The School of Dentistry aims to be an educational hub of nurturing dentists

who deeply respect the dignity of human life as a health care provider and

devote their practices to improve the community's oral health. In 1981, we

started as a college of dentistry and since 2003 have produced so far well

trained and competent dental graduates for the entrance of undergraduate

students from a various major field of study backgrounds. Taking the

opportunity of moving into Yang-San City in 2009, great improvement of

Global Studies Program (GSP) / PNU-KU Joint Lecture Program

52 532013 PUSAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

PNU’s Global Studies Program provides undergraduate students a stellar interdisciplinary

experience and demands academic distinction.

The curriculum, entirely taught in English, uniquely combines the lofty(art, literature, and philosophy), the

practical(communication and debate), and the globalized(economics, law, foreign relations, business, and culture).

Underpinning the varied courses are a low student-teacher ratio and an expert faculty, including those hired for the

GSP, others drawn from PNU’s deep intellectual talent, and still more invited for special lectures. Multiple professors

often participate in teaching a single course, providing a uniquely rich academic environment.

The GSP requires an equal contribution from the students including international students who are encouraged to

add their own cultural perspectives to class discussions. Though classes are partially conducted as lectures, they

also use the Socratic Method, involving energetic student participation. The GSP aims to help students to develop a

balanced global perspective, inter-cultural understanding, creativity, open-mindedness, and talents in presentation,

debate, analysis, and writing. Future alumni will be found in academics, international organizations, consulting firms,

government, media, policy research centers, trade associations, and transnational corporations.

The Institute of International Language Education (IILE) at PNU offers four sessions of

Korean Language Courses a year for international students.

Each session is ten weeks long and the curriculum covers Korean tradition, contemporary pop culture, and cultural

trips. At IILE, students not only learn the language but also gain understanding of Korean culture. Our teachers

are experienced, professionally trained instructors in teaching Korean as a foreign language and have a deep

understanding of Korean culture. They are dedicated to providing students with excellent classroom instruction.

The courses are organized to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while aiming at the overall,

balanced progress of the four fields. The program also guides students to better understand Korea and its culture

by providing cultural excursions and student helpers. Courses are offered on six different levels. Students are

placed at an appropriate level after taking a placement test.

Pusan National University and Kyushu University jointly offer a relay lecture under the

theme of ‘Challenges and Future in Korea-Japan relations’ yearly in the fall semesters.

Multiple professors of PNU and Kyushu University take turns to give lectures to a class consisted of both PNU and

KU students by visiting each other’s campus or using a video conference system. This program aims to enhance

the understanding of the relationship between the two leading East Asian countries by examining historical,

economic, geo-political, diplomatic, and cultural aspects of interactions between them. This program is a rare

opportunity for international students to hear from the two sides and look at the issue from various perspectives on

wide ranging topics by taking just one course.

The PNU Summer School provides foreign students with an enriched cultural and

educational experience for three or four weeks.

The program consists of subject courses, Korean language courses, various cultural activities such as

Taekwondo(traditional martial art), Samulnori(musical instruments), Kimchi(Korean food), Hanbok(traditional

costume), Dojagi(ceramics), K-pop, and field trips. It is divided into two sessions that share common features

while their schedules are not overlapping with each other. Students can choose one according to their schedule,

preferences and purpose.
