The main aims of our research are: to give the general information about schools in Great
Britain: The types of school; The school year and the holidays; Subjects and marks; to find out the differences between Russian and British
schools; to make a presentationFor the realization of these aims we have to solve the
following tasks: to learn different materials; to find and sum up the necessary information;

In the VI century church opened school for clergymen, later grammar schools were opened. Children studied Latin grammar at school. In 1880 year education was compulsory for everybody. Since 1944, education has been available free of charge to all British children. It is compulsory for all children to go to school until the age of sixteen.

The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow and Winchester.

They attend primary school for seven years, where they study English, arithmetic, science, Religious education, history, geography, music, art and crafts, physical education, and information technology (computers).

Nearly 90 per cent of secondary school pupils in England go to comprehensive schools. These schools take children of all abilities .
Grammar Schools are selective. Entrance is based on a test of ability, usually at 11 (11+). Children either go to a boys Grammar School or a Girls Grammar School.

The school year in Britain starts in September. The lessons last 40-45 minutes. The children attend school from Monday to Friday, from 08:55 - 15:15. Schools are open for 195 days (39 weeks) each school year.
British students have Christmas holidays, Easter holidays and Summer holidays. Schools also have special half-term holidays in the middle of each term. These holidays last 2-3 days before or after a weekend.

The school day starts with assembly. It is a short daily meeting for the whole schools to give important information and give some religious worship (богослужение).

The first foreign language they learn at school is French. Sometimes they also learn a second foreign language: German, Spanish, Russian.

In Britain at the end of each term a school sends a report to parents. It has the pupil’s marks in all the subjects and the teacher’s comments on the pupil’s progress.

The five minutes between lessons is not a break. Pupils must use this time to move quickly to the next lesson.
During the lunch hour pupils have time to do many things besides eating. They can also read in the library, participate in clubs or sport, and go home.
