The BBC’s new Education Strategy to encourage social mobility in the UK

The priorities, which will now be explored in partnership with a range of other organisations, include: • Improving literacy rates by focusing on pre-school children to counter the fact that

the most disadvantaged 5-year-olds can be 19 months behind their more affluent peers in vocabulary development on school entry

• Championing the wider needs of children by building resilience and self-esteem and by supporting mental health just as much as we currently support their academic needs

• Opening up the world of employment to young people at a time when recent CBI research has revealed that 84% of UK businesses feel the quality of careers advice young people receive is not good enough

• Exploring opportunities that make it easier for adults to retrain; equipping them to thrive in a changing labour market and an increasingly digital world

include:

• Super Movers is a partnership between the BBC and the Premier League designed to help children across the UK to get physically active with curriculum linked videos.

• Super Movers aims to help primary schools and

families to build physical activity into their school day and beyond.

• The campaign works with partners such as: The Scottish Professional Football League, Sport Scotland, Sport England, Sport Wales, Public Health England, Youth Sport Trust

Health and Wellbeing

• The Mind Set is the BBC’s and the UK’s first national peer-to-peer coaching network led by a team of young people who took their GCSEs or Nationals in 2016 and 2017.

• The Mind Set is powered by BBC Bitesize and is a partnership with Childline, Young Minds and the NCS.

• Currently, the Mind Set site is gearing up for GCSE/ Nationals exams with content including Revision: tips for using past papers and advice for parents.

Health and Wellbeing

Radio 1’s Academy

Radio 1’s Academy (21 – 24th May) will host a week of inspiring free events in Swansea aimed at helping 16-19 year-olds kick-start their careers in the creative industries. Including Q&As, careers advice, live music, and immersive virtual reality experiences.

• Tomorrow’s World is a pan-BBC partnership campaign which connects audiences with the brightest minds and biggest science institutions in the country, creating a national conversation and a public celebration of all things science.

• Tomorrow’s World is in partnership with a number of organisations including:

Science Museum Group; Wellcome; The Open University and the Royal Society

Science

• BBC Terrific Scientific, a two year primary science campaign, has been developed in partnership with Wellcome; creating a significant intervention to counter the STEM crisis in the UK.

• Delivered in collaboration with over 40 external partners including universities who use the data collected by school children for real world scientific research.

2019: Music Education

• We are currently exploring the benefits of music education for early years and KS1 pupils.

• We will look for opportunities across the BBC to

amplify the benefits of music education to children, schools, teachers and parents.

Our online formal education provision for children and young people is divided across two areas:

Student facing, out of classroom study and revision support for

5-16+

Support for teachers to bring the curriculum to life for their students, to use in school and

lessons

• BBC Teach supports teachers by commissioning Class Clips and working with BBC programmes to create curriculum-related content for the classroom.

• Teach is now home to all BBC Learning’s teacher-facing content including educational campaigns like Terrific Scientific, Live Lessons and School Radio.

BBC Live Lessons

From September 2018, Live Lessons will be part of BBC Teach.

Live, interactive programmes devised to support teachers and bring curriculum content to life, directly to the classroom.

• Covering a range of subjects and school ages with access to leading experts and some of the BBC’s biggest brands and talent, Live Lessons are a shared learning experience for schools all over the UK.

Autumn term Live Lessons are due to cover:

Super Movers (KS2)

Poetry (to tie in with National Poetry Day)

Armistice, end of the great war (Primary, creative writing)

BBC Bitesize 5-16+

Curriculum-linked resources for students

BBC Bitesize supports students with their studies outside the classroom, at home and on the go.

It directly relates to the curriculum, supporting learners from reception through to taking school-leaving exams.

Students can find material to support their studies wherever they are in the UK.

• Continued infrastructure work to update the platform, including moving to the cloud, bbc.com and migrating to /bitesize.

• Under 13s sign-in to be added to the 14-16 sign-in already in place, as part of BBC’s broader personalisation initiative.

• Improvements to navigation and content discovery.

• New branding being developed.

BBC Learning introduced its external linking policy in 2013 to provide a benefit to our audience so that they can move from Bitesize, and our other digital websites where relevant, to other high quality content. It also provides a benefit for external partners through traffic and increased SEO.

• BBC Teach external providers page. This external providers page is now live and promoted on www.bbc.co.uk/teach

• External linking from the app. Work in progress to develop external links from the app.
