Think?The Polio Eradication Story

Renouf credits Sever, a member of the Rotary Club of Potomac, Md., for convincing Rotary’s leaders that the organization could tackle the disease. “Most would have dismissed it as an impossible dream, beyond our capacity financially or organizationally, as did many former leaders,” Renouf says. “But here was a Rotarian uniquely qualified – a senior scientist with an appreciation of Rotary’s potential, who by virtue of his reputation personally and professionally was able to persuade the 1979-80 Board to adopt the goal of a polio-free world as the major emphasis of the 3-H program.”

Extracted from “The Rotarian” magazineJanuary 2014 Issue

Note: Renouf was the RI President for RY 1978-79

President or Club?• Think of the efforts we put in now after 36 years to

support the Polio Eradication programme. • PP Robin Tay walked the length and breadth of

Malaysia from Alor Star to KL and later KL to Singapore; and later Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. (I joined in and walked 40 km from Rawang to KL.)

• All for raising awareness and funds to support TRF Polio programme.

• All because of Mr Sever’s conviction that polio can be eradicated.

Page 21: Briefing on our 1Club Project Day Care Centre for the Aged (DCCA) Sunday 17 May 2015 @RLC to the PP Council and to the Incoming Board on Thursday 21 May.

President or Club?• Think of Past Rtn (PP) Kong Tai Sung who initiated

the Jenjarom Old Folk’s Home project in RY 1988-89.• And PP PY Choong chaired the Project and PP Quah

the architect. • We are still committed to it after 26 years. • RC Pudu’s name is recognised in the local

community for this.

Page 22: Briefing on our 1Club Project Day Care Centre for the Aged (DCCA) Sunday 17 May 2015 @RLC to the PP Council and to the Incoming Board on Thursday 21 May.

President or Club?• Likewise our Charter President, Douglas Fraser

initiated the Scholarship scheme. • PP Alex Lee got the Pudu Charity Foundation

capitalised in 1972. • And we are still raising funds regularly to support

this scheme to this day. • That’s coming to 43 years now.

Page 23: Briefing on our 1Club Project Day Care Centre for the Aged (DCCA) Sunday 17 May 2015 @RLC to the PP Council and to the Incoming Board on Thursday 21 May.

President or Club?• Yes, I am committing future presidents to this

project; to improve it and to enhance it. • This is a noble project; by the Club and not by the

President. • Hence I call it, the 1Club project. • Just as Polio Eradication is a Rotary project and not

Sever’s or Renouf’s. • Likewise for Jenjarom and the Scholarship scheme.
