TEXAS TECH RED RAIDER BASEBALL

FIRST PITCHTexas Tech hosts the third-annual Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic Friday, Feb. 24-27, while No. 18 St. John’s and Northern Illinois travel to Lubbock. The classic was named in honor of former Red Raider player and coach Brooks Wallace who died tragically at the age of 27 (March 24, 1985) after an on-going bout with leukemia. Wallace, a four-year standout at short-stop for Tech (1977-80), had a .289 career batting average with 153 hits, 23 doubles, 14 home runs and 97 RBI. Texas Tech will play five games this weekend through Monday, while taking on St. John’s twice and Northern Illinois three times.

SCOTT LeJEUNE- LeJeune led Tech batting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles and four RBI last weekend. LeJeune is currently the Big 12’s active career leader with 44 doubles, which ranks seventh all-time at Texas Tech. LeJeune is approaching a career milestone as he enters the weekend with 99 career RBI. Once reaching 100, he would be the 12th Tech player during the past decade to reach 100 career RBI.

Dan Spencer is 89-87 overall and 37-44 in Big 12 play in four seasons as head coach of the Red Raiders. Named the eighth head coach in Texas Tech history during the summer of 2008, Spencer has wasted no time rebuilding the Tech program. Spencer has led Texas Tech to 86 wins since taking over as head coach in 2009, and this past season guided his program to 33 victories - the Red Raiders most wins in a season since 2005. Included in Spencer’s success as the skipper have been 24 victories against nationally-ranked op-ponents, a 56-30 record at Dan Law Field, three consecutive seasons with an increase in wins (25 in 2009, 28 in 2010, 33 in 2011), winning 13 conference series and mentoring 19 players since joining the Tech program as associate head coach in 2008 that have been drafted or signed free agent in the Major League Baseball Draft. In fact, five of Spencer’s 19 draft picks have been taken in the top-10 rounds.

The Red Raider faithful have also taken notice of Spencer’s guidance to the program as Tech ranked 24th in the nation in 2011 averaging 2,771 fans per game. The Red Raiders average attendance marked the program’s fifth highest all-time and the highest since 2002. Spencer has led Tech to three consecutive appearances at the Big 12 Championship, something that hadn’t been done at Tech since 2004-06. Spencer’s 86 victories in three seasons at Texas Tech rank second all-time among Red Raider head coaches during their first three seasons at the helm (Larry Hays - 1987-89, 87 wins). In addition, Spencer recorded his 50th career home win in 74 tries, which made him the fastest Texas Tech head coach ever to win 50 career home games (previous mark set by Kal Segrist - 76 games). The Red Raiders never-say-die attitude under Spencer has led them to 43 come-from behind wins under Spencer in three seasons. On the other side of things, Texas Tech has been nearly impossible to defeat with a lead late in the game with a 78-1 record under Spencer when holding a lead after eight innings. The 2011 season saw many highlights for Spencer and the Red Raiders, among them were winning on the road and during the midweek. Tech went 11-3 during midweek competition and won 10 road games, the program’s most since 2001. In fact, Texas Tech swept three midweek road/neutral site series which set a new school record. Spencer has never avoided playing strong competition. The past two seasons the Red Raiders have played 45 games against ranked opponents. In 2011, Texas Tech led the league playing 20 games against ranked programs during the regular season. The previous year the Red Raiders took the field 25 times against ranked foes. Accolades came pouring in for the Red Raiders in 2011 while four players were named to five national award watch lists, including National Pitcher of the Year (RHP John Neely), Midseason Stopper of the Year (RHP John Neely), Johnny Bench Award (C Bo Altobelli), John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year (RHP/OF David Paiz) and Brooks Wallace Award (SS Kelby Tomlinson). Neely went on to earn All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and from CollegeBaseballInsider.com while Tomlinson became the first Big 12 Conference player ever to be awarded the American Baseball Coaches Association Rawlings Division I Gold Glove Award (SS). Spencer, 46, rejoined the Texas Tech Baseball family on July 2, 2007 when he was named associate head coach on the staff of former head coach Larry Hays. He spent the 2008 season in that role where he coached the pitchers and catchers and headed Tech’s recruiting front. His 2008 pitching staff produced two top-10 round MLB draft picks in juniors Zach Stewart and James Leverton, both of which had never been drafted prior to that season. Stewart was taken in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds while Leverton was taken in the eighth round by the Chicago Cubs. Prior to his arrival at Texas Tech, he spent 11 seasons at Oregon State, the last three as associate head coach, where he served as pitching/catching coach and recruiting coordinator. His pitching staffs during the last two seasons of his Oregon State tenure were instrumental in helping the Beavers become the first back-to-back College World Series Cham-pions since LSU in the late 1990s. In those two seasons, his staffs compiled 3.41 and 3.48 cumulative ERAs while leading the team to 50-16 and 49-18 respective records. His group led the Pac-10 in ERA in both 2005 and 2006 while his bullpen helped pave the way to consecutive national titles by contributing 20-plus saves in both 2006 and 2007. Under his leadership, the Beavers had three pitchers and one catcher named to All-America teams and seven play-ers drafted in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Eddie Kunz, the ace of the 2007 staff, and catcher Mitch Canham, the squad’s leading hitter, were both first round draft selections in the 2007 MLB Draft. His collegiate coaching career began at the junior college level six years before arriving at Oregon State, as he landed his first job as an assistant coach at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash., in 1991. After just one season in Tacoma, he picked up his first head coaching position as he took over the program at Green River Community College in 1992. While at Green River, he compiled a record of 131-67 between 1992 and 1996.

THIRD-ANNUAL BROOKS WALLACE MEMORIAL CLASSICTexas Tech will host its third-annual Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic (Feb. 24-27) this weekend at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders are a combined 6-3 in the classic during the past two seasons. Last season the Red Raiders welcomed BYU and Northern Illinois while in the initial classic in 2010, Bethune-Cookman and Washington State made the trip to Lubbock. ST. JOHN’S ALL-TIME SERIESTexas Tech holds a 5-0 lead in the all-time series against St. John’s, which dates back to 1994. Only one of the meetings has not been played at a neutral site. The most recent meetings came in Midland, Texas, in 2007 when the Red Raiders defeated the Red Storm 10-6 and 7-5 on Opening Weekend. Once Tech/St. John’s have played in Lubbock (2006) when the Red Raiders defeated St. John’s 5-4. The first two matchups in the all-time series were 2-0 shutouts for Tech back in 1994.

TEXAS TECH VS. THE BIG EAST CONFERENCETexas Tech is 10-3 all-time against opponents from the Big East Conference. The Red Raid-ers’ most frequent opponent besides St. John’s (5-0 all-time) is Seton Hall, who Tech is 3-2 against. Besides Tech’s games against St. John’s in 2007, its most recent opponent is Notre Dame, who the Red Raiders lost to on a neutral field (Round Rock, Texas) in 2004 (1-6).

NORTHERN ILLINOIS ALL-TIME SERIESTexas Tech owns an 11-2 all-time record against Northern Illinois, with a 9-2 record against the Huskies in Lubbock. One of the Red Raiders most frequent non-conference opponents over the past eight years, Tech has played NIU in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and last season. Tech has won five straight in the series, with the Huskies last win coming in 2007 in Lubbock (8-5). Two of the meetings - both wins for Tech - were played in San Marcos back in 2008 (11-5 and 8-5).

TEXAS TECH VS. THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCETexas Tech is 24-2 all-time against Mid-American Conference opponents while both losses have come against Northern Illinois. Texas Tech is 1-0 against Akron, 6-0 against Eastern Michigan, 5-0 against Miami (Ohio) and 1-0 against Western Michigan.

NINE-GAME HOMESTANDTexas Tech opens the season with a nine-game homestand that covers the February portion of its schedule. It marks the fourth consecutive season that the Red Raiders have opened their scheduled with at least a six-game stint at home. Last year the Red Raiders began the season with a school-record 18-game homestand (12-6 record). So far the Red Raiders are 3-1 during their initial homestand of the season.

TAKING A LOOK BACKThe Red Raiders opened the season 3-1 with a victory over No. 31 Missouri State (4-1) and a pair of wins against Tennessee Tech (9-5 and 8-0) in the Red Raider Classic. Tech’s only loss of the opening weekend came in the classic finale against Missouri State (2-4).

ON THE HORIZONTexas Tech will hit the road for the first time this season with seven consecutive games away from Rip Griffin Park, starting with three neutral site games at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park - the home of the Houston Astros. Tech will play against No. 4 Arkansas (3/2 - Noon), No. 5 Rice (3/3 - 7 p.m.) and Houston (3/4 - 2:30 p.m.).

LeJEUNE & BARNES CHASING CAREER 100-RBI MILESTONEA pair of Red Raiders are looking to join the Texas Tech career 100-RBI club as both Scott LeJeune (99 RBI in 115 games) and Barrett Barnes (95 RBI in 118 games) are nearing the milestone. JOHN NEELY ENTERS THE GAME = OPPONENT POWER OUTAGETexas Tech All-American closer John Neely has pitched 67.2 consecutive innings without allowing a home run, which includes his last 32 appearances. The streak dates back to March 26, 2010 against No. 8 Texas (DH Kevin Keyes led off the top of the fourth with a solo HR to left-center field in Lubbock). In fact, Neely became the first Red Raider pitcher in over 16 years to not allow a home run during a season (min. 25 IP) in 2011.

McCRUMMEN HASN’T WALKED A BATTER SINCE APRIL 13, 2011Texas Tech junior RHP reliever Jerad McCrummen has not allowed a walk in 11 consecu-tive appearances - which covers his last 10 innings pitched out of the bullpen. McCrum-men made his debut season with the Red Raiders last season and finished the year making 26 appearances, marking the second most all-time by a Red Raider pitcher in their debut season.

Back in 2010 - the first year of the classic - Shellhorn started against the Red Raiders for Washington State on Sunday, Feb. 28. Shellhorn and the Cougars defeated Texas Tech 10-7 while Shellhorn didn’t figure in the decision he struck out six in four innings of work.

BROYLES/SHELLHORN MAKE IMPRESSIVE DEBUTSA pair of juniors - RHP Shane Broyles and LHP Rusty Shellhorn - made their Texas Tech de-buts on Opening Weekend while both made impressive starts. Broyles (transferred from Seminole State) pitched 7.1 innings while allowing five runs (4 ER) on six hits with six strikeouts and didn’t allow a walk. It marked the first time since 2008 (RHP Nathan Karns, 7 SO vs. Oral Roberts) that a Red Raider had struck out at least six in a career (starting) debut. The following day Shellhorn went seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Shellhorn became the first Red Raider in over 11 years to pitch seven scoreless innings in his Texas Tech starting debut.

TECH NOTCHES FIRST ONE-HITTER IN OVER 11 YEARS ON OPENING DAYRHP Duke von Schamann and RHP Trey Masek combined for a one-hitter on Opening Day in Tech’s 4-1 win over No. 31 Missouri State. von Schamann started and went seven innings (1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) while Masek pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts to earn his first career save. Last season the Red Raiders had three pitchers combine (Coulombe, Brennan Stewart, Neely) on a two-hit shutout on Opening Day against Western Michigan (8-0).

PROUDFOOT EARNS RED RAIDER CLASSIC MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYERFreshman SS Tim Proudfoot was named the Red Raider Classic’s Most Outstanding Player while batting .429 (6-for-14) with three runs, two triples and six RBI while leading all play-ers at the classic with 17 assists from the shortstop position. Proudfoot began his career with three straight multiple RBI games, including hitting a two-run triple on Opening Day to give Tech a three-run cushion they would hold against Missouri State (4-1).

TEXAS TECH FRESHMEN EXCEL ON OPENING DAYFreshman SS Tim Proudfoot not only had a standout opening weekend, he continued what has seemed to be a consistent trend over the last several years from Texas Tech freshmen on Opening Day - he got a pair of RBI. EIGHT TEXAS TECH PLAYERS NAMED TO RED RAIDER CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAMTexas Tech won the Red Raider Classic with the best record (3-1) among the field of competition. Tech ended the Red Raider Classic with eight players being named to the All-Tournament team. Joining SS Tim Proudfoot - who was named the Most Outstanding Player - was C Bo Altobelli, 1B Scott LeJeune, 2B Jamodrick McGruder, 3B Reid Redman, CF Barrett Barnes, SP Duke von Schamann and SP Rusty Shellhorn.



TEXAS TECH ON OPENING DAYWith its 4-1 win over No. 31 Missouri State, Texas Tech improved to 40-23 on Opening Day, which includes a 13-1 record since 1999. Fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer has led Tech to four consecutive wins on Opening Day, including an 8-0 shutout over Western Michigan last season. It marked Tech’s first shutout on Opening Day since a 21-0 victory over How-ard on Jan. 26, 2001. Overall, the shutout was just the fifth all-time for the Red Raiders on Opening Day (1966, 1986, 1993, 2001, 2011). Texas Tech’s only loss over the past 12 years on Opening Day came against then-No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette, 0-4, at the Roadrunner Classic in San Antonio on Feb. 23, 2008.

OPENING DAY IN LUBBOCKTexas Tech has been nearly unbeatable when hosting Opening Day on their home turf with a 27-5 all-time record. The Red Raiders have won 13 straight Opening Day games at home, dating back to a 1-10 loss against TCU (2/11/97). In fact, since 1986, Texas Tech is 19-1 on Opening Day in its home ballpark. This year marked Tech’s fourth straight Opening Day at home.

DAN SPENCER IN SEASON OPENERSTexas Tech has won four consecutive Opening Day games under head coach Dan Spencer. Spencer has become just the second head coach in Texas Tech history to win four consecutive Opening Day games. Spencer joined Kal Segrist who won a school-record five consecutive Opening Day games to begin his 16-year tenure as head coach of the Red Raiders.

COMING OUT RUNNIN’Once again the Red Raiders came out running on Opening Day with four stolen bases against Missouri State. The past four Opening Day games the Red Raiders have 19 stolen bases.. In 2009, the Red Raiders swiped six bases (Rueda 3; Reed 2; Kenworthy) against Southern Utah, in 2010 Tech grabbed five stolen bases (Barnes 2; LeJeune, Mayo, Hagen) and last season Tech notched four stolen bases (Popescu 2, Redman, Tomlinson) and this season Tech posted four against Missouri State (Altobelli 2, Barnes, Moore).

BARRETT BARNES CONTINUES OPENING DAY SUCCESSJunior Barrett Barnes continued his success on Opening Day as he went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and stolen base. Barnes is now 6-for-10 on Opening Day with five runs, two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and three stolen bases.

TEXAS TECH RETURNS 19 LETTERWINNERSThe Red Raiders return 19 letterwinners from last year’s team, giving them back a high percentage of nearly every of-fensive and pitching category. Overall, Tech returns eight position players who started at least 32 games and 10 pitchers who threw at least 20 innings last season. JOHN NEELY & BARRETT BARNES RECEIVE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORSTexas Tech has had two players show up consistently in preseason All-America teams as senior RHP closer John Neely and junior CF Barrett Barnes have combined for six preseason All-American accolades. Neely, a third team All-America selec-tion last season by the NCBWA, has earned preseason honors from NCBWA (second team) and College Baseball Insider (second team). Barnes has picked up four preseason All-America awards from Baseball America (third team), Perfect Game (third team), College Baseball Insider (honorable mention) and College Sports Madness (fourth team). In fact, Barnes has collected a total of 22 preseason awards from numerous media outlets and publications.

RED RAIDERS SHUTOUT TEXAS TECH ALUMS, 6-0Texas Tech newcomer RHP Shane Broyles dominated in the third-annual alumni game as he tossed 4.1 perfect innings with eight strikeouts to lead the current Red Raiders over their alums, 6-0, on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Texas Tech improved to 3-0 all-time against its alumni. The alumni team did feature 11 players who had been drafted with four All-Americans. Freshman shortstop Tim Proudfoot led all hitters going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Four Red Raider pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters while allowing just two walks and gave up just one base hit.

RED RAIDERS ON THE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLLThe Texas Tech baseball program had 18 student-athletes who received academic honor roll status following the fall semester. Nine Tech players earned Dean’s List status (3.50-4.00 GPA) while three Red Raiders recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.
