Wood Mackenzie, a global energy consulting firm from the UK, forecasts global LNG supply will grow by 7% in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Our Korean shipyards have received 135 slot reservations for LNG carriers from Qatar, received two orders for large LNG barges alongside 10 LNG carriers from Russia, 17 slot reservations for Total S.A.’s Mozambique vessels. As such, the tides are turning for dock reservations of our Big 3 shipyards.

Clarksons Shipping projects total orders of 500 LNG carriers to be commissioned until 2027, with an-nual orders amounting to as little as 41 to 80 orders per year, and Poten and Partners, US-based ship brokerage firm expects orders for LNG propulsion vessels will amount to 2,500 to 3,000 for the next ten years, until 2029. Some predict that over 50% of those 3,000 orders will be commissioned in Korea.

The reason being, the orders are focused on large ships over 100,000㎥ and a huge technological gap exists between competitor nations and Korea for such vessels. Industry specialists believe that dock reservations for LNG vessels will be funneled in from general shipping companies (containers, tankers, etc.) seeking to secure a dock reservation in Korea. As a result, there is much talk that the shipbuilding industry will soon experience another booming period comparable to the early 2000s.
