    OLAER WIND POWER | Accumulators

    Olaer Ltd.

    Mike Blenkinsop

    Chief Executive

Olaer is a global player specialising in innovative, efficient system solutions for temperature optimisation and energy storage.

All over the world, our products are working in the most diverse environments and applications.

A world leaderin Fluid Energy Management

Wind Power is a key focus area for our company and we are proud of our long heritage and strong capability that we

have developed over the years in this sector. So much so, that we felt we needed to produce a specific document that

demonstrates to the market what we have achieved so far and to show that we can deliver a truly unique offering to

    our customers.

Olaer is a world leader in Fluid Energy Management producing accumulator and cooler

products. We are focused on our component specialities, not on becoming a systems

integrator or field servicing company. We are proud of the fact that we respect our

customers business and that our people behave with a high degree of integrity. We can be

    your trusted partner.

We are capable of producing highly engineered customised solutions in the

most demanding applications and are confident that with our local presence,

long experience and wealth of knowledge combined with our leading edge

product offering, that we can give you the best possible conditions for

    making the professional choice.

Accumulators are used for applications within the hub

and the nacelle of the wind turbine. The demands that are

placed on the product are distinctly different depending

on the location and the application requirements.

One thing is common to both, however, and that is

the criticality of reliability and product lifetime, as

unscheduled maintenance is normally very expensive

due to the costs associated with system downtime,

the need for skilled technicians, the location of the

turbine itself and the fact that the nacelles can be up to

    100 meter high!

Whether you are a manufacturer or involved in field

servicing of turbines, we recommend that you talk to

your local Olaer representative so that you use only

products that are truly suitable for the application,

as these costs far outweigh the unit price of any

    component or spare part.

Up where we belongWe have the experience and the know-how

Olaer has supplyed coolers to the wind power industry since the early days, constantly working with our customers to develop our knowledge

of this extremely demanding industry. We have the proven development and supply chain capabilities to deliver these products worldwide,

with key customers in Europe, the United States and in Asia, where we also have development and production units.

Olaer is able to support us in all of our local developments. Their people are there when we need them and they can respond quickly with technical proposals and prototypes.

    OLAER WIND POWER | Accumulators

Its tough at the topIn general, accumulators that are used in the nacelle are

static, which means that relatively standard products are

often appropriate, as the application is similar to those

found in standard industrial fields. Often however, there

are demands in terms of cleanliness, temperature or

corrosion resistance which mean that products of higher

    specification need to be used.

OLAER EHV Bladder accumulatorBladder accumulators are the predominant technology

being used today when accumulators need to be

    >10 litres in size, whether in the hub or the nacelle.

They are ideal when price, space or weight is at a

premium. Visually similar to standard accumulators,

they are very different and specifically designed for use

in this application, where especially in the hub of the

wind turbine the use of standard industrial accumulators

will certainly lead to premature failure in the field.

OLAER VGU Charging assemblyThe universal charging assembly is used to charge the

accumulators in a safe and accurate way. Lightweight

and portable, this is an essential addition to any

    servicing toolkit.

OLAER EHP2 Piston accumulatorThis product is an ideal solution in applications where

the compression ratio between gas and oil needs to be

high, oil cleanliness is assured and where the customer

may want to more easily monitor gas pressure. Our

piston accumulators have been specifically designed

and tested for the rigours of this application and are

being used by a number of the worlds leading wind

    turbine producers.

OLAER ELM Diaphragm accumulatorDiaphragm accumulators are used on hydraulic

powerpacks within the nacelle for pitch control and

brake applications. Our products are of a more robust

design than our competitors who often use plastic

inside the accumulator where we use stronger metal

components, which cost more but perform better.

This also allows our products to perform with higher

compression ratios than competitor product, which

means that we are able to have greater functionality

    at a smaller size.

Olaer has the will and capability to verify their products in good cooperation with the customer. They have improved their test facilities and theoretical knowledge in close

cooperation with customers, suppliers and universities during the last few years which have improved the quality of the products.

    OLAER WIND POWER | Accumulators

    Olaer is a trusted partner of PMC Technology. We have a very open relationship. Over the past several years, we have noticed a real step up in their performance at all levels;

quality, competitiveness, delivery and development. They are clearly really good at what they do but remain a pleasure to work with.

Lars K. Mortensen, PMC Technology, Denmark.

Extreme forcesWhen accumulators of any type are mounted in the hub

of the turbine, they are subjected to extreme forces and

vibration due to the forces generated as the hub

is turning. Also, when used in pitch control, the

accumulators are working 100 % of the time whilst

the hub is turning, adjusting the blades many times

per minute. Regardless of the technology used, these

factors can lead to premature failure of components,

if they have not been adequately designed & tested

for these conditions. Furthermore, the accumulators can

also be used to supply power for an emergency stop

situation where the criticality of being available for

    use is high.

Olaer has a record of being the worlds leading supplier

of accumulators in the hub and no other supplier has

the depth of experience that Olaer has gained. We

are never complacent and are constantly working to

    improve our technology.

We have state of the art tools at our European engineering centre.

    The Professional Choice 7

Development partnerWe have invested heavily in our expert team of people

who have a unique set of experience, hardware and

software, to be the leading development partner. Working

closely with our customers, we are able to accurately

model the behaviour of the product in the field, both by

computer simulation and by physical product testing to

    ensure the best possible functionality.

Advanced technologyWe work with our customers in optimising mounting

position and sizing within initial turbine design and

developing specific rubber compounds for our bladder,

which meet the needs of this application in an optimum

way. Our latest bladder has been specifically designed

for the rigours of the hub and we are confident that

it significantly outlasts any offering currently being

made by our competitors. It is also (at time of press)

the only bladder compound validated for use in the

hub by the worlds leading turbine manufacturers.

We are currently developing further compounds to

    constantly improve our lifetime performance.

Continuous developmentWe have developed a special rilsan coating on the

accumulator shell, which has the purpose of drastically

reducing the friction between bladder and shell surface

in a very cost effective way. This also has the primary

goal of increasing product life, but also has additional

benefits of providing excellent corrosion protection,

whilst minimising any future contamination of the

system hydraulic oil as there is extremely little abrasion

between the working components to produce particles

in the hydraulic system. Once more, the process of

applying this coating is technically complex and has

been in development since the late 1990s, which

provides a high level of confidence to our customers,

as any non adhesion of coating can cause early system

failure and damage to some of the more expensive

    items within the hydraulic system.

Talk to usWhether you are an existing customer of Olaer,

a manufacturer or involved in field service of

    turbines, we look forward very

    much to hearing from you.
