It really is great to be working with so many fantastic people who are solely dedicated to improving your health and wellbeing in Brighton & Hove, and I feel that this Spring time issue of Brighton Active really does offer anything and everything for all ages and abilities.

It's also great to see an ever increasing number of visitors to our website at www.brightonactive.com. Since having a complete makeover at the start of the year to make things easier for visitors to navigate around, we've consistently been keeping things updated with regular news, interviews, special offers, videos, galleries and reviews. It's an entire health and fitness resource in one place and promises to have insightful and exciting new stories each and every week!

E D I T O R ’ S N O T EE D I T O R ’ S N O T EWe're hoping that this Spring will be one to remember. Surely with our run of luck weather wise for the last couple of years we are due a break now?! Regardless of what the weather has in store, let's make sure we kick things off in style with the FREE activity day at Lagoon Watersports in Hove on Saturday 30th March from 9am-1pm. We'll be there, as will plenty of people featured in this very issue. Don't worry though if you can't make it, there's always April's Warrior Run obstacle event, May's Brighton Big Balls beach run and June's TAKEPART Festival of Sport. Plenty to keep you occupied wind, rain or shine (preferably the latter).

Healthy Regards,

Ash

It’s a great time to start CrossFitting in Brighton & Hove! The popularity of CrossFit is increasing nicely in our city through word of mouth with more and more people reaping the benefits of great coaching and a vibrant community at CrossFit Connect. Regular gyms become a thing of the past for our members as they experience the fun and camaraderie of group workouts

with like-minded people. Yes it may be tough, but boy do you see the results!

We have recently made it even easier to get involved and see why CrossFit is growing at such a fantastic rate with the start of our Trial Month memberships and Beginners classes. Each Saturday at 11am and Monday at 7pm you

can learn the basic foundational movements with one to one coaching, and get a few Workout Of the Days (or WODs) under your belt. You can also drop into a few of the main classes if you are ready and even try out a speciality class. You have the whole month to really see if CrossFit ticks the boxes.

As a result of this growth we have been steadily building our coaching

staff and amount of timetabled classes to accommodate as many enthusiastic CrossFitters as possible. We now have seven coaches working at the box, each with their own style and specialities and we offer eight different types of class on the timetable too; WOD (Workout of the Day) classes, Open Gyms, Mobility classes, Kids classes, CrossFit Endurance, Barbell Club and Olympic Lifting classes. This wide choice of classes now opens up the box for every goal you may have whether it be running a

We also host speciality workshops once a month for members and non-members alike to introduce the skills and movements that require the greatest degree of practice. Our Olympic Lifting workshops run by World and British masters lifting champ Holly Gehlcken have proven very popular as we spend four hours breaking down, videoing and analysing the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch. British Weightlifting (BWL) have been loving the increased interest in weightlifting over the last 12 months or so due in no small part to the emphasis that CrossFit puts on these movements. We also run a Gymnastic workshop that focusses on the basic-to-advanced progressions of bodyweight movements such as the Planche, Front Lever, Handstands and the enigmatic Muscle Up. If you would like to book onto any of these workshops then get in touch for more details or see our blog posts at www.crossfitconnect.blogspot.uk

Our CrossFit Kids classes are also proving popular with a whole range of ages coming to the box and getting involved with

fun movements and games. The kids learn the CrossFit standard of constantly varied, functional movement but with a specialist eye on childrens mechanics and learning patterns. They learn to become co-ordinated with basic full body movements whilst the older teens start using training bars to emulate the foundational, multi joint lifts such as the squat and deadlift. Our kids classes incorporate ages 7-15 at present and run on a Wednesday afternoon.

More detailed information on all of the above can be found on our website, or give us a call to get yourself booked onto your FREE taster class.

With spring in the air and the winter finally looking as though it’s behind us we’ll be sliding up the box doors once again and making the most of our waterside location. Tyre flipping, sledge pulling and lifting weights outside in the sunshine is

an awesome experience and one which not too many places say they can offer. Come and join in the fun at Reebok CrossFit Connect and get seriously fit!

16 ISSUE #12 MAR / APR 2013

There have been a lot of people taking part in this program and it has been great for us as we have had such an array of clients. With different ages and genders, with varied levels of fitness and lifestyles. So the results should have been a little more varied than they actually are, which proved to me that the program did and still does work on an individual basis.

I really want to tell you about two ladies in specific, whom are at opposite ends of the lifestyle spectrum: Jimi who cycles the 11 miles between work and home every day and Elizabeth who drives to work and is faced with a typical sedentary desk based workplace. Both ladies had the same goal in essence, but had different barriers standing in their way. The following results are to this point with both Jimi and Elizabeth still having 4 / 8 weeks left to go, before a maintenance program will be put into place.

After completing stage one of their programs Jimi has lost 6kg (1st) and

SPRING INTO SUMMER WITH MP PT

19.5cm around her waist! Elizabeth has lost an equally impressive 1.2kg but 20.5cm around her waist! That is in just 4 weeks!!

Both ladies have so far had one hour of personal training per week. Jimi has one session, where as Elizabeth has two half hour sessions to fit into her schedule better. This twinned with our nutritional program for which they have incorporated into their lifestyle and they are seeing the results they have wanted to see for ages. With more yet to be seen, this will also come in the way of health improvements and not just weight and inch loss.

Overall 172lb (12.3st) has been lost by people on our nutritional program since November. We even have people using our program who live abroad and have never had a Personal Training session in their lives! As I have said already, our program isn’t a diet based on everyone. It is a nutritional lifestyle program, designed to be as unique as you are.

This month I thought I would share with you some of the achievements my clients have made since January when I launched my ‘New Year, New You’ program, combining a specific mixture of exercises with a nutritional plan as unique as the individual WORDS - Martin Petrie of MP PT

For more details on our Unique Nutritional Program visit www.martinpetriepersonaltraining.co.uk/nutrition.htmlThere are many other big achievements to shout about, with clients regularly smashing their Personal Bests. For more news on these make sure you LIKE our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MPPersonalTraining

For more information on the above call 07717 455 144, email [email protected] or visit www.martinpetriepersonaltraining.co.uk

Team MPPT will be running our successful Race for Life training group once again suitable for beginners and intermediate fitness levels. With the 5k being the target, the cost for each group session is still just £5 per head with 50% going to Cancer Research UK.Start times and dates will be confirmed soon on our Facebook page.

18 ISSUE #12 MAR / APR 2013

Overtraining for most people just isn’t a problem; they struggle just to maintain regular sessions around their busy lives. But there are some people who get a little addicted to their training, completing multiple sessions per day and often with inadequate recovery. Some people can handle multiple sessions per day on a daily basis, usually sponsored athletes whose job it is to train and compete - but they are able to rest and recover between sessions, whereas most people have

TRAIN SMARTER, NOT HARDER WITH THEMETABOLIC SOLUTIONAs a Personal Trainer, I have a constant battle to get my clients to train regularly and make exercise a part of their lifestyle and not just an afterthought. But I also battle with some clients who want to train too frequently WORDS - Paul Golding of the Metabolic Solution

to work, do school runs and look after a family, etc.

Most of my clients want to get into better shape, lose a few pounds and have a healthier life. When some people see great results from their training, they become inspired and begin to feel that more would be even better. But this mindset misses the fundamental point of what exercise is - a form of stress that the body adapts to, to become stronger and fitter. The body adapts

to this stress during rest and recovery, where it undertakes a re-building process to make itself stronger so that it can handle the stress better next time. If you reduce the amount of rest and recovery, the body cannot make itself stronger. If you engage in another stressful training session before you have adequate recovery, you eventually open yourself up to overtraining.

Overtraining has many side effects such as persistent muscle soreness and / or fatigue, weakened immune system, increased susceptibility to injuries, irritability, depression, insomnia, loss of appetite and / or motivation.

At Metabolic Solution, I have designed our training sessions to give maximum bang for your buck! We follow the principle of “Less is More”, less time training = more results!!

Over the years I have participated in a number of sports including Boxing, Triathlons, Marathons, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that when I did less training, I was actually better at the sport than when I tried to do more.

So to be successful with your training take the “Less is More” approach to fitness to achieve the fit and healthy body you deserve.

A team of thirteen Army Cadet Adult Volunteers from across the South East of England will be taking part in this year’s Brighton Marathon to raise money for the education charity CVQO. This is the CVQO’s first major sports sponsorship fundraising initiative

ARMY CADET FORCE ADULT VOLUNTEERS RUN THE BRIGHTON MARATHON FOR EDUCATION CHARITY

22 ISSUE #12 MAR / APR 2013

CVQO provides opportunities for thousands of young people and volunteering adults from the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps to improve their prospects in education and work through vocational qualifications. Set up in 2001, the charity now extends this MOD uniformed Cadet Movement

offering to other youth organisations including the St John Ambulance, the Prince’s Trust, Police Cadets, Fire Service and other such organisations outside the UK.

The running team consists of the Cadet Executive Officer for Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Major Tom Meggison; Fred Hughes,

Communications Officer for the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association plus eleven Army Cadet Force Adult Volunteers from Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.

‘Team CVQO’ have been training in earnest for the Marathon for the past six months and met for the first time in December last year. Many are amateur long-distance runners and have given up their spare time to raise valuable funds which will go towards offering more educational opportunities to young people by providing them with CVQO qualifications.

Donations can be made at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/cvqo

INSPIRE TO ACHIEVE

If you like the idea of inspiring and leading young people to achieve things they never thought possible or looking for something exciting to do in your spare time, then why not consider volunteering as an Army Cadet Force Adult Instructor?

With some 46,000 Army Cadets aged between 12-18 years old across the UK, the ACF is one of the country’s largest voluntary youth organisations. Nationally, there are around 8,500 enthusiastic and committed adult volunteers but the organisation is always on the hunt for more.

For many adults, volunteering with the ACF can be an excellent way of gaining new skills or qualifications and developing their talents and knowledge, all of which can be of real value in today’s workplace. Many agree that volunteering is about ‘giving something back’, making new friends as well as getting to know their local community. Others enjoy feeling like a valued member of a team, finding a worthwhile hobby which gives them quality time away from work or a busy lifestyle whilst knowing they are making a difference to the lives of young people.

But as any Adult Instructor will tell you, it is watching the Cadets grow and develop into responsible young adults, and knowing that they have helped them along the way, which is the most rewarding part of being in the ACF.

No military experience is required and the ACF provides all the necessary training.

So, if you can give up one or two evenings a week and want to do

something productive and exciting with your free time, this could be exactly what you are looking for.

Why not give it a try? What are you waiting for?!

THE BEST EXERCISES YOU'RE NOT DOING

Try incorporating these exercises into your next workout to take your training to the next level

OVERHEAD SQUATS“The ultimate core exercise and an essential movement when learning Olympic lifting! This highly functional movement works of developing strength from the core to extremity as well as speed, power and functional flexibility. The overhead squat is unsurpassed in developing midline stability, control and balance, but don’t be tempted to add too much weight too quickly! Learn and master the movement first

with a plastic pipe or broom stick. Adding weight too quickly is a recipe for disaster!”Holly Gehlcken - Olympic lifting champion & Coach at Reebok CrossFit Connect www.crossfitconnect.co.uk

PRESS UPS“So often overlooked! I love how they work all the muscles in the upper body and build optimal strength in the forearms, wrists, upper arms, shoulders and chest. Press ups done with proper form will also help build a strong core (never miss an opportunity to improve the middle bit!). With no equipment required they can be done anywhere and can be a brilliant tool to self assess your progress in upper body

strength. The more you can do the stronger your becoming, simples! I do a quick set of 20 every weekday morning and have done for years.Chris Manning - Local Personal Trainer & author of 'Take Control - Eat Clean' www.chrismanningmethod.com

THE LEG CRANK“An amazing lower body workout that builds muscular endurance throughout your hamstrings, glutes, quads and calves. At a nice fast pace perform 24 squats followed by 24 step forward lunges (12 each leg), 24 half depth jumping lunges (12 each leg) and finish with 12 jump squats (landing with soft feet). Once complete shake it out and repeat for 3 sets. This conditioning routine was designed to help people improve

their level changes in mixed martial arts, as well as increasing their leg strength. You can perform the Leg Crank anywhere and do not need any equipment. Just make sure your core stays tight and that you get as much depth on the squats as you can without your back rolling forward!”Sol Gilbert - Former professional mixed martial artist & owner of ZT Gym & Fight Skoolwww.ztfamilyfitness.com

MAX RICHARDSON

What do you enjoy most about your sport?I love the fast pace of the game - it’s demanding and very quick. Basketball is a complex game and there are many rules to play by. The whole experience on court is fast, you have to fire on all cylinders both mentally and physically.

Remember the name Max Richardson, as he may well be the next Michael Jordan. Max, a basketball player from Brighton, is only 17 years old and is already scooping up national titles

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date?Being chosen to play for the U17 England team last year was my greatest achievement so far. We went to Cherbourg and played a range of international teams. I was the youngest in our team and learned so much from the experience.

What does a typical training week consist of?On Monday and Tuesday I train at the Freedom Leisure’s Withdean Sports Complex focusing on cardio, bodyweight exercises and free weight training. I do basketball training from 7.45-9.00pm on a Tuesday, have a college game or training session on Wednesday, and division one men’s training on Wednesday too. On Thursday I head to the King Alfred Leisure Centre gym and do plyometric exercises to give me explosive power. On Friday I have club training followed by Division 1 men’s training, so

Freedom Leisure Talented Athlete

that’s a tough way to end the week. Saturday and / or Sunday I’ll have a game or two - sometimes three!

Is there another athlete that you look up to? Why?I really like Michael Phelps’ attitude and work ethic. He really put in the hours to train to be the best in the world.

What are your hopes / aims for 2013?I’m hoping to be selected for the England U18s and am hoping for a place at Loughborough University for basketball.

Max has a place on the Freedom Leisure Talented Athlete Scheme, an annual scheme supporting emerging talent in the South East. Applications for 2013/14 open on 11th March. For more details and to apply visit www.freedomleisure.co.uk

34 ISSUE #12 MAR / APR 2013

As an international ultra marathon runner, deep tissue massages have become an integral part of my training. I would not hesitate to recommend BIM to any runner. Using BIM has made a real difference to my performance. BIM's knowledge of a runner's biomechanics is second to none. I feel it has made the difference between a finish and a DNF or in fact contributed towards a podium place. Visiting BIM for a deep tissue massage before a major international ultra event gives me the confidence I need to know my body will perform effectively on the day. BIM provides a proper deep tissue massage service for core areas of a runner's biomechanics.

BALANCE IN MOTION

The Brighton Marathon is a great event for first time as well as experienced athletes. It is a physically challenging event, which can take a toll on the body's muscles and joints. When muscles get fatigued and tight, they lose their elastibility and contractibility, resulting in decreased performance. These tight tissues can lead to changes in the bio-mechanics of the body, which when left untreated can result in injuries. At Balance In Motion our aim is to help athletes recover from injuries, and enabling them to remain injury free throughout training and competition. Ensuring that patient's receive the best quality of treatment means searching out the causes of the problems, and treating the root of these causes rather than the symptoms alone.

BIM Offers:

• Biomechanical Assessments

• Fat and Bioimpedance Analysis

• Deep Sports Massage

• Therapeutic Massage

• Acupuncture

• Personal Training
