now brings yo Zero, the patented brick witha joint-free loo that an be laid in the traditional

manner with mortar and trowel.

Zero bris have a speial reess on the top into

whih mortar an be applied in the traditional way.

Moreover, the ratio between the length and width of

the bri is ideal for laying bris in a half-bri bond.

This lever design means that Zero bris an be

A FEW mORE TIPS,AND YOURE READY TO START

Whether you opt for Zero or

gluing, joint-free brickwork

always needs a bit more care

than traditional brickwork.

After all, the reduced joint-

width makes it difficult to

correct things later. Here are

some important points to bearin mind:

Lay the bris ot first to deter-

mine the average length of the

bris and the average width of

the joints.

Yo need a speifi type of mortar

with enhaned adhesion.

The Zero bri has to be tilted

when laid. Press the front of the

bri onto the previos orse

and then slowly pt into plae

woring from front to ba in

a tilting motion, while the mortar

is pressed down.

If Zero briwor is orretly

laid there will be a lot less mortar

visible than in the ase of lassi

briwor. Nevertheless, an n-sitable mortar olor will spoil

the effet. To ahieve a niform

appearane yo shold se

mathing mortar (e.g. red mortar

with red faing bri). However,

yo an also se a darer mortar

to enhane the shadow-effet

of the joint.

FAQ

Do I have to use a specific

masonry mortar with Zero?

Yes, yo do. Yo need a mortar that

garantees good adhesion. For this

reason we reommend that yo

se ready-mixed mortars speially

designed for this type of briwor.

a ross test or a 1-minte test.

Can rain get through the

open lap-joints?

No. This also applies to gled

faades. Varios tests have shown

that 4 mm open joints do not let

rain throgh. Frthermore, faing

bris absorb rain water bease

of their poros strtre. They will

also dry ot qier thans to the

open strtre of Zero walls.

A joint-free faade is ths every bit

as rainproof as a faade with joints.

Do I need more bricks per m?

Yes, yo do. In joint-free briwor

the faing bri plays a more

prominent role. The joints are

narrower and the length of

the bri is adapted aordingly.

Yo will need abot 90 bris

per m.

How much mortar will I need?

Mortar onsmption is abot 30

g/m, depending on the brilayer,

of orse.

Should I use a coloured mortar?

This is a matter of personal taste.

However, an nsitable mortar

olor an spoil the effet, even

thogh there is very little mortar

visible if Zero briwor is laid

orretly. To ahieve a niform

effet we reommend singa mathing olored mortar

(e.g. red mortar with red bri).

Alternatively, however, yo might

hoose a darer mortar to enhane

the shadow effet of the joint.

Many mortar manfatrers offer

a range of olored mortars that

are espeially designed for

joint-free briwor. For more

With Zero is there a greater

risk that insects, such as bees

or wasps, can get through

the open lap-joints and nest

in the cavity?

No. In fat, the opposite is tre.

The open lap-joints are only

4 mm wide, whih is too narrow

for them to penetrate. Frther-

more, bees and wasps dont lie

open and ventilated environments.

COLOURFULTECHNIQUES

Zero bris are laid sing the joint-freemethod. However, yo an also se ortraditional bris. These an be either gledor laid with thin bed mortar. The advantage:

Gle or thin bed mortar:the hoie is yors

When bris are glued the traditional mortar is replaed

by a gle mortar whih is sprayed onto the bri srfae sing

a pmp or a spray gn. This tehniqe an re- de the jointwidth to about 4 mm.

Thin bed mortar is half-way between a mortar and a gle.

It is cheaper than gling, bt the joint-width an only be

reded to around 6 mm.
