They are informed by a boy that Mr. Godot cannot come, but that he will surely come tomorrow. So they repeats the same pattern of waiting

ACT 1. a morning in summer

노부부 Petey와 Meg가 운영하는 해변가 하숙집. 숙박객 Stanley는 아침을 먹다가 노부인 Meg을 놀린다. 두 사내가 방문할 것이라는 Meg의 말에 긴장하는 Stanley. 과거 피아니스트 시절을 회상하던 Stanley는 옆집 처녀 Lulu가 찾아와 함께 산책하자는 말을 거절하고 홀로 외출한다. 그 사이 두 사내 Goldberg와 McCann이 Meg이 하숙집을 찾는다. 이들은 Meg에게 오늘이 Stanley의 생일이며 생일파티를 열 것이라고 말한다. Meg는 Stanley에게 장난감 북(toy drum)을 선물하고, Stanley는 북을 치기 시작한다.

ACT 2. evening of the same day

두 사내와 Stanley 사이에 점차 묘한 긴장감이 고조되어 간다. 급기야 McCann과 Goldberg는 Stanley를 강제로 의자에 앉히고 비난, 모욕, 질문 등의 말 공세를 퍼붓는다. 이윽고 Stanley의 의지와는 상관 없이 생일파티가 시작된다. 장님놀이 술래가 된 Stanley의 눈이 가려지고, 앞을 못 보는 그의 발길에 장난감 북이 찢어진다. 광란 속에 이성을 잃은 Stanley는 Meg의 목을 조르려 다가가고 이때 방의 불이 나간다. McCann이 횃불을 찾아 다시 방을 비추었을 때 이들은 Lulu를 강간하고 있는 Stanley를 발견한다

ACT 3. next morning

Meg는 지난밤 파티에 관해 기억을 잘 못 한다. Petey가 Stanley의 상태에 대해 묻자 Goldberg는 그가 정신질환이 있다고 하면서 정신병원인 Monty에 데려가려 한다고 답한다. McCann이 깨끗하게 면도하고 말쑥하게 차려 입은 Stanley를 데리고 내려와 Monty로 갈 것이라 말한다. 식물인간처럼 멍한 상태의 Stanley에게 Petey는 두 사내를 따라가서는 안 된다고 애써 만류하지만, McCann과Goldberg의 협박에 포기하고 만다. Meg가 돌아와 Stanley가 아직도 자고 있는 중이며, 또한 지난밤 자신이 파티의 주인공이었다는 말을 한다.
