A Wild Goose and Goat

As Idrove down the dusty gravel road through the "rain foresf (there Is acontradiction), I noticed that the trees were taller and the forestthicker. We had not come this way before. Surely not. But itwas true asI realized I missed my junction In order to get back on the paved road andon toward Cape Coast and on to home.

It seems I had been sent on some sort of mission to find out whether somegroups were Interested In the Christian Church. Now get this. We,Richard Ntim (College student body president) and Idid not knowthe nameof the group we were seeking, the actually town or village, and the contactperson. After having search half a Sunday morning, Feb. 28, for the rightgroup we were nigh on to giving up when a group of young lads led us to aman who had supposedly be waiting for us at the police station. We hadgone to the wrong town and waited at the wrong police station first but nowwe thought we had the right one.

The man we finally met, John, led us onward through the Jungle to a smallvillage at the end of the road. There we met with about 15 people whopromised us the rightdoctrine Inexchange for a hopeful load of roofingsheete. Ntim and I rejoiced that we had completed our mission after sixhours of driving from Accra to this tiny little place nestled In thejungle. We were given lavish gifts of plantain and a real live goat whichbleated off and on as we traveled home, because It had been bound up front

Page 3: Bright Tim Twyla 1998 Ghana

and back legs tied together.

This had surely been a day. Old blue provided transportation for not onlyNtim and myself but several ministers, elders, a woman or two and a Muslimcomplete with toga. When Istopped for gas on the way back out of thejungle to Cape Coast, a man asked ifthis certain woman and child couldride. Why not. The trip was uneventful.

Ntim and I did make it back to Accra, with ripe plantain and goat. I amenjoying the plantain as is Richard I'm sure. I gave the goat to Mr. Ntimsince the last animal we had here, a cat, disappeared on a Sunday morningthrough the kitchen window having nearly lifted the outside screen. No,someone enjoyed that cat for Sunday dinner, and Idid not think that toobecoming to the goat yet. It is too young. Richard Ntim will raise.I think our area is anti-goat or anti-house pet in or out.

The rest of the story. Mr. Adjei, our beloved leader of the ChristianChurches, informed me that Richard and I had met the wrong people afterall. Right town, wrong man and church.

Moral of the story: You can be led on a vynid goose chase for 14 hours andstill come home with a goat, (my first)* Two groups actually contacted the Christian Church people in Accra, so wewere only half-wrong. Pray that these groups see and learn to love JesusChrist and desire fello\wshipwith others of the same more than anythingincluding roofing sheets.

We that we just say thank you to all of you and God bless. Love, Tim andTwyla

THE BRIGHT FAMILYTim and Twyla are on break now. Twyla goes back to her job at GIS on

April 13 while classes resume at Ghana Christian College on April 27.Healthwise everyone is doing fine so far.The Kidsin the U.S.: They are all extremely busy as they proceed down

the home stretch of this semester and continue at various jobs. At lastreport all were well and doing fine. Please continue to pray for them - toput forth their best in school, and on the job; to not feel so lonelyseparated from their parents and sometimes from each other; and to gainmore and more confidence in who they are and what they can do for the Lord.

ENERGY CRISIS

The energy situation is as of March 31: Electric power is available to us60 hours a week, 12 hours on and 24 hours off. No one knows quite for surehow long this crisiswill occur. Please pray for rainso that the AkosomboLake can be restored. It is about 15 feet under normal level right now.

The Generator: Itsure is a big plus right now. Just last night as ourpower was offfor 24 hours, the generator provided power to cool thingsdown so we could sleep, and helped with the fridge and fans this morning sothat some work could be done on the computer. Your providential gifts madeit possible. When Icontacted Lois, she told us there was just enoughafter the bills were paid. We thank God for all of you.

ON THE ROAD WITH TIMPrasso - The first of the month Tim and Richard Ntim, a student of the

College, traveled to the forested area. Afterabout 3 hours of searching,we were able to find a small village and some representatives who wereinterested in having fellowship with the Christian Church. And that wasnot even the church we were supposed to be at. So, instead of one or twogroups, there are about four who are interested. Please pray that theseseeking (Berean type churches) desiring to knowthe truth, will find itthrough biblical directives. As a result of the day Iwas the proud ownerof a baby goat!

Swedru - Tim preached at a newly organized Christian Church in thisdistrictcapital town. John AdjeiMensah, a GCC graduate whom Tim hasworked with many times before, is the leader of this new group. Itwasvery encouraging to see these people ingood number, about 60 in all, as wemet on the verandah of the town council building. The church's need now isabout $25 so that they can continue to rent this porch as their meetingplace for another year.

COMING UP

Easter National Convention - Tim will travel with some of the othermissionaries to a place called Yegi located inland some 200 miles on one ofthe fingers of the Volta Lake (Largest man-made lake in the world). Itis

Page 6: Bright Tim Twyla 1998 Ghana

a 12 hours trip, and final portion takes about 4 hours over that 40 milestretch. Tim will lead the offertoryduring the Saturday evening mainsession. The Yegi area is home to several new and lesser reached groups ofpeople for Christ. There are about 5 or so churches in the area with about200 members. This is the first time the National Convention has been heldthis far inland.

West Africa Missionary Conference - Missionaries from various countriessuch as Mali, Ivory Coast and Ghana, will join together April 22-26 forgreat.15 fellowship, planning, and just relaxing time. The Conference willbe

held in Ivory Coast this year. Twyla is Conference Co-ordinator and Tim isthe MC-Moderator. Please pray for a safe journey as we travel by van likewe did two years ago. Most of the mission team from Accra will traveltogether.

CRUSADE IN REFUGEE CAMP

During May Tim took a group of Liberian students of Ghana ChristianCollege on a five hour trek along the coatal shore of southern Ghana tothe United National Refugee Camp in the western area of Ghana. The grouparrived extremely tired out from the trip at 8:00 P.M. Part of the teamhad gone on ahead to make last minute arrangements in the camp. The leaderinformed Tim that he was to preach. So the service started at 8:30 PM andclosed around 9:45. Eight people responded that evening. Saturday, thenext day, the Liberian team went calling on the community in the morning. That afternoon a leadership seminar was held and two of the team members,

young women, presented some of the best material I have heard by any of ourstudents. That evening we enjoyed the "Jesus" film on the life andministry of Christ. It was the first time in some fifty crusades that Timever heard it in English. Three more people accepted Christ. Sundaymorning the team split up and went to various churches in the camp. Timpreached at an interdenominational church.

A great blessing was shared as Tim ate with the team members, enjoyed hottea and bread, and conversed on many subjects. The drive along the coastprovided some of the most beautiful scenery in Ghana. The campitself is made up of people from The Sudan, Togo, Sierra Leone and Liberia,or any one needing refuge. There were five main churches including aMethodist, Presbyterian, local independent, interdenominational andBaptist. The leaders cooperated very well on the project. In the end 36 peopleaccepted Christ, several were baptized and more were being taught. Indeed, many souls found refuge in the Lord!

TIM'S ILLNESS

As many of you have heard by now Tim came down with typhoid fever, malariaand food poisoning all at the same time. He was hopitalized on June 4 andremained there for six days. The evening of June 4 his fever was so highthat

the nurses and Twyla kept washing him down with cool water. The bloodpressure was so low there was hardly a heartbeat. Tim came home, rested aweek

and went back to classes and taught each one. With each week his strengthhas gradually returned. The medical people say it will be four to sixweeks before he will feel very strong again and possibly another couple ofmonths before he returns to normal.

"Thank you for all of your prayers during my time of illness. Pleasecontinue to pray for me in the coming weeks as Ifinish the third term ofclasses, finals and graduation. Your prayers have meant so much. AlthoughI was amost gone from this world, I guess the Lord still has work for medo here yet. Your prayers and words of encouragement havemeant so much to me."

TWYLA'S RETURN

Twyla traveled to the U.S. during April and May to be with the family andtake

care of some matters. The children had several needs, and it was God'stiming that she was able to travel then. Itwas also done at the directionof our elders at the Palestine Church of Christ. Her presence was neededvery much. We praise God who knows best in all things and the wise counselthat we were given. Itwas great to have her back here, and timely sincethat is when Tim became very ill.

GHANA CHRITIAN COLLEGEThird Term: The first item is that the College has had another successful

term with around 100 students returning. Graduation is July 18, and therewill be around forty graduates this year. Tim has taught Minor Prophets,

Wisdom Literature III,and Pastoral Counseling,Relocation Project: The College has come very close to

finalizing the land registration and obtaining the building permit. Thebuilding permit people are waiting to receive some more structural drawingsof the campus before they can move ahead with granting the permit. Twowells have been dug by the Non-instrument Church of Christ mission. Theybrought in new equipment and tested it out on our property. The costoriginally was to be approximately$4000 per well.

Patrick Cline, a missionary who was in Ghana for a few years in theinterior, has decided to join with the College and help with reolocationproject. He hold a business and architecture degree from East CarolinaUniversity. Hewill be a tremendous help to the College relocation project as a wholesince he understands architecture skills, plans, drawings, and financialmanagement. He, his wife Heather, and their two children plan to move toAccra in the middle of August. Please pray for them.

ELECTRICITY ON THE NEW CAMPUS - The Central Committee just released fundsfor poles, wires, hook up and a 200 KVA transformer to be installed in thenew campus. Cost $23,000. If you care to donate, mark your gift forthat project or let Lois Nichols know.

ENERGY CRUNCH

Many of your may still be wondering how the electricity situation isgoing. The power outages are still with us. We are still on 12 hours andoff 12 hours, and then we switch from days and nights every three days.Rains have come in the interior. The latest report by the Collegepresident today in chapel seemed to indicate the lake may be down so lowthat the Akosombo Dam is near to closing down. Ifthat happens most ofAccra (4.8 million people) will be without power. We are prayingfor largeamounts of rain in the Volta region. Pray specifically, that this trendmay be reversed. We are in the rainy season now, and ifthe rains are notsufficient the crisis will continue.

Again, Twyla and Iwant to thank you all for your prayers, generous gifts, and many encouragements. Make God bless you all as we work for the Jesusand His Kingdom. Love, Tim and Twyla

is Dr. Cara Snyder. She will be in Ghana for one year.STUDENTS - Forty-seven graduated in the 1998 class. There were over 1500people in attendance at the graduation. New Students - Thirtyhave beenaccepted so far with late entry exams still to come. Our August Sessionshad 67 students. So the projection is around 175 students for 1998-99.

ELECTRICFTY- Would you believe that normal twenty-fourhours of power hasreturn to Accra, at least during the July-August months. There has onlybeen a few hours off the entire time. WATER LEVEL - The water level at

Akosombo Dam is higher now due to rains in the hill and forest regions. Itis a long ways from full but we are grateful for the rain the Lord hassent. Accra is actually very dry but the rain that counts falls in the midand northern regions of the country.

TRUCK - "Old Blue"was not in good shape when we arrived in Ghana. Lastweek, our first week back with both of us working long hours, we had todrive it. Twyla drove the first three days and went three for three -three minor accidents in three days. The truck would stall in the middleof traffic and intersections. She was hit, yelled at and basicallyhumiliated and abused. The truck would die when you took the foot off theaccelerator. Ihad better luck but it was a challenge. Isoon found that"thirdfoot." It was the hand brake. Iwould put it on at a stop light, then release it when the lightturned green. What a life! Today the truckwas repaired and runs good so far. We are thankful indeed a matter ofanswered prayer.NEW TRUCK NEEDED - We have a little over $9000 in the fund. The totalprice of a new Isuzu crew cab, diesel engine, four wheel drive truck is$21,000. We need $13,000 more. Please pray for this project.SERIOUS PRAYERS - Pray for the safety of all Americans around the worldbut especially those in Ghana. There have been reports of bomb threats atAmerican installations over the past few weeks. We pray that God willprotect His workers and all concemed, both Americans and Ghanaians.

Financial Report - Sept. 1,1998Balances on hand in various Funds

Spendable General Fund -$3,338.18NewTruck - $9,170.39 (Cost of a new truck is $21,000)Rent - $5,000 ($6,000 needed to pay Dec. 1 rent for one year)College SalaryA/ehicle - $3,000 (Our monthlybudget is about $500)Evangelists - $500 ($150 is paid out each month for national evangelists).New Campus - No designated funds for July - Aug. We are happy to report that for the most part electricity has been verystable over the past few months. Since we arrived back in Ghana Aug. 21,we have only had to use the generator twice. The rains are coming now inthe northern part of Ghana and the Volta Lake is now beginning to fill backup. Ghana has also been able to secure power from neighboring countries, and two barges with generators for the country have been brought in. Weare grateful to the Lord for all of this.

way to the spreading evening darkness, and the sprinkle of lights flickeredin the shanty kiosks.

We arrived in time to get everything set up before dark at 6:30 PM. Thefilm was ready. Children began to stream into the site. Adults closedtheir shops. The location was a clearing in the midst of a roadway withsmall kioks on all sides and a road continuing on one side. Peoplehovered closely to one another as the Life of Jesus was portrayed on thscreen.

The movie progressed as a gentle breeze blew the clouds back into thehills. The evening star appeared and soon a velvet star lit nightappeared. In that humble place much like the place in which the Savior wasbom, hundreds viewed the story of the birth and ministry of Jesus.Fourteen responded to the invitation. We pray God's blessing on the GraceChristian Church of Ashaiman.

We, the technician and I, arrived at our homes around Midnight.

NINE DAYS IN NORTHERN GHANA - A GREAT TRIPDear Friends,

Iwant to give a short update on my recent trip to northern Ghana, Dec.3-11. Having packed our new 4-wheel drive Isuzu pickup truck and picked upthree students and one alumnus of Ghana Christian College we started our 12hours trek to Northem Region, Ghana. The sluggish pace finally brought usto our destination base in a town called Salaga at 12:30 AM Friday, Dec. 4.The purpose for this trip was to bring the "Jesus" film via 16 mmprojector to five villages and one town. The film is an evangelistic toolfor planting the seeds of faith in areas where there are a minority ofChristians. The film was shown as well as preaching accomplished in fivevillages and one town.

From Salaga we traveled to one village each evening. The film andpreaching attracted crowds rangingfrom 400-600 each evening. On Sundaymoming, Dec. 6, there six baptisms from the Saturday night meeting in avillage called Ocherepey. There are six Christian Churches in the area andmost are comprised of people from the Konkomba ethnic group. Tbis group ofpeople was at war with several other tribes just a few years ago. Thepeace of Jesus Christhas begun to break down several walls of division, strife and conflict.

Ourfinal two nights Fred Samm, an alumnus, Paul Akuteye, a student, andItraveled north into the "10/40 window to a town called Walle Walle. Herewe worked withWilliam Darko, another graduate of Ghana Christian College. For two evenings we held our meetings in the market - transport centerof the town. Eleven hundred people were exposed to the "life of Christ"via the "Jesus" film. Elven people came aftenA^ards for discussions withbrothers Darko and Augustine (FAME evangelist who was helping us).

We thank all who prayed fora verysafe and successful trip. We thankFrancis Addae, a FAME evangelist and GCC graduate who hosted us inSalaga. We thank our Lord Jesus Christ who made it possible and to all who havecontributed to our truck fund and our work in Ghana. We are thankful forequipment. It was very functional. Thetrip coveredover1300 miles, someof itonsuper highways, and some on horrible bushroads. Over 4000 peoplewitnessed the film.

We express our most sincere thans and gratitude forthe many ofyou whoprovided the means for the new truck. It took us to the "north" and backwithout any problems. We also thank you all foryour regular supportwhichprovided the funds to be able to make the trip possible. Anupdate ofthefollow-up work done bythe evangelistswill be available inJanuary. Keeppraying for the expanding work ofthe Christian churches/churches ofChristin Ghana.
