The big five. These five materials are often mistakenly put in the Blue Box and cost time, money, and valuable resources to sort and process. For more information on why StyrofoamTM, paper coffee cups, paper towel, plastic bags and film, and chips bags/wrappers are not accepted in the Blue Box, visit dufferincounty.ca/waste
Placing compostable materials loose in the Green Bin, with no liner at all, is acceptable. Keep in mind that food may freeze to the bottom and the container will need to be rinsed out more often.
Wrapping compostable materials in newspaper or paper bags will absorb moisture, reduce odours and pests, and prevent materials from freezing to the bottom of the Green Bin in the winter.
Using certified compostable bags in the Green Bin or kitchen collector will minimize odours, insects and leakage. The bags must have either logo (shown here) to be accepted.
Plastic bags (clear green plastic bags, shopping bags, garbage bags, etc.) are not permitted and will not be collected. However, another option is to duct tape a plastic bag into the Green Bin, so that it does not come out of the bin when the contents are collected.
Options to line the bin

Limit of
the big five.
Styrofoam.
coffee cups.
paper towel, napkins, & facial tissues.
plastic bags & film.
chip bags, candy & fast food wrappers.
Coffee cups have a plastic lining inside that is not easily separated from the paper, so this item goes in the garbage.
Styrofoam, or polystyrene, is a #6 plastic. There is a limited market to sell this product, so it goes in the garbage.
Place them in your Green Bin where they can be composted.
Chip bags and wrappers of any kind belong in the garbage.
#?
Is your plastic container recyclable in Dufferin? Not all plastic is the same, so not all of it is accepted in the County’s recycling program. You can tell what kind of plastic it is by finding the number inside the recycling symbol on the material.
If you can’t find a number on it, place it in the garbage. Please remember to rinse any containers before you recycle!
#1-5, 7 = Recyclable#6, no #, or plastic bags & film = Garbage
ALL plastic bags, overwrap packaging, and air pillow packing, also known as film, are problematic to recycle and are NOT accepted in Dufferin County’s program. These items go in the garbage.
