Welcome to Brouhaha International Street Festival 2014. Join us to celebrate the diversity of our city’s cultural landscape.

Discover international companies from around the world and see new indoor and outdoor commissions. This year we deliver parades across the United Kingdom as well as produce new collaborative local and international work.

There are 2 elements to ‘Infecting The City’. An artistic street parade showcasing new large scale carnival structure to the city’s residents and visitors. This cultural parade will present a wide and diverse range of carnival traditions from Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Carribean providing a global programme of work for a truly global City. The second activity is public-facing and sees a number of site specific performances animating public spaces and buildings across the City.

2 014 sees us present a H.A.I.R. (Heritage, Attitude. Identity. Respect). There will be 5 large structures representing differen eras

in the black harir history including, African Origins, Post Emancipation, Roots and Urban Culture.

Liverpool carnival will this year be unlike previous years. This year we will have various street acts preceding the carnival so be prepared for some thrilling and unorthodox carnival treats. Dont forget to download our app www.im-atapp.com to keep up to date with all things carnival you will be recieving updates throughout the day you will be able to see the carnival line up, the acts performing on our stage and more.

Our carnival’s artistic Director Ray Mahabir’s costume designs are based on the four continents of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe that when joined together create a ‘Global Festival’ (Fete).

Participating in our 2014 carnival will be costume sections from Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral and Halton as well as national participation by carnival troupes from Preston, Leeds, and London.

Also joining us at this year’s festival and carnival will be international performing arts companies fromaround the world.

Our parade will lead to Princes Park, in the heart of Toxteth. A multicultural celebration, with local, regional, national

and international performances. The park will also host a family Circus Garden area with children’s workshops and performances. In the park there will be international food stalls, something for all tastes.

2014 will see Princes Park come alive with local and international performers. Brouhaha International showcases new international collaboration performance projects ‘The drum machine’ with over 60 percussionsists from five countries and Circolumbia one of Latin Americas best youth circuses. There will also be a community engagement tent with local information stands, emergency and housing association services provided by Plus Dane Group. The Family Environment will keep children and parents entertained with craft, games and performances. World in Princes Park will be bursting with exciting new collaborative productions, home grown talent, cultural food and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Respecting Your Environment. This is a family event and people should be able to enjoy themselves while having the maximum of respect for the environment and those around them, please ensure that all rubbish is placed in the bins provided and be aware that there will be no parking or access to the park for motorized vehicles all day. World in Princes Park is a dry event and no alcohol will be on sale. This event has been made possible through a partnership between Brouhaha International and Plus Dane Housing Group and Merseycare.

Our day begins with a spectacular carnival parade with performances and costume groups making their way through Stanley Park coming to rest at the Isla Gladstone. We then bring you a day long festival of local and international music, dance, circus and street theatre with live music on the beautiful bandstand as part of the LIMF Bandstand programme

T he year Brouhaha International has been working with new school groups. We have been delivering dance workshops through

‘All Feet Can Dance’.

Y oung people have taken part in an issue based broadcast. They have covered topics such as, The European Union,

Cultural Diversity, Human Rights and Youth Employment. You can see these episodes on our YouTube page.

One performance, in one location for one night only, in tribute to and celebrating one man’s

birthday - Nelson Mandela. Mandela Day will see over 200 international performers from South Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and Latin America collaborate on a large performance that will bring our 2014 festival to a close.

I n partnership with the Edinburgh Blues and Jazz Festival and Fife Council, Brouhaha International brings its carnival atmosphere

to the street’s of Kirkcaldy, Scotland. This event begins with a street parade of large-scale carnival puppets and costumes leading to Town House Square, where local and international groups perform dance, music, circus and much more.

J-JD (Germany) J-JD is a singer/rapper & producer from Germany who will release his second album in August. Speaking about his life, different living conditions & experiences make his songs sound very deep, conscious & emotional. His music, which is produced by himself, is a mixture of Soul, R’n’B, Hip-Hop, Afro-Beat & Ambient music. .

Gwanaval (Martinique) much like thier name suggests these drummers where designed for carnival with beats that can be heard from miles around.

Circolumbia (Columbia)

Circo Fantaziticco (Costa Rico)

A colourful and exciting circus group. Join us in Liverpool for a limited time only with tricks and agility that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Belmont Freetown (Trinidad and Tobago) A vibrant performing arts group from the beautiful Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago will this year bring a show that will honour the memory of Bob Marley.

Thrilling acrobats from Columbia that have incredible, soaring reviews. In their first ever time in Liverpool they will be bringing their best performance yet.

One Love is a music group of five teenagers who sing & rap in German. Their songs deal with certain stories they have experienced in their lifetime whereby love plays a big role. All the artists of the Hip-Hop/R’n’B group have a different cultural background but using one language to spread their messages.

The Country Boys (Trinidad & Tobago) The Country Boys tassa drumming group have performed in Guadeloupe, Grenada, Cuba and the UK, with their pulsating sound. Their group’s goal is to continue their unique sound through the world, soothing the hearts of their listeners with the rhythmic drums and maintaining a high quality of music.

Capolire (Japan) This group have toured the world showcasing their incredible double dutch skills and for the first time since 2008 they will be returing to Brouhaha with more show stopping tricks than ever before .

Artscape (South Africa) Artscape Youth Jazz Band created as a new initiative to promote jazz across the Cape Town province. The Band present township jazz for the street under the musical direction of Ian Smith.

Barefeet Theatre (Zambia) is a charirty that works with kids living on the street in Zambia and those at risk of being on the street and they will be bringing ‘Float’ a homage to the Zambain water goddess.

Junkanoo Commandos (The Bahamas) are a group of professional, musicains, costume designers and makers who have been travelling internationally throughout Europe, The Caribbean and the UK. They will be bringing their own designs and flavour to this year’s festival.

XXL (Spain) XXL perform a new show which is an elegant fusion of contemporary and urban dance.

KalentuRA (the Netherlands) KalentuRa is best known for their Caribbean drum band that transforms every event into a rhythmic spectacle. The band draws inspiration from the Caribbean and Brazilian carnival, but is also influenced by Antillean, Surinamese, Latin-American, African and even Dutch music. This unusual mix of music styles gives the band a unique and individualistic style. With inciting music and sparkling shows, KalentuRa delivers tropical heat for every event. The band lives up to its name, which means warmth or heat in Papiamento. For the drummers of KalentuRa it is not only about the music, but also the enthusiasm, the dance, the feeling of energy. You hear it, you see it and you feel it.

Bombrando (Portugal) BOMBRANDO Percussion and Portuguese bagpipes aims to encourage the participation of the young people in cultural activities, promoting traditional culture. BOMBRANDO provides great moments of musical performance drawing on drum traditions from Africans, reggae to rock and classical.

Got Skills, D’vine & Hause of Shoqlat (the Netherlands) will be representing together a blended urban arts streets dance show that will blur the lines between vogue, hiphop and dancehall. This spectacle of the urban arts is not to be missed.

M-PACT UPSI (Malaysia) which stands for Music Performing Arts Culture Troupe Universiti Idris. The group perform Mak Yung; a Traditional form of dance and drama from the state of Kelantan, Malaysia. In 2005 UNESCO declared mak yung as a true masterpiece.

U-CARE Urban Culture Against Racism in Europe. This project sees 11 organisations in 8 countries join forces and pool their knowledge to combine an anti-racist/anti-discrimination peer coaching approach with urban culture and media. Young people with diverse cultural backgrounds were trained in national seminars and an international summer academy 2013 to become U-CARE coaches. They were empowered to spread the message of increasing mutual understanding and combating racism and discrimination.

B rouhaha International leads the way in the development and delivery of arts engagement and carnival arts at an international level. Through our partnerships across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and the Mediterranean Rim we are able to create large-scale mobile performances that

involve artists and communities.
