Brian’s Take “Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” is comment by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is striking controversy throughout the world. Morey made a monumental mistake commenting on Hong Kong’s proposition to extradite criminals back into China. Commenting like this is unaccept- able. Morey and the rest of the National Basketball Association (NBA) executives need to strictly promote the NBA and stay out of foreign affairs. Morey is not in a position to make comments like this toward the Chinese governement. He is an NBA executive, not a politician. Morey is not wrong for saying what he said as the Constitution grants him the right to speak freely, but he is wrong for commenting on the situation while he represents the NBA in a platform where he is expected to promote the NBA. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has done an outstanding job diversifying the league and expanding into other countries such as India, Africa, and China. Morey has put such a strain on a relationship that Silver worked so hard to obtain. Morey is the CEO of the team that harbored Yao Ming, the best Chinese basketball player in NBA history (fade- awayworld.com). e fact that Morey would have the inclination to make a comment bashing China’s judicial system shows that he is taking the relationship with China for granted. Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal says that Morey is right by commenting. O’Neal is out of his mind. O’Neal should be saying that Morey needs to retract his comment and apologize to the Chinese government and make sure that any busi- ness is strictly to promote the NBA. Morey should not have made this comment about Hong Kong. He needs to promote the NBA to other parts of the world, not political views.
