Brookings High School
Brookings High School needed a new kitchen and cafeteria, improved theater, school office and guidance areas and a recognizable front entry.
Together these needs presented an opportunity to create an enhanced sense of place for the school. Working with the building committee, a network of gather-ing and circulation spaces is established to link and highlight key public areas - cafeteria, office, guidance, theater, gymnasium and library.

A new entry and commons establish a memorable new image and a clear sense of arrival. The cureved forms are welcoming and contemporary. A substantially more secure environment is created while making the schools’ most important gathering area more accessible, functional, flexible and attractive.

Renovated are the existing auditorium, administration and guidance areas. The existing cafeteria becomes a shop and a green room to serve the auditorium.

Brookings High School
The new Main Street transforms a typical high school hallway into an active, dynamic space, promoting interaction of stu-dents during the day and the community at other times.
Using new floor and ceiling finishes, improved lighting and distinctive“facades”for the theater, gym and library, key public spaces are highlighted and way finding is made intui-tive.
Tying it all together is a ribbon that shifts height to become a threshold, doorway, counter or seat, as needed.
