  • Outdoors at last! Hasn’t the Indoor season seemed to go on forever? Well thankfully now that the clocks have gone forward we are enjoying the great outdoors again!

Some DCAS archers have already ventured out of county - to Bath, Chippenham and Andover - to get their outdoor season off to a great start. A special mention must go to Lacetown Junior, Hannah Wells who shot her first outdoor comp of the year at Andover - securing first place in the under 14 Recurve category, a new personal best and her first Junior Bowmen Score of the year!

By the time you read this, Redruth and Bowmen of the Tors will have both held their longbow tournaments and over the coming months there are lots of competitions happening closer to home. The following are the competitions currently advertised across the counties (correct at the time of publishing). Please visit the DCAS Events page for entry forms and contact details.

A Message from your County Coaching Organiser - Andy Parkinson

It has been quite a busy time with renewals squad events and junior coaching sessions and I would

like to thank all those involved.

We have also managed an open coaching event in Cornwall, which saw 20 archers in attendance.

Thanks to Sean Ellis for leading the day . It was a very informative and helpful day and I hope

everyone was able to take something away from the session. I hope to be able to run these on a

regular basis across the counties. Coaches and venues are always needed so if you are able to

volunteer either please let me know.

The DCAS overhead camera was put to good use during the session and has proven to be a great

coaching aid. Please remember that clubs can borrow the camera set up once they have

    completed the appropriate training.

A level one coach course is due to start in July and this will be in Plymouth. Thanks to Karen Ingram for organizing this now full . A level 2 course will also be organized in the near future.

  • DCAS Senior County Team Selection for 2019

Would you like to shoot for the county team in 2019? There are two events that the county team competes in during the year, the National Intercounties in June and the GWAS Intercounties in September. The team will be selected independently for each of these events. All archers interested must submit their scores on the appropriate form to the team manager by the relevant cut off date. We are particularly in need of more compound archers to put themselves forward.

National Intercounties Event Date: 29/30 June 2019 Submission Cutoff date: 20

    th May 2019

Bowstyles: Compound, Recurve and Longbow Requirement: Four 12 dozen rounds shot in competition after 29th June 2018, 1 should preferably be from 2019. If you intend to submit scores for this event please notify the team manager as soon as possible so that the team entry can be made in advance and the individual names submitted after the cut off date.

    GWAS Intercounties Event Date: 22

    nd September 2019

    Submission Cutoff date: 28th

August 2019 Bowstyles: Compound, Recurve, Barebow and Longbow Requirement: Four 12 dozen rounds shot in competition after during 2019. At least one must be shot on or after the last weekend in July. Full details of the selection criteria and forms for both events can be found on the DCAS website. It will be the Archers responsibility to forward their selection scores on the official form to the Team Manager. To ensure that entries have not been lost in transit, if their submission has been not acknowledged by the day after the cut off date the archer must contact the team manager.

If you have any queries please contact

Estelle Edwick via email at [email protected]

    Early Warning

The National Judges Conference hosted by GWAS is being held

on Sunday 1st March 2020. When organising your tournament

diary please do not organise a competition for this date as there

will be no judges available on this date .

  • GWAS Indoor Championships

    17th February 2019

Now in it’s 45th year the GWAS Regional Indoor Championships are held each year in February at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. It hosts archers from the four Grand Western Region Counties (Devon & Cornwall, Dorset & Wiltshire, Gloucester, and Somerset) in four disciplines (Recurve, Compound, Barebow, and Longbow) and determines the year’s Regional Indoor Champions.

Whilst numbers were slightly down for those representing Devon and Cornwall (hopefully we can muster more next year?) the competition was full, with two sessions of archers competing on 19 targets. For the first time Robin Leveridge (our friendly tournament organiser) was using the Ianseo scoring system, with help from Tim Pratt and Andrew Hoyle and the competition was closely followed online throughout the day.

After a tightly fought competition DCAS archers were rewarded for their efforts with the following best achievements:

Recurve Ladies: Saira Chaudhry 3rd place GWAS

Barebow Ladies: Karen Grassie 2nd place GWAS

Longbow Ladies: Sophie Twigg GWAS Champion

Longbow Gents: Scott Williams GWAS Champion

Junior Ladies Recurve U14: Hannah Wells GWAS Champion

With many of the other DCAS archers putting in terrific performances throughout the day.

Sunday 16th February 2020 is the proposed date for next year's GWAS Indoor Champs – pop it in your diaries now .....

Website Update Tim Pratt, our Technical Officer is

    busy updating and upgrading our

Website and is currently working on getting the basic

hoping to launch the new site later this year.

  • Eaton Manor - DCAS Archers Coaching Weekend 2020

Over the last three years small groups of Devon and Cornwall Senior Archers have been going to Eaton Manor for a weekend to focus on Archery in February. Eaton Manor is set in the South Shropshire countryside. The attraction for our archers is a weekend of access to the 70 metre (Olympic-sized) indoor range used by both GB Olympic and Commonwealth Squads for training. February is a great time of year to be starting to think about the adjustments we need to make to shoot longer distances outdoors, but not a good time of year to be out in the elements. So a weekend with access to 70m indoors is a great way to get ahead of the game. With access to coaches, our overhead camera set up and the built-in timing system at the range, we have been able to practice team head to heads, work on form and tune bows without any wind. The range was created out of an old chicken shed. It is heated at the shooting line but the majority of the building is not heated, so it is also a good way to practice shooting in the layers of clothing you need at the beginning of the outdoor season. The estate has a number of holiday cottages all set within a 500 acre estate in a private valley at the end of a country lane. The self-catered accommodation provides everything we need in a home away from home during our stay. A local caterer provides home cooked meals for the evening ready to heat and serve in the fully equipped kitchen, and we have clubbed together to provide the ingredients we need for breakfasts and lunches. The cottages are all very individual in character and can sleep different numbers, with the largest of them sleeping up to 14 people each. We usually stay in the Manor House which has a lovely big dining room so we can all eat together and swap archery stories in the evening. Although the majority of participants have been members of the Devon and Cornwall Senior Squad, the offer to attend is open to all Senior archers wanting to practice longer distances indoors. Longbow archers who shoot lighter poundage should be aware that the distance they can shoot may be limited below 70m; although the building has a high ceiling trajectory for arrows from lower poundage bows may not be possible at the longest distance. However archers have still benefited from being able to shoot 60m/yards or less. If you would be interested in joining us in 2020, the dates will be 7-9 February. We estimate the cost (dependent on numbers) will be no more than £170 per person plus food. The deposit to secure a place is £60 with the balance being paid in December. Deposits will be refunded only if a replacement person can be found.

Estelle Edwick is coordinating the booking arrangements and can be contacted by emailing [email protected]

  • Junior County Coaching

Over the last few months, juniors from across Devon and Cornwall have had the opportunity to attend County Coaching Sessions organised and run by our County Junior Rep - Sophie Twigg.

Firstly, on Saturday 16th February our Juniors were treated to an indoor session focusing on form and consistency. Juniors and their parents were also invited to stay for a very informative talk by Sophie about how to prepare for competition and what our youngsters need to do to apply for a place on the Country team.

Most recently, on Saturday 6th April juniors were invited to an outdoor training session where they were given the opportunity to shoot a half metric round (distances appropriate for their age category) under competition rules and conditions. They had expert coaching from the team and we even had local Judges in attendance to give them all hints and tips for competition.

Sophie is planning on running another coaching session once this outdoor season has ended - so watch out for details over the coming months.

    DCAS Junior Fund

As a reminder to all archers, parents and clubs we have recently introduced a two month time-limit from the date of the shoot/expenditure for claims to be made for payment from the DCAS Junior Fund (see the updated details on the DCAS website at http://www.dcas.org.uk/misc_docs/juniorfunddetails.pdf ). Please note that this time-limit also applies to Tournament Organisers within DCAS wishing to claim from the DCAS Junior Fund for entry fees for visiting DCAS Juniors attending their shoots 'free of charge'.

    CALLING ALL JUNIORS

    Redruth Archers Open Junior Tournament

    Saturday 22nd June 2019

After having a chat with several parents at the last Junior Inter-

counties last year, Peter and Sarah Conisbee from Redruth Archers,

have decided to run a juniors only tournament. The firmly believe that

this is something that juniors within the county would like to take part

in and would support. The Tournament open to all juniors within

Devon and Cornwall and it will cost you all nothing as entry is free !!

There will be age relevant Metric rounds under WA rules in the morning with timing and lights and

two very nice and helpful judges to get you all used to competition shooting. A break for lunch and

then some fun shooting in the afternoon with balloons and fun faces. We may well follow this with

    an optional Clout shoot.

We are running this the day before our Double American shoot, and camping will be available for

anyone who wishes to shoot it, or your Mums and Dads. The entry form for this tournament is

available on the DCAS website. If you would like any more information, please contact Peter and

Sarah on 01209821433, or email them at pcatthebarn@gmail.

    Junior County Team Selection

This year’s Junior Inter-counties match will be held on Saturday 14th September, at Yeo Bowman

in Yeovil. The competition will be combined with the GWAS Junior Championships, so whether you

are on the county team or not you can still attend the competition on an individual basis. The entry

form will be on the GWAS and DCAS website very soon. Members of the DCAS Junior County

Team have free entry to the GWAS

    Championships.

If you wish to be considered for the County Team

please contact Sophie Twigg who will send you

an application form for you to submit your details

along with two 12 dozen scores. Sophie can be

    contacted by email at

    [email protected]. The deadline for

    applications is Friday 2nd August.

  • DCAS Records

For anyone wanting to claim a DCAS County record, please remember that you have only four weeks from the date of the tournament to do this and three months for GWAS. GWAS Regional Record Claims are sent via your DCAS CRO - Scott Williams.

Claim forms are available on DCAS and GWAS websites respectively and Scott usually carry a few blank forms to tournaments; you can also hand completed forms to him personally at any shoot he attends.

Claims can be made from scores achieved at any Open Tournament, including 'Masters' claims for archers aged 50+, in addition to regular record claims. All claims from outside County must be accompanied by a copy of the results sheet.

All records are available to view on the DCAS website. New DCAS records claimed since the last newsletter are:
