ZL4 Mobile Robot
INTRODUCTION Mobile robots are in a sense the ultimate and most flexible application for embedded processors, which themselves account for about 99% of all computing equipment used today. Almost all electrical and electromechanical appliances developed contain and are being driven by a microcontroller. It is therefore of great importance to understand and be able to use this technology.
The ZL4 is an extendable experimental mobile robot platform, while the Raspberry Pi microcontroller has revolutionized high performance embedded computing because of its low price. With standard interfaces such as LAN (Ethernet), WLAN, USB, and HDMI video, as well as a full Linux operating system, it can be used for numerous control tasks and replace embedded PCs.
This workshop is tailored for Engineers of all areas (Mechanical/ Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer) with little experience in microcontrollers and programming. Hardware and software issues are being presented from the ground up and all-day lab sessions with help in understanding the material by experimenting with the microcontroller system.
Participants will be able to take home the Mobile Robot, Raspberry Pi microcontroller, digital camera, and all software to continue working with the system.
LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this workshop, participant will Understand construction and working of mobile
robots Understand principles of embedded system Be able to set up and interface the Raspberry Pi Be able to program the Raspberry Pi system Be able to integrate an embedded controller as part of
a Mechatronics system. Be able to program the robot to perform desired
navigation tasks.
TOPICS COVERED
This workshop is being planned as a hands-on, ongoing practical lab interrupted by presentations, rather than a traditional presentation-style seminar.
In addition to the real robot, we will also be using the EyeSim mobile robot simulator.
Participants need to bring:
Laptop computer (Mac, Windows, or Linux). Important: Admin password is required for software installations, 3G Internet stick is recommended.
Some general tools: o Screwdrivers (flat and Philips) o Small spanner set o Wire cutter and insulation stripper
Workshop Topics: Mobile Robot and Embedded System basics Raspberry Pi setup in hardware and software Laptop interfacing via remote desktop Digital Input/Output Embedded C Programming Sensors, Actuators, and Control
Lab Tasks:
1. Mobile Robot Assembly 2. Embedded Hardware and Software Setup 3. Motor Control 4. Image Processing Basics 5. Robot Navigation, Object Detection, Tracking WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS WORKSHOP This course is specially designed for Electrical, Computer, Mechanical and Mechatronic pro-fessionals, Engineers of all areas, as well as academics with interest in mobile robots, embedded systems, microcontrollers, interfacing, control, and programming.
No prior knowledge is required, but some C knowledge is helpful for creating own solutions in the labs.
WORKSHOP LEADER: Thomas Bräunl is Professor at the University of Western Australia, Perth, where he founded and directs the Robotics and Automation Lab and the Renewable Energy Vehicle Project. He received a Diploma in Informatics from Univ. Kaiserslautern, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a PhD and Habilitation in Informatics from Univ. Stuttgart. Professor Bräunl has worked in the past for BASF, Daimler (Mercedes Benz) and BMW, as well as his own company for innovative mobile robot design. His research interests are in electromobility, robotics, and embedded systems. He is author of several books, has developed the EyeBot mobile robot family, and directs the Renewable Energy Vehicle Project.
