In 2015-2016, BWH was named the 6 th best hospital in the United States by US News & World Report’s Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals. The Department of Pharmacy provides services to inpatient, outpatient, and satellite clinic locations throughout the Metro Boston area. Prerequisites and Licensure

o Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited

school or college of pharmacy

o Completion of a PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency

o Massachusetts pharmacist licensure required within

90 days of starting the program

o US citizenship or permanent resident visa

Meetings

o Funding is generally provided for the resident to

attend one to two professional meetings. Examples

include ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Society of

Critical Care Medicine Annual Congress, American

Thoracic Society International Conference, and New

England Critical Care Symposium

Staffing Requirements

o Residents are scheduled to staff every other to every

third weekend and approximately one evening shift

every other week

o Residents are scheduled to staff holidays on a

rotating basis

o Additional staffing responsibilities are subject to

departmental needs and may include participation in

clinical programs

Expectations

Expectations of the Resident

The resident is expected to plan, design, and submit two

manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, including one original

research publication and one therapeutic review, clinical

consult, clinical update, or the like.

The resident is expected to plan, design, and complete at least

one major research project with guidance from preceptors and

submit an abstract to a professional organization meeting.

The resident is expected to complete at least one secondary

research, local guideline or policy, and drug information

project according to departmental needs.

The resident is expected to participate in rotational projects

according to preceptor assignments.

The resident is expected to submit a clinical pearl for

consideration at the Council of Boston Teaching Hospitals

Pharmacy Grand Rounds and the New England Critical Care

Symposium.

The resident is expected to author at least one Drug Administration Guideline.

The resident is expected to contribute to departmental staff education through a CEU presentation

to the Department of Pharmacy staff, 10-12 daily clinical meeting presentations, two case conference

presentations, and participation in the departmental journal surveillance program.

The resident is expected to contribute to multidisciplinary staff education through critical care topic

education to fellows, residents, interns, and nurses on pain, agitation, and delirium management,

glucose control, and therapeutic hypothermia.

The resident is expected to participate in internal journal clubs within the department and in

MICU/SICU Noon Conference and external journal clubs through SCCM’s Clinical Pharmacy and

Pharmacology Section upon invitation.

The resident is expected to actively participate on at least one institutional multidisciplinary

committee.

The resident is expected to precept and teach pharmacy students and PGY-1 residents.

The resident is expected to participate in the recruitment of succeeding PGY-2 critical care residents.
