Bench trunking is an ideal solution for laboratories, schools, colleges and universities. ANTI-MICROBIALT R U N K I N G

MANUFACTURERS OF uPVC CABLE MANAGEMENTSYSTEMS FOR THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR

Anti-microbial uPVC cable management systems have been available for some years but the need to provide a healthy and safe environment particularly in nurseries, care homes and hospitals has not gone away as neither have the harmful organisms.

The basis of the additive is the use of silver which has been used for centuries as a biostatic agent. When contacted by moisture, an electrochemical reaction releases silver ions. These ions penetrate microbes rendering them unable to function, grow, or reproduce.

To ensure our additives are effective and compliant with ISO 22196:2011 ‘Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces’, periodic testing is undertaken by specialists in the industry. Untreated control samples are submitted with treated items and recent results show that a 99.9% reduction is achieved against E coli and Staphylococcus aureus being two of the most prominent bacterial infections.

Through widespread specification, Centaur has pioneered the use of anti-microbial additives in its grades of uPVC and continues to help control the spread of harmful bacteria in the public sector.

BS7671:2008 – Amendment 1:2011 Section 521.10.1 stipulates the need for trunking to deliver IPXXD or IP4X protection when used with single insulated (non-sheathed) cables.

The new FastConnect basket tray recently launched by Tamlex of Telford has a unique design that enables quick and easy installation and so saving precious time on site against traditional products. The patented coupler does not require screws, tools or any other fastener as it simply clips into position and can be easily removed and repositioned if necessary.

Having been presented to Stuart Newnes, Director of Integrated Electrical Projects of Ashton-Under-Lyme it was chosen for use in a refurbishment of a luxury car dealership in Cardiff.

“I found the FastConnect couplers really made a difference to the install time,” said Craig Baker, “because of how easy they are to clip in. The basket I have used on previous jobs has a thread through clip on each side and can cause problems if you need to remove them. FastConnect has the added benefit that you don’t have to order the clips separately, which saves money! I would happily use and recommend this system on future projects due to the ease of installation.”

FAST CARS AND FASTCONNECT IN SOUTH WALESHeatherwood Hospital in Ascot as part of the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust have recently upgraded a 3,500 m2 vacant area, following the transfer away of the Trust’s mental health provision, to two floors of high quality office space.

The new area includes meeting rooms, open plan desk and hot desking area, staff changing and shower areas as well as a break-out space, an “al fresco” dining space and a data centre.

Main contractors Logan Construction used Spark-rite Ltd of Yately for the electrical installation. Site manager, Steve Clark said, “We were looking for some quality alternative products for this project at an affordable price and the Centaur DMXT 42W Trunking was proposed to us.”

The uPVC trunking from Centaur Manufacturing with its dual compartment profile provides generous wiring space for all power and data cabling and with their specialist fabrications department were able to provide any special accessories to accommodate any unusual corners and obstacles that are often encountered during refurbishments.

The project is part of a plan to revitalise Heatherwood Hospital and the Trust’s offering, which will also see a new hospital built on the site adjacent to the recent refurbishment in the near future.

CENTAUR CERTAINTY AT ASCOT

NHS Foundation Trust

Three new blocks comprising of 125 rooms of student accommodation have been developed for Falmouth University at Packsaddle near Penryn. The university, being the second largest employer in Cornwall, has about 6,000 students with a general shortage of accommodation, so this purpose built mix of studios and cluster flats was not only most welcome but also freed up other properties in the area.

Developed by Dodd Group, the rooms were supplied with purpose made illuminated power trunking modules as supplied by Centaur Manufacturing of Redditch. The three compartment uPVC modules were fitted with LED lighting strips to provide reading light plus power socket outlets some with the all-important USB integrated charging outlets. Each unit was protected by its own in-line RCBO.

“We didn’t know this sort of product was available”, said Project Manager Peter Phillis. “Following a discussion with Centaur a sample was approved and supply quickly followed. Having the units populated saved us time on site which was very useful”.

FALMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Ridgeons the timber and builders merchants have continued their expansion across the East Anglia area by opening another new branch in Coldhams Business Park, Cambridge. As part of the electrical fit-out main contractors 7formation used Steve Rudkin Electrical of Stamford, Peterborough, to carry out the installation. Following a site visit where the choice of whether to use traditional steel cable tray for all the overhead containment or wire basket were considered, the decision was made to use the new FastConnect range from Tamlex, the steel cable management specialists from Telford.

The conditions in the new store and the amount of cables to be contained made FastConnect an ideal option. The patented coupling system and the ready availability of bends, tees and risers enable a fast installation and provide an on-site flexibility over conventional perforated tray. “We found the Tamlex FastConnect very quick and easy to install” said Steve Rudkin, “and I am already considering using it again on the next job.”

For cable management in the offices, the Meridian three compartment trunking system by Centaur Manufacturing was installed. The clever design of flexible bends, clip-on covers and pre-pierced bases all assisted in a quick and speedy installation. A protective peel-off film is applied to the outer covers which is only removed once all decorations are completed.

“It seems Centaur and Tamlex design their products to make installation simple and quick”, said Steve, “which means reducing costs for me and my clients which is always good news”.
