian clubs. We will need to investigate whether we should, for the aspirations of our players and the positioning of the club in Australian Rugby, find a way to be involved in this poorly planned and researched initiative. The financial assistance received from sponsors ensures we continue to operate a football club and have resources to improve. Without this generosity the Club would not exist. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind one and all that without the continuous support of the contributing members of the Club (the players), we will struggle not only to raise the necessary monies to continue, but to also attract volunteers to act on committees and sub-committees. Management Structure The Committee undertook a review of the Club’s management structure in 2013. The current structure based on one full-time employee of the club assuming responsibilities for coaching at Premier level, Rugby development and club administration was determined to be ineffective. The Committee, based on the advice received, determined that the structure for 2014 and beyond should be renewed. A full-time employee will be engaged as a Director of Rugby and Administration and a part-time appointee be engaged as Premier Grade Coach.

Matt Kaye, who has done a sterling job during the two years he has been at Brothers, has accepted the full-time as Director of Rugby and Administration and Anthony Mathison (former Reds player, Wallaby tourist and assistant coach at GPS and University) has been appointed head coach, to be assisted by Carl Marshall (returning from a break from coaching at this level with Brothers). I express great admiration for the way in which Matt dealt with the change to the full-time role and his whole-hearted commitment to the still enormous task of management of the Rugby program and club administration. It is because of Matt's mature attitude to major change, and his commitment to seeing the change work, I can express optimism. I would like to thank Matt for the job he has done to make 2013 a success. The amount Matt gives of himself to the role is an inspiration to us on committee who see the hours and he gives every day of the week and the commitment he makes to the success of Brothers 2014 and Beyond The challenge therefore for 2014 is to deal with, the loss of at least $100,000 of revenue, the continuation of repair and improvement of club facilities, the necessary improvement of our Rugby program, including recruitment and retention to add depth and make the winning of the Dougherty Shield an achievement rather than a goal, the management of, and generation of revenue from, club premises, a firm agreement with the Juniors that will benefit both Clubs and the development of our place in the wider community. The lifeblood of any club are volunteers - committee, coaches, managers, fund-raisers, can-shop and barbecue stalwarts, medical staff and supporters. Thank you all for your efforts especially to those who turn up year after year. The financial assistance received from sponsors ensures we continue to operate a football club and have resources to improve. Without these generous benefactors, for that is what they are despite our efforts to provide value for the fee we extract, the club would not exist. Finally the supporters who give us the encouragement to continue to work to build the reputation of the Club; and the players, those who have just started on the journey as Brothers players and those who progress through the system, providing us, the spectators, with the enjoyment of sharing in their success and development. I cannot close without reminding one and all that the committee has a duty to ensure the financial success of the club and, whereas we try to raise money from commercial ventures, the fact is our opportunities and our resources of working capital and labour are such that commercial ventures are rarely providers of sufficient cash. We therefore do not apologise for asking current players, past players and supporters generally to assist us to raise sufficient money to ensure the survival of the club. Frankly it is disappointing that too often our requests for assistance are poorly supported by those who enjoy the clubs successes when they occur. Without generous support as contributing members the club will struggle not only to raise the necessary monies to continue but to also attract volunteers to act on committees and sub-committees.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

It certainly has been a long year, both on and off the field. While six teams performed well enough to reach the semi-finals, the club had an indifferent year in the post season with only one team tasting grand final success In summary:

Premier Grade, Premier Colts, 2nd Grade and both Normanby Cup sides progressed to the finals with Normanby Cup 1 winning the Grand Final.

Premier Grade dominated for much of the season however fell away at the end to be eliminated in the Minor Semi Final.

Premier Colts finished Minor Premiers before a heart breaking draw in the Preliminary Final saw them bow out of the competition a week earlier than expected; and

2nd Grade had to endure an extra time Preliminary Final to progress to the Grand Final; unfortunately a fresh Wests team proved too strong in the decider.

The Brisbane City Council (BCC) provided much needed resources to upgrade the facility including Green Shed Bar toilets, reinforcement of the Deck area overlooking the field, upgrade of the change rooms on Vic Walsh Oval and other general safety issues. The BCC has been very open to our concerns for the facility providing much needed direction when required. I would like to thank the support of our valued sponsors, whose assistance and contribution has helped the club provide very competitive teams, facility upgrades and allowed the continuation of the strong Brothers brand in the community. Special mention should go to our Platinum and Gold Sponsors Imagetec, McDonalds Northside, Rohrig, Audi Centre Brisbane, Ledwidge Electrical, Gordon Culpitt, Jim Gorman, Canterbury NZ, Junction Rd Physio and Ascot Plumbing Maurice Gibbs. Over the next 12 months it is important we continue to grow our sponsor base and provide greater return for our existing sponsors. Over the last 12 months we have conducted a number of fundraising initiatives most notably the Lions Legends Luncheon held in June. We also ran Brothers Golf Day, Annual Brothers Ladies Day, Corporate Tent Days, Brothers/University Luncheon and the inaugural Northside Sevens Tournament. Recently, a “200 Club Draw” in which a winner is drawn each month. We hope the 200 Club will go some way to filling the potential revenue gap left by the foreshadowed discontinuation of the annual ARU funding grant. Each event created a lot of interest however we must continue to increase the profile of our brand within the community to ensure a broader support base. The newly refurbished Green Shed Bar and Jacaranda Room allows the club to conduct functions and events for club members and the public. Engagements, Birthdays, Conferences and Meetings are now being held at the club in the various rooms providing an additional source of revenue. The working relationship with the Brothers Junior Rugby Club is currently very good as a result of consistent communication. Congratulations to the Juniors in acquiring the use of Windsor Park which will allow the club to continue to grow. I have recently accepted an invitation to assist the Juniors as their Director of Coaching which will hopefully increase the standard of coaching and player development resulting in high quality players progressing to the senior club over time. I would like to thank the Junior Committee for their support over the year. In 2014 we hope to re-engage with the community including the many local businesses in the area, as we strive to become the ‘Local Footy Club’ which everyone supports. It is important that the club continues to grow through the support of the Juniors and the community to ensure its longevity.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The Season of 2013 would see five teams make the finals, with only the Normanby Cup number one team bringing

home a premiership. (Unfortunately our two teams in this division squared off in the semi final)

The season kicked off with a group of young players and few old heads making a trip to New Zealand's South Island.

After a close win at Shark Park against the Dunedin Football Club the squad entrenched themselves in the local student

areas for which Dunedin is famous. We then headed north to Christchurch to assist The Christchurch Football Club

celebrate their 150 Year Anniversary. This was a fantastic opportunity to play against one of the oldest sporting clubs in

New Zealand and to play against a quality opposition that included NPC standard players. It also gave a youthful squad

a sobering experience of seeing a city destroyed by natural disasters literally being re-built from scratch. The hospitality

of both clubs was sensational and invitations were extended for return games in Australia. Thanks must be made to the

Committee who offered financial support to the tour and also to the tour members who assisted in the fund raising efforts

prior to and after the tour.

2013 saw one of the most exciting colts groups assembled at the club over the last 10 years. This translated into a

successful season with Premier Colts (Minor Premiers) unlucky to be knocked out in the semi finals after a draw against

Gold Coast and losing the match on a count back as the opposition scored the first try of the match.

The Colts day tradition continued with a special day when all colts’ teams played on Jack Ross oval and a tent for their

parents and friends assembled behind the posts at the Crosby Road end of the field. We also had a 'Lower Grades' day

where the 3rd and 4th grade teams played on the main field and organised a Safari Night in the clubhouse. (coinciding

with the second British and Irish Lions test in Melbourne)

The Grade players again fielded a full complement of teams with passion running deep throughout all the teams. Many

teams went on to make the finals with Premier Grade being knocked out in the semi-final and Division One, Second

Grade losing the grand final in a very tough and physical encounter against a determined Wests team. The other grades

while finishing strongly, failed to reach the finals.

Although there was some disappointment on the scoreboard, season 2013 saw a handful of milestones with Adrian

Dixon playing his 100th Premier Grade game and Nathanuel Gendle playing his 150th Premier Grade game.

Off the field the club was successful, from the Colts Day to the hugely popular Ladies Day, 'Op-Shop' night and Trophy

Night, which was held for the first time in my memory, outside of the club at the Port Office Hotel. The involvement and

support of the playing group, coaches, managers, club staff and supporters was excellent.

Personally, it has been an honour to be the Club Captain in 2013 and to join a long and distinguished list has been a

truly challenging and wonderful experience that has also proven to be very rewarding. I look forward to seeing the

younger players develop on and off the field with the guidance of the senior players.

I would like to make special mention of, and thank:

Matt Kaye and Anthony McDermott for their dedicated work in organising the tour.

Matt Kaye, again, for his tireless work and support of all players, coaches and managers; and

Last, but certainly not least all the players, coaches, managers and supporters for making 2013 a

memorable year. The club will go from strength to strength in 2014. With a large contingent of Colts gaining

Premier Grade experience in 2013 it will help their individual confidence and the depth of the club as they

enter the grades in 2014.

The season of 2014 will be challenging as we face a sea of changes at a club level and as a rugby community. However,

if we continue to stick together, look after our mates and put in our best effort on and off the field we can make the men

and women who have helped this great club over the last 108 years as well as young boys and girls of our junior club,

who are the future, proud of what we are doing.

The Premier Training Squad of 35 excited souls started back at Crosby Park the first week of January full of enthusiasm

for the 2013 season.

The pre-season trials saw the Premier Squad play fixtures against both GPS and Sunnybank. The week before Easter

however saw a 21 man squad of current and potential Premier Grade players head off to New Zealand on a

Development Tour. The Club was invited to take part in the Christchurch Football Club’s 150th Anniversary and was the

only international Club invited to take part in their week long celebrations.

With the assistance of our friends at New Zealand Marist an additional fixture against Dunedin RFC was also organised.

The tour was a great success for the Bhoys, will 19 out of 21 going on to play Premier Grade for the Club. The Tourists

also got to experience the joys of touring and seeing how others Clubs play and celebrate rugby.

Round 1 of the Queensland Premier Rugby season kicked off with a 51-3 win against Wests at Crosby Park and

reclaims the Pilecki-Shaw Cup. The game saw Michael Bond, Dean Cooper, Zac Harding, Jack Webby and Ernest

Suavai make their Premier Grade debuts for the Club.

The next two games for the Bhoys were on the road with dominant wins against Sunnybank 30-10 and Norths 44-20;

Harry Symes made his Premier Grade debut against Norths.

The winning streak continued when the Bhoys came back to Jack Ross Oval and dispatched the Gold Coast 41-5 with

Ben Sadrugu making his debut. Next stop was across the creek to Chipsy Wood Oval and another victory against

Souths 42-15 with London Wasp’s import Josh Thomas-Brown making his debut for the Club. Round 6 at Crosby Park

was another fantastic effort and a dominant win against the Sunshine Coast 58-12, with Premier Colts player Paddy

James coming on for his first cap in the top grade.

Round 7 at the Ashgrove Sports Ground was a top of the table clash which also marked the 100th Premier Grade game

for Adam Bennie. Although the Bhoys were keen to win it for our Club Captain a closely fought battle ended with GPS

victorious 6-10. Former Queensland player and current Premier Grade coach Shane Drahm also made his debut for the

Club.

The Bhoys bounced back from their first loss of the season with hard fought wins against Easts (28-22) where Dom

Shipperley made his come back from injury Against University (29-14) where Michael Bond continued his outstanding

form in taking out the Round 9 QRU ‘Musashi High Performer of the Week’ award

The 28 points to 11 win against Wests at Sylvan Road at the start of the second round was enough to retain the Pilecki-

Shaw Cup for 2013. The Wests game saw Clynton Knox making his Premier Grade debuts for the Club.

Club favourite Dallan Murphy and new bhoy Josh Thomas-Brown played their last games for the Butcher Bhoys after

they both took up professional Contracts with Rotherham Titians in the RFU Championship.

Back to back home games at Crosby Park saw the competition results shared, with the Bhoys going down to Sunnybank

14-24 and a dominant win against Norths 53-21 with Premier Colt’s players François Postal and Tom Moloney making

their “A” Grade debuts. This saw the Postal bhoys play together for the first time prior to Ted Postal’s last game for the

Club prior to taking up a professional contract with RC Narbonne in the FFR Rugby Pro D2. It was also Mitch Felsman’s

last game a after securing a professional contract with SU Agen in the FFR Rugby Pro D2.

The Bhoys looked to consolidate their position on the Hospital Challenge Cup table and headed down the M1 to take on

the Gold Coast and showed a dominant display 69-15 against the Breakers. They took this form into the game against

Souths and ground out an important win 29-20.

We hit the road again and went up the coast to take on the Sunshine Coast. With a 40 to nil score line it was the first

time this season the bhoys kept a clean sheet. Isaiah Mosese was promoted to “A” Grade from Premier Colts for his run-

on debut. This fixture was a great opportunity for the coaching staff to blood a number of Premier Colts players; Giles

Beveridge, Jack Payne, Sam Hyne and Henry Fitzgerald all making their debut.

The Round 16 Hospital Challenge Cup home game against GPS doubled as part of the Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

challenge match and was also the Welsby Cup Final for Champion of the 1st Round. The Premier Grade bhoys went

down to GPS 7-48, but thanks to the lower grades competing hard the 6 matches played on the day ended up 3 games

all. So thanks to bonus points GPS retained the 2013 Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield.

The penultimate round of the competition saw the Bhoys head across the creek to take on Easts at David Wilson Field.

Another poor performance saw the Bhoys go down to the Tigers 12-44 and the losing streak stretch out to 2. The

highlight of this match was that Brothers Stalwart; Nathanuel Gendle played his 150th Premier Grade game for the Club.

The Round 18 clash was the Club’s QRU Heritage Round fixture between Brothers and our oldest rivals University at

Crosby Park. Up for grabs Templeton-McLean Cup and thanks to the tight results between the top 4 teams in Rounds 16

& 17, the Keith Horsley Memorial Trophy for the Minor Premiership. A win would be good enough to take both pieces of

silverware and claim top spot leading into next week’s finals. In a spirited and tightly contested affair, the Butcher Bhoys

went down to Red Heavies by 15 points to 36. This loss meant that we finished 4th and would meet University in the

Minor-Semi Final week.

The Butcher Bhoys headed to Ballymore for the Minor Semi-final against University full of confidence and self belief after

finishing the season in 4th position with 13 wins and 5 losses. The Bhoys fought hard and the contest was very even but

in the end we just couldn’t get the result we dearly wanted and went down to the Red Heavies 26 points to 12. The

highlight of the game was when Club favourite Adrian Dixon took the field late in the game and claimed his 100th Premier

Grade cap.

A special note should also be made of James Colvin & Nathanuel Gendle who played in all 19 Premier Grade games of

this season’s campaign and to Adam Bennie & Adrian Dixon who joined the Brothers Centurions Club by playing their

100th Premier Grade during the season, well done Bhoys.

To Matt Kaye, Shane Drahm, Des Kissane, John Druery, Ian Astbury, Joel McPhee and Dr Kate Gazzard; thanks for

your patience, assistance, feed-back and good humour throughout the year.

To the 44 Players who played Premier Grade this year, thanks for your help, camaraderie, good humour and assistance

in making this season a most enjoyable one. I hope you take time to enjoy the fruits or your labour and look back with a

sense of pride on the season you all had.

Division One – 1st Grade

Brothers 1st Grade in 2013 had a mixed year in terms of results finishing 6th overall. A very exciting young group of

players that graduated from the colt’s side made up the majority of this year’s squad and with a small group of

experienced players the team bonded well to start off a tough campaign.

After early season wins notching up 100+ points in our first two games reality came crashing down with a very

disappointing loss to arch rivals North’s in the 3rd round. This loss was not about the effort of the playing group but more

a reflection of our head space before and during the game.

During the first round we lost a key player in Zac Harding at 5/8 and our captain and it was a loss that this young group

of players would have to overcome during the year. A couple more wins in the first round saw us sitting nicely in 4th spot

on the ladder at the halfway point of the season.

The second round of the draw started much the same way as the first round however we came up against a very

determined South’s side in round 14 at Brothers. Although all the attacking options at our disposal were thrown at

South’s for the entire 2nd half of the game, their defence held and we suffered a 15-5 loss. The next 3 games were

heartbreaking, including a defeat to Logan 14-10 despite a majority of field position and possession.

By the back end of the 2nd round it was obvious that our young playing group had started to fatigue both mentally and

physically, leading to some heavy losses to GPS and Easts which were not reflective of the season or our abilities but

rather a new young group still finding its way in a new competition.

Our final game of the year came at home against our old enemy University and despite going into the game as massive

under dogs and with University playing for a finals spot, Brothers came out and blew them off the park in what was our

best display of rugby all year. It was an encouraging yet sobering experience to finish the season on with many realising

with that performance the year that could have been.

This young playing group will take great benefit from the year, mentally and physically. At one stage the entire backline,

in addition to some members of the forward pack, was under 21 years old. This year’s result augers well for future years

highlights the importance the group sticking together and training hard.

Special thanks to Tim Grady and Pete Williams for coaching this year and we wish you all the best for the future.

Brendan Gabbett

Coach

Division One – 2nd Grade Grand Finalist

2013 was another well performed season for our 2nd Grade side. Congratulations to the players and coaches (Dave

Magoffin, Tim McKellar and Pete Petinari for all their hard work culminating in making the finals series again this year.

The team stepped up in the second round with good wins to make the knockout final against University. University had

beaten us in the last game and were no doubt confident of the win. However, they were just not ready for the Brothers

onslaught as we stepped up another level in the finals and dominated the game from the kick off to win 24-14.

This was followed with a magnificent win over a confident Sunnybank side to make the Grand Final. This was one of our

best 2nd grade finals performances over the last decade. The team performed with resilience and determination and

fighting back to 21 all at full time and then salvaging at 28-21 victory through a converted try and desperate defence.

We now faced the strong front running Wests side in the GF. Our Grand Final team was as follows:

1. George Moloney

2. Michael Duhig

3. Eric Teofilo

4. Sinavi Fonoti

5. Wayne Maki

6. Thomas Sayer

7. Simon Price

8. Georgdie Asprey (c)

9. Andrew Campbell

10. John Gabbett

11. Jackson Darby

12. Andrew Price

13. Henry Teofilo

14. Hugh Stitt

15. William Leal

In a hard fought game and with able support from Manuel Cole-Manolis, Dan Liddy, Mark Matthies, Tom Moloney and

Cameron Massie on the reserves bench. Wests proved too strong in defence and held out to win 23-14 in a fantastic

effort by our boys who gave everything in the last 15 minutes, attacking the Wests line to no avail.

Post game discussions with the opposing Captain/Coach revealed their awe of the effort by our team in being able to

turn in not one but two outstanding performances week on week. Hugh Stitt scored all our points with 1 try and 3

penalties.

A special thanks to all the reserves during the final series. A great season, hard work, great fun and camaraderie, I really

enjoyed the year and in 2014 we will be looking to go the next step and win the GF.

2013 CLUB NIGHT – Bellsy, the Doc & Benny

Division One – 3rd Grade

Season 2013 has been a difficult year for Brothers 3rd Grade, finishing 6th overall. The final standing was made all the

more difficult to accept as our stats show us ranked 4th through, offence, defence and scoring percentages. With no

fewer than 5 games where third grade received a bonus points for losing scoring margins of seven points or less we

were left to rue many opportunities that might have been.

Despite this, the team spirit was strong throughout the year with some notable talents coming to the fore. Individual

highlights in the forwards this year being lock/back row Phil Low who often doubled up playing 3rd and 4th grade games

(earning himself ‘Player of the Year ‘for 3rd Grade) in addition to a few new players adding great skill and depth to our

line up in South Africans, prop Devon Woodbourne and Number 8 Ross Evans. Other forwards to mention being club

stalwart Jimmy Vail and Freddy Topping who led by example and gave their all for the club.

In the backs again our regular scrum half Tegan Tombe earned Back of the year. Another new player new Fly half Taiki

Murakami from Japan showed great promise only to succumb to injury early in the season. ‘Mura’ returned to grades in

the final weeks of the season and impressed making starts for 1st grade. Young Dan McMahon scored 4 tries in the

season and also made starts for 1st grade.

Other backs to mention being young Charlie Tobin, Ben Doxey and American flyer Alex Lyles. It is encouraging to see so

many new faces at the club and hopefully we can retain these players for next year. A difficult season for 3rd grade, but

certainly one to bounce back from. Looking forward, player retention for 2014 will be key to providing consistency in the

grades and encouraging talent coming up from Brothers Colts for the 2014 season.

A big Thank you to coaches and managers Graeme Sylvester, Dave Magoffin and Sandy Prestedge for their invaluable

contributions with the squad this year.

Carl McHale

Coach

Division One - 4th Grade

The 2013 Brothers 4th grade season was a challenging period in many ways for both the players and coaching staff, with

the side finishing the regular season in 5th spot, a disappointing slip from the 3rd place finish the year before.

While 2013 posed many issues for fourth grade including player numbers and an alternate format meaning the team

played away from the rest of the club week in, week out there were some pleasing aspects of the season blended with

some real highlight. The boys should be very proud of sticking out the season and being competitive right through till the

end of the year. Special mention should be made of several 4th grade stalwarts who turned up consistently, including

Bobby Longtime, Tim Collyer, Paddy Bates, Paul Makene, and retiring captain (and best and fairest winner) Greg

Beaver.

Some playing highlights of the year included a come from behind win in round 11 over Sunnybank, with Tim Collyer

sealing the win with a 50 metre try on fulltime. A 4 point win over Easts in round 14 in addition to a very narrow loss to

the eventual premiers GPS in the final round 22-17 showed vast improvement in the teams performance and

demonstrated real achievement for the team that had come together earlier in the year..

For a coach, it was great to see the following during the year:

*Several new players came through 4th grade and showed some real heart and talent, with some going on to gain

experience with 3rd grade throughout the year. These players included Ross Evans, Andy Bowers, Alex Liles and Connor

Kech.

* A number of players from our 4th grade squad in 2012 progressed to higher grades, including Bill Leal playing in the 2nd

grade grand final, Jonathan Danaher playing 1st/2nd grade, as well as Phil Lowe, Michael Skinner, and Alistair Smith

amongst others playing regular 3rd grade games.

* It was refreshing to see many of the Friday night players as well as ex-club players returning for games when asked to

help out the club when faced with forfeiting games. Special thanks should go to Landis Condon and Michael Timmins for

regular backing up after playing the previous evening.

Overall the season was not as successful as hoped for, but the talent identified throughout the year stands the lower

grades in good stead for the following years.

John Burton

Coach

Premier Colts Minor Premiers & Preliminary Finalist

Although we did not achieve our ultimate goal of contesting and winning the Premiership, 2013 was a highly successful

year for Premier colts and the Brothers Rugby club. The final result did not reflect the effort and hard work which was

dedicated by coaches and players alike to this season.

The coaching and management staff placed a significant emphasis on recruiting in key areas to complement the existing

playing group remaining from 2012. A lot of hard work went into talent identification and recruitment and the club

endeavoured to forge stronger relationships with our feeder schools. A successful example of this was the Brothers

Lions Legends Lunch with thanks to Glenn Rohrig for sponsoring a table for us, representatives from Toowoomba

Grammar, Nudgee College, Gregory Terrace, St Patricks and St Pauls were able to all sit together with the Colts

Coaches enjoying the afternoon talking footy. The end result of this hard work was the introduction of some fantastic new

talent into the club, not only into Premier colts but the depth of talent across the three teams was significantly improved

compared to previous years.

Pre season was an anxious time as the coaching team sought to implement a new style of play, differing from previous

seasons. The playing group worked extremely hard, both on the field, and in the gym, giving themselves the best

possible chance at a successful season. By the start of the regular season the boys were champing at the bit; which was

demonstrated by the 133-3 tally (for and against) after the first 3 rounds. The highlight being a 65-0 romping of the pre-

season fancies Norths at Hugh Courtney Oval, blind side flanker Ben Hyne and Winger Charles Tenakanai among the

dominant performers.

After such a promising start, the loss in round 7 to sixth placed GPS was a wakeup call as we were beaten by

enthusiasm, smart tactics and possibly our own over confidence. This deflating loss prior to games against heavy

weights University and Easts could have easily derailed a lesser side, however with strong belief and work ethic the boys

bounced back with two fantastic performances toppling Easts 31-24 and competition favourites University 41-26. The

Win over the Tigers at Crosby Rd was an enthralling battle that came down to the wire, with Patrick James and Blaise

Hartley dominating the midfield and Michael Tweedy showing individual brilliance but also finishing one of the best team

tries of the year.

Brothers then went on to dominate the remaining rounds of the year without dropping another game, whilst also exacting

revenge on GPS 24-7 in a brutal display of tight five dominance . Front rowers Jack Cook, Tom Moloney and Francois

Postal were relentless at the tackle and the breakdown while the sky scraping second row pairing of Isaac French and

Jack Payne ran amuck both in the air and around the park.

At the end of the regular season Brothers claimed the clubs first Premier Colts Minor Premiership in a decade, finishing

13 points clear of second place. This is an achievement of which the boys and the club are extremely proud.

The finals series was a different level of rugby compared to the regular season but the team prepared well and went into

the Major Semi Final against University confident. This game was fiercely contested by both sides, as both teams traded

blows one scoring then the other. Half back Billy Thompson and hard-working back rowers Sam O’Rielly and Henry

Fitzgerald were Brothers best on the day. Eventually University capitalised on consistent field position and our mistakes

to take the game 24-19 in what was a disappointing loss for our boys.

This result forced Brothers into a Preliminary Final against 2012 Premiers Gold Coast. Unfortunately with the team

enjoying a comfortable lead well into the 2nd half, we took our foot off the pedal and Gold Coast roared back into the

contest. A Try after full time to the Gold Coast levelled the scores and as a result they were declared winners after

scoring the first try of the game.

The loss was devastating for the team and all involved at the time after what was such a successful and dominate

season. With the benefit of hindsight there were many lessons learnt by all that day which each player will no doubt

reflect upon and build on in the future. Underestimating your opposition and not playing the full 80 minutes being a key

lesson among the many. However, the loss did not take away from what the team achieved this year. We are extremely

proud of the group and their commitment and effort throughout 2013.

A big congratulations needs to go to Patrick James and Sam Hyne who were awarded Highest Try Scorer and Highest

Point Scorer respectively for the club, well deserved awards. Premier Colts were also awarded Team of the Year for

2013 which was fitting of the effort put in by the group. We also had a number of boys included in the Qld U20s squad for

2014 including Tom Moloney, Francois Postal, Jack Payne, Ben Hyne, Billy Thompson, Patrick James, Giles Beveridge

and Isaiah Mosese.

I would like to thank all the players, coaching staff, management and supporters for their efforts throughout the year.

This team has left a legacy for the club both culturally and in performance that the colts of 2014 can only aspire to

emulate.

Division One - Colts I

Season 2013 for Colts 1 brought with it a lot of excitement with visions of success. A large playing group throughout the

colts program ensured depth of talent and skill that would be vital to these visions by shaping our season as one for

success and glory. Unfortunately we fell ever so short, but on that note we had exceeded all expectation including

previous year’s achievements.

Pre-season started strong, all the boys ready to rip in and do the butchers stripes proud. Training sessions were tough,

both physically and mentally but as expected, the lads lifted to the challenge. As coaches we wanted to build a strong

team that stood fit, both mentally and physically to the challenges that the Colts 1 season would bring. The idea of being

a team that others clubs dreaded to play was our goal. As previous players of the club we wanted to set a standard,

Teams that come to Crosby to play Brothers would not get off lightly. This attitude shone bright throughout our trials as

we had some really good wins that carried forth into our season.

Our first challenge of the season was away to the Dragons, the boys stood tall and strong in wet slippery conditions to

deliver a strong demanding win, setting the standard for our season ahead. A few early season injuries to some young

promising players such as Elijah King presented opportunities for players such as Xavier Power to step up and bare their

talent.

As our season took shape so did the senior playing group, Dave Corbenici, Andrew Price, Jack Martin, Shane Hatton

and Ben Claxton under the leadership of Jake Gagel took our team from strengths to strength binding our team and

producing some great wins. Players such as Aiden Cairns, Nick Traves Jack Cause, Rubin Sullivan and Jeremy

Stevens stood up to assist and deliver some really strong performances.

A tight loss at Souths and a first half punishment by Uni at Uni shook our season midway through. Injuries to Xavier

Power and season ending injury to Jack Martin took its toll on the team slumping to consecutive losses. Our teams

desire to win along with some hard work and determination of the boys ignited our run into the finals.

A tight loss to Souths at Crosby in the second round was where the boys showed true grit. Nick Traves stood up and

took the reins in attack to nearly clinch a win, the belief was back. Sitting Tight at 4th position we needed to win. A hard

fought win against the Gallopers at Yoku Rd and finals football was becoming a possibility again. Without too much

excitement we still had to beat Easts at Bottomley Park to secure 4th spot. Having the likes of Giles Beverage and

Charles Tenekani in our squad bolstered our run to the finals. However we fell once again ever so short with a loss at

Easts. Our season now rested on the hopeful result of a win to GPS at home against Sunnybank. This was not the case

unfortunately ending our 2013 season.

A massive congratulations to our entire Colts 1 Squad, including the guys who sat around every Saturday to either run

water, run the line, reserve or heckle Haigy, we would not have been as successful as we were without the commitment.

A big thank you to Graeme Silvester who came down and assisted the team throughout the final parts of the season

Cheers G-ray.

Special mention goes to our trophy winners of 2013 Best Player David Corbenici, Best Forward Jake Gagel, Best Back

Andrew Price.

Thanks for a great year, see you all back down the club in 2014,

Blair Hart

Coach

Division One - Colts 2

This year saw the return of a Colts 2 team to Brothers. Unfortunately the club couldn’t secure permanent coaching staff

til after the season began which made for a disruptive start.

Big thanks to Denis ‘Rugby’ O’Rourke and Ben Jefferies who helped out in the early stages and were eventually joined

by Godfrey Esmonde. The guys that were part of the Colts 2 team throughout the year deserve a great deal of credit.

They showed great patience and adaptability, with washouts, field changes and opposition forfeits plaguing their year.

Special Mention is to be made of the trophy winners for 2013 Patrick O’Connor (Best Forward), Ben Gordon (Best Back)

and Sebastian Smeaton (Best Player)

Whilst it may not have been the biggest year on the field, the guys club spirit and sideline banter was a great addition to

the Colts program!

QSRU Division 5 - Normanby Cup (1) Minor Premiers & PREMIERS

2013 was most certainly the ‘Year of the Ant’. It seems like only yesterday that the extended FireAnt Squad descended

on the hallowed turf of Jack Ross Oval for Pre-Season training. From the outset it was abundantly clear that this year

had the makings of something exceptional.

Success in sport, like in life, can only be achieved through dedication, hard-work and some luck. As the saying goes

though; a real man makes his own luck. It is fair to say that such a remark sits well with the FireAnts of 2013.

The term ‘dynasty’ is something which is bandied around too often in contemporary society and it is fair to say is a

concept that some find difficult to carry. History is littered with teams of this nature;

St George Dragons of the 1960s;

Celtic Football Club of the 1970s and 1980s;

Brothers Rugby Club of the 1980s;

The Chicago Bulls of the 1990s;

to name but a few. There can be little doubt that the FireAnts now sit proudly amongst other great teams of this nature.

The record speaks for itself – Minor Premierships, contested Grand Finals and ultimately Premierships – theirs is a

record beyond peer at Brothers in recent years and 2013 saw the FireAnts getting back to do what they do best; winning

Premierships.

Buoyed with the camaraderie, success and mateship that can only grow and be fostered through years of ‘doing the hard

yards’ on the training pitch, the Ants of 2013 flung themselves into their endeavours bound together by their common

goal; excellence.

There is an old adage that exists around rugby clubs which is, whilst you cannot win competitions in February; you can

certainly lose them. It was with this thought at the precipice of their minds that the FireAnt Squad of 2013 turned their

mind to the tasks at hand of seeking back-to-back Premierships.

Premierships are the reason that we all participate in ‘the game they play in heaven’ but to have been to Eden and

tasted its fruit may be worse than never having been there at all. The off-season saw the FireAnts become active in the

player market. Regeneration of a squad is an essential element of success and is a necessary evil as retirements and

tough decisions are made. Star off-season recruit Dugald Asprey, back after a year’s sojourn, summed it up best when

he described the atmosphere back at his first pre-season training session as ‘electric.’

The well-known saying “success breeds success” could be no truer and the inclusion of Asprey was an enormous step in

improving the FireAnts hopes of retaining its title as ‘Champions’. Asprey’s performance for the FireAnts was ultimately

rewarded with selection in the Queensland side this year. However Asprey was not the only free agent the FireAnts were

able to recruit in the off-season draft. Luke Andrews, Nat “Simmo” Crain, Blake Field, Josh Leddy and veteran Cade

Elliott also joined the ranks and proved valuable pieces in the FireAnt puzzle.

The FireAnts were able to secure the support of the Queens Arms Hotel as the team’s major sponsor. It goes without

saying that the without the support of Chief Publican Chris Condo and his amazing staff the FireAnts would not have

been able to achieve the success that 2013 brought. Few of those who were present will ever forget the sight of ‘Condo’

skolling from the Premiership Cup.

The commencement of the season saw the FireAnts start with a flourish. The hard-work and physical gains developed

by the squad in the Pre-Season came to the fore early. To this end, Jackson Wall, Hugh “Buegz” O’Reilly Jonathan

“Bone Thug” McKellar and Andrew “Sauce” Elliott deserve special mention. And then of course there were the veteran

crowd favourites. Names like Nicholas Fluery, James Court, Blaine Miller, Sebastian Smith, James Harvey, Corbin Crain

and Tim “Cheese” McKellar need no introduction. Foundation FireAnts Fraser Bax and Tony Andrews were again

exceptional and to this end were awarded Best Forward and Best Back respectively. Andrews even went one step

further by winning the Chairman’s Perpetual Trophy for a player in a Grand Final, an award that is contested by all teams

at the club. We would like to particularly thank Bax and Andrews for their continued hard work not only with the team

itself but also with their involvement in grassroots rugby and the establishment of FireAnts community centre, ‘The Nest’.

So with the season underway, the FireAnts went about building a ‘fortress’ at Jack Ross Oval which was reflected in an

unbeaten start to the season from the side’s first 6 home starts. Back to back wins against Western Suburbs proved the

necessary starch for the side heading into the difficult representative season. It is true, that the retirement of some

players from representative football eased the burden on the squad however the squad suffered its usual ‘lull’ during this

period.

It was clear at this stage that something was needed to reinvigorate the squad. With this in mind it was decided amongst

the coaching staff and leadership group that something was needed to ‘spark’ things up. At 4.30 a.m. on a cold winter’s

Saturday morning the FireAnts, armed with swags and plenty of refreshments, embarked on an 8.5 hour drive to

Wilgunya, Dirranbandi in rural Queensland to ex-FireAnts player Benn Wilson’s country estate.

The atmosphere at Wilgunya was conducive to team-bonding and increasing team moral. This statement is not to

suggest that these elements were lacking but rather to highlight that sometimes in life we require direction to make us

realise the direction which we intend to head.

Ultimately the FireAnts reached the Grand Final with only one loss to their name. So with the stage set (another tough

encounter with arch rivals Western Suburbs), the FireAnts got to work. To say the atmosphere was spine-tingling would

be an understatement. Despite a spirited performance from West, the FireAnts were able to retain the Normanby Cup

with a 22-12 victory and a great team performance, that few of the 10,000 strong crowd will forget anytime soon.

The Brothers motto "facere et docere" to do and teach, embodied the playing group and staff throughout the entirety of

the 2013 season. Inspirational in blooding new talent over the past year with many colts, grades and new brethren

players asking to join the ranks for a shot at glory, the FireAnts have solidified themselves in BRC folklore. A real

champion team rather than the team of champions, everyone who stepped up to the plate this year embodied this motto

and gained a real sense of team spirit and unity.

For the players themselves, the idea of putting the blue and white on ever Friday night to do battle, floods the mind with

over a hundred years of brave brethren who have come before. It wasn't rare to see this emotion spill out on to the field

as we fought to make our own mark on history. The FireAnts look forward to a strong 2014 and issue this warning on all

opposition; be afraid.

QSRU Division 5 – Normanby Cup (2) Semi-Finalist

In March 2013 the call went out, training would commence the 2nd of April.

The mighty premiership winning Wyatt Cup team had been promoted to the Normanby cup comp.

Old battle scared forwards and baby faced backs, gathered at Crosby for the first training season.

12 times premiership winning coach, ‘Coach Price’ put the boys through a series of drills to assess their fitness and skill

level. Outcome - it would be a ‘tough’ year! The beep test lasted 1 minute 52 seconds before we realised no-one was still

competing. With over half the forward pack looking like they had swallowed a sheep or 2 in the off season and many of

the memories of last season’s GF still vivid, we were aware there was a lot of work to be done.

Coach Price said he could see a hunger in their eyes, I just thought they were hungry!

At our first game, one of the forwards made the observation that “if we scored more points than the opponents we would

win” (yep rocket scientist) so that’s what we did - 21 to 15 and we had our first win. With another 4 wins on the trot just

by scoring more points than our opponents the season was really starting to come together.

The 7th may 2013 will go down as one of the darkest days in rugby. The Battle of Crosby - this just wasn’t mate vs

mate, but Abel and Cain stuff, brother vs. brother, tearing into each other no quarter asked and none given. As the dust

settled the 2012 Premiership winning Normanby cup team had just got over the top of us.

Nine wins and six losses placed us 4th on the ladder in a knock out semi against Brothers 1. In a hard fought game

Brother 1 came from behind to beat us 19 to 14 but we left with our heads high knowing we could compete at the higher

level.

We would like to thank the Friday night team sponsors including Mctel, Watt Realty, Ramsay Plumbing and Drainage

and Colwell Lyons. Thanks also to the supporters that come down to each game and provided the team with the much

needed encouragement from the sidelines.

To coach Price who has retired from coaching again “you’re a very special man”.

Ball boys, water boys, linesman, strappers, unstrappers and esky fillers, thanks.
