RESTORING THE HISTORIC
ALLENDALE THEATRE
One of Buffalos firstneighborhood theatres, the
Allendale was built in 1913 for$45,000 by clothing retailer LevinMichaels. The Neo-ClassicalRevival style theatre includedgold trimmed walls, leaded glasswindows and a stunning domedceiling with dozens of modernlight bulbs. At first, the popularmovie house specialized in silentfilms and photoplays of Broadwayproductions, with a custom-built
symphonic organ foraccompaniment. In 1919, theowner added a lavish prosceniumstage and dressing rooms thatattracted the Buffalo Players (alocal theatre group includingmembers of the Knox, Schoellkopfand other prominent families), aswell as national acts such as theBarrymore brothers and W.C.Fields.
The years were not kind to theAllendale Theatre. Fortunately, the Allentown Association saved itfrom certain demolition. Thequestions were: now that thebuilding was saved, who wouldrestore it and what would itsfunction be? In 1986, Theatre of Youth (TOY) entered into apartnership with the City ofBuffalo to raise funds and
renovate the theatre for itspermanent home.
The Allendale renovationcombined sensitivity to historicpreservation, a challenginginterior design, a uniquecollaboration between thedisciplines of architecture andtheatre, and an opportunity topromote neighborhoodrevitalization. Historic elementssuch as the interior decorativepilasters, plaster moldings, domed ceiling and the exteriorneoclassic faade have beenrepaired and restored. Thetheatre is equipped with aproscenium stage, fly and wingspace, a sound and lightingsystem, dressing rooms, rehearsal space, and seating for469 people. The intention of therenovation was to honor thebuildings past while assuring itsusefulness in the future.
The $3.5 million project took 13years to complete. Theatre of
Youth opened the Allendale onDecember 5, 1999 with aproduction ofVoyage of theDragonfly. Since that time, over 500,000 children, alongwith their parents and teachers, have passed through thesehistoric doors to experience liveprofessional theatre.
