Message from the Director of MIM

Since its establishment in 1976, as the international component of the

Cyprus Productivity Centre, the Mediterranean Institute of Management

has immensely contributed to the development of professional

management in Cyprus. With the Postgraduate Management Diploma

Programme, MIM has set very high Professional Management standards

and has created a managerial elite, able to assist private and semi-

governmental organisations to adjust successfully to constant

socioeconomic changes and rapid technological innovation. More than

550 graduates of the Postgraduate Programme are shaping the future of

Cypriot enterprises, as well as of the Government sector, assisting them to

meet the challenges facing Cyprus in its effort to create and maintain a

competitive economy within the European Union.

Furthermore, I am very proud to say that through the organisation of the

Postgraduate Programme, as well as of other seminars/courses of short

duration, with international participation, MIM has contributed to the

economic development of many countries, both within and outside the EU.

More than 200 graduates, from more than 43 different countries, have

benefited from various programmes of the MIM over the past two decades.

I strongly recommend the Postgraduate Programme to both Cypriot and

overseas graduates who are interested in building an outstanding

managerial career and who, also, aspire to play a role in the shaping of a

new business world.

The Mediterranean Institute of Management

The Mediterranean Institute of Management (MIM) was established in1976. It constitutes the international component of the CyprusProductivity Centre (CPC), a Department of the Ministry of Labour,Welfare and Social Insurance.

The CPC was established in 1963 by the Cyprus Government, withassistance from the United Nations Development Programme and theInternational Labour Office. The relevant cooperation agreementexpired on the 30th of November 1974 and the Government has sincetaken over completely the operation of the Centre. CPC’s long termobjective is to assist private and public organisations to utilise theirhuman and capital resources in the best possible manner, with a viewto increasing their productivity.

The CPC offers training, consultancy and advice in all areas ofmanagement, as well as vocational training and technical advice invarious trades. It also undertakes research projects.

The MIM provides high quality management education for existing orfuture managers through the Postgraduate Management DiplomaProgramme. It also undertakes research and management consultancyprojects.

The Postgraduate Management Diploma Programme

This Postgraduate Management Diploma Programme offers students,from a variety of academic backgrounds, the opportunity to prepare fora managerial career. Its overall objective is to provide students with asound framework of concepts, analytical methods and techniques thatwill enable them to execute effectively their managerial duties.

The target group of the programme is, mainly, young unemployed uni-versity graduates with the objective of making them more attractive toprospective employers by offering them solid theoretical knowledge inManagement and the opportunity to enhance their managerial skillsthrough group work, internships and work-based learning.

Recognition of the MIM Postgraduate Diploma

The Cyprus Government, by decision of the Council of Ministers in June

1987, recognised the MIM Diploma as a postgraduate qualification in

management studies, of one academic year duration, for purposes of

employment in the Public Service.

Furthermore the MIM Diploma is recognised by the Cyprus Council for

the Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications (KYSATS), as

equivalent to a Master’s level qualification for holders of an accredited

Bachelor’s degree.

Programme Description

The Postgraduate Management Diploma Programme is of elevenmonths duration (September-July). Its content was revised and updatedin 2012, to reflect developments in the academic curricula worldwideand in response to the results of a recent survey carried out amongstCypriot entrepreneurs, to ascertain their requirements with regard toskills and knowledge they seek, when hiring university graduates fortheir businesses. The programme is taught in English.

Coursework includes lectures, workshops, tutorials, role play exercises,video presentations, and case studies. All students are required toundertake a project in the area of their interest and submit anappropriate final project report.

Another essential part of the programme is the on-the-job training(internship) at a host organisation/enterprise/government departmentthat takes place during the second and third terms. During these termsstudents are placed at appropriate management posts for a period of12 weeks (6 in the 2nd term and 6 in the 3rd term).

The programme comprises 17 different courses plus internship trainingof 228 hours, divided roughly equally between the 2nd and 3rd term.The 3rd term internship period includes work on the Final Project. Thetotal duration of the programme is 720 hours.

Courses Description

General Management

The objective of this course is to introduce students to managementand organisational concepts, as well as to current trends and issues ofmanagement, such as modern organisational cultures, managingchange, learning organisations and entrepreneurship, and to explainand analyse the basic management functions of Planning, Organising,Leading and Controlling. The course also introduces students to theenvironment of management, the management process, and availabletechniques used by managers in managing a business.

Human Resource Management

This course aims at building knowledge and providing practice in thevarious HR techniques, as well as providing students with a backgroundand perspective that will help them to develop successful careerstrategies. It furthermore builds knowledge and provides practice intechniques of collecting and analysing data for the purpose of resolvingissues directly related to human resource management.

Marketing ManagementThe main objective of this course is to give a comprehensive andrigorous introduction to the theory and applications of modernmarketing. The course includes topics such as the critical role ofmarketing in organisations and society, strategic marketing, buyerbehaviour, market segmentation, product life cycle, pricing, distributionand promotion decisions, and organising, implementing and controllingthe marketing effort.

EconomicsThe objective of this course is to provide students with knowledge onbasic economic theory and analytical tools relating to the mostimportant economic problems both at the macro as well as the microlevel. Some of the topics covered are the law of supply and demand,cost analysis, monopoly and oligopoly, factors of production, calculationof GNP, growth, inflation, pricing and unemployment.

Financial AccountingThe course explains the main principles of accounting, including theaccounting equation and the double entry system and exposesstudents to financial statements (i.e. Income Statement, Balance Sheet)and to post Trial Balance adjustments and the completion of theaccounting cycle. The course helps students understand the nature andthe accounts of a merchandising business and the purpose of ratioanalysis.

Personal DevelopmentThe main objective of this course is to provide students with anunderstanding of the modern principles that lead to businessleadership. Through the course, students will develop self-concept, geton the fast track to achieving their goals and learn how to deal with timeand productivity wasters.

Production & Operations ManagementThis course is planned to expose students to basic functions of systemsproducing goods or delivering services. Students will review and learnhow to apply various techniques for planning, scheduling, andcontrolling at different organisational levels. Emphasis will be given onthe application of manufacturing and operation management practicesand tools in business examples. Through business case studies, studentswill be in a position to apply the concepts of operations planning andcontrol and be able to link business strategy with manufacturing andoperations strategy.

Quality ManagementThe objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic

concepts of Quality Management and to familiarise them with various

techniques, methods, models and tools used in the scientific approach

to the analysis and solution of quality-related management problems.

The course is highly interactive and enables students to acquire an

operational knowledge of the modern approach to problem solving for

continuous improvement, both crucial in enhancing the competitiveness

of an enterprise.

Managerial AccountingThis course introduces students to the area of managerial accounting

and the fundamental managerial accounting concepts. Students are

exposed to managerial methods and techniques in performing the

major functions of planning, controlling, directing and decision making.

It also provides knowledge of basic cost terminology, cost and CVP

analysis and budget preparation.

Marketing Tools & TechniquesAs a continuation of the Marketing Management course of the 1st term,

the course aims at giving the students the opportunity to put Marketing

Research knowledge acquired, into practice through the design and

execution, in small groups, of an actual research project. The course

demonstrates how a research project is designed, executed and/or

supervised and enables students to understand if/when research, is the

appropriate tool to handle a marketing problem and/or make a marketing

decision. Additionally, students are introduced to tools and techniques

of Promotion, to render them capable of designing/implementing

promotion strategies.

Research Methodology & Dissertation WritingThe major objective of this course is to render students capable ofdesigning, carrying out and completing a research project. Basicresearch concepts and practices applied in solving business problemsare studied, and practical advice, guidelines and instructions are given,to assist students in writing and presenting their final dissertation.

Internship IStudents are given the opportunity for work-based learning at amanagement post within a host organisation, so as to enhance theirmanagerial skills through experiences from all aspects of businessmanagement; this provides them with the opportunity to put theoryinto practice.

Finance

The main objective of this course is the thorough study of the properfinancial management of a corporation. Students are placed in theposition of a financial manager and are asked to make decisions onplanning, acquiring, and allocating funds for “their” business. Uponcompletion of the course students are able to understand the way firmsfinance, invest and manage themselves in the real market, how theyanalyse investment decisions and understand the choice of capitalstructure and its implications for the value of the firm.

Productivity Management

The objective of the course is to enable students to appreciate theimportance of productivity for economic growth and to understand thefactors that affect productivity. The course furnishes the students withthe necessary knowledge relating to the major widely applied modernproductivity measurement techniques, and the skills required indesigning a productivity measurement system.

Strategic Management

The course provides an understanding of strategic analysis, strategicdecision making and the strategic process within and betweenorganisations. As a result, students are able to critically appraise,evaluate and discuss strategic decisions and the managementchallenges involved in managing change and implementing strategicplans.

Entrepreneurship

The main objective of the unit is to enable students to identify,appreciate, and assess the attitudes and skills of an entrepreneur anddevelop the necessary skills for business start-up in today’s challengingbusiness environment.

Business Law

This course is intented to help students attain a basic understanding ofthe Cyprus legal system particularly in relation to the operation ofbusinesses.

Organisational Performance Assessment

The course introduces students to the strategic role of organisationalperformance as a discipline for planning and controlling theperformance so that strategic objectives can be set, monitored andcontrolled. It also covers the impact of external factors on strategicmanagement issues. The unit also examines, at an operational level, theissues relating to the major widely applied performance managementand operational systems for the measurement and control ofperformance in a variety of contexts.

Internship II & Final Project work

Students are given the opportunity for work-based learning at amanagement post within a host organisation. As a continuation of themodule Internship I, students are given the opportunity to furtherenhance their managerial skills by focusing on the topic of their finalproject.

Admission Requirements

Basic admission requirements:

l University degree or equivalent qualification in any subject.

l Very good command of the english language (Graduates from non-english speaking universities will be asked to provide proof offluency in English).

l Success in the entrance examination (aptitude tests) conducted bythe MIM.

l Foreign applicants who do not reside in Cyprus may, at the discretionof the MIM Steering Committee, be exempted from the entranceexamination.

Application Procedure

Graduates wishing to apply for admission to the MIM must completethe application form available online at www.mlsi.gov.cy/kepa

The Application Form must be completed and forwarded to the MIMSecretariat by 8 September 2014, at the latest, accompanied by thefollowing documents:

l A copy of the University degree or equivalent qualification in anysubject or a statement of expected graduation on a date precedingthe commencement date of the MIM Postgraduate Programme.

l Proof of fluency in English (for non-english speaking universitygraduates), such as an English Proficiency Examination Certificate(GCE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).

l Overseas applicants who wish to attend the programme on theirown expenses must also submit a Certificate of Financial Resourcesindicating the source of funds to be used during their studies at theMIM.

Entrance Examination

All applicants who meet the admission requirements receive invitationto the examination.

Final selection is based on the results of the entrance examination forall applicants who apply.

The dates of the entrance examination for the PostgraduateProgramme for the 2014/15 academic year are as follows:

l 30 June 2014 (for applications received by 25 June 2014)

l 11 September 2014 (for applications received by 8 September 2014)

Internship Arrangements

During the first term of the programme, the MIM arranges meetingswith participating organisations that host the students during the 2ndand 3rd terms, for purposes of internship training. Effort is made tomatch students’ interests/preferences with the type of business/organisation offering the training.

Scholarships for Overseas Students

In recent years, a number of scholarships were offered to participantsfrom the Commonwealth, as well as from other countries in Africa, Asiaand Europe, to study at the MIM. Prospective students are urged to in-vestigate this possibility with various Governments/organisations/fundsfor technical cooperation etc. A great number of scholarship schemesare available both within as well as outside the EU.

Other Relevant Information

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for the 2014/2015 programme are €3.426, payable in threeequal installments of €1.142 each, at the beginning of each term.Permanent residents of the Republic of Cyprus can qualify to receive agrant of up to €2.565 provided by the Grants and Benefits Service of theMinistry of Finance.

Other Expenses

Living expenses (housing, food, books and incidentals) for an 11-monthstay in Cyprus would be approximately between €8.000 and €9.000.

Library

The MIM library has a comprehensivecollection of text books, journals,government publications and DVDsrelevant to management and it offersreference and lending facilities. A numberof online sources and data banks are alsoavailable to students.

Computer Services

Two modern, fully equipped computer labs with internet access areavailable for scheduled classes, and for free/open use by the students.Free Wi-Fi is also available on the MIM premises.
