Entrepreneurship Cooperative Project

• As part of this program, the Electrical students will be involved in the design and manufacture of printed circuit boards utilizing high intensity LED’s.

• These circuit boards will be part of custom billet aluminum tail light housings that will that are being built by Eckcraft metal arts in Binghamton, New York. These tail lights will be used on custom one of a kind motorcycles.

• The object of the technical entrepreneurship program is to expose students to fundamental entrepreneurship skills and principles.

DALE EARNHARDT

The first project was for a tail light honoring NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt.

The First Prototype

This tail light had to be in the shape of the number 3. We needed to determinehow to arrange the LED’s to fill the available space. We started with a piece of perf board to get an idea of the necessary layout.

Printed Circuit Board Layout

To place the LED’s exactly where we wanted them to be, we used AutoCAD to lay out the printed circuit board.

How do you make a circuit board in the shape of a 3?

Page 12: Broome Community College Binghamton, New York Electrical Engineering Technology Welcome Back! We have some really exciting projects in the works. Stay.

VERY CAREFULLY!

That’s more like it…

Lots of hand filing to get it right.

SPEED Channel Project

• The Speed Channel will be filming a series of shows on building a custom motorcycle.

• This series will be aired on the 2 Wheel Tuesday show.

• The EET Department at BCC built the circuitry for the tail light for this project.

Design and Fabrication

As part of the Technical Entrepreneurship Program, in the Spring 2005 semester the students in EET 230, the design and fabrication course, will design circuit boards for tail lights that Eckcraft is building for Orange County Choppers. One of these lights will be used on an F22 Raptor theme bike that OCC is building for the United States Air Force. The creation of this bike will be featured on episodes of American Chopper on The Discovery Channel.
